let me face you
Who: Dalila and Lumen
Where: Just outside school
When: Before school starts
The crowning gem of Dalila's superhero outfit for today was (1) the fact that Jaws had insisted on coming so she had him in a large water bottle tucked into her backpack again so she could be like "no see, I have a fishy companion and all" and (2) she had the ability to get fish to listen to her. Those fish were named "mom" and "Rico" respectively and okay, it was more like asking them most of the time, but the important fact was that she was related to were-sharks and they would listen to her. Sometimes. Anyhow, nothing could have possibly put her in a bad mood that day until the moment that they picked Lumen up for school and she remembered why it was that there was a funny feeling tickling around in the pit of her stomach that Jaws kept remarking on. Jaws who she was ready to brain-muzzle if he shouted at Lumen that she was dating the fanger, as he had done to her mother. The fish had a very, very loud mouth. Though he was being nice and quiet right now because she had promised him a veritable feast of bloodworms and beefheart when they got home if he just did not tell Lumen about Darklis and let her do it herself when they got to school.
Waving for Rico to go ahead once they were there - later she needed to remember to ask him what was going on with Lily since she was pretty sure she had caught the name rattling around somewhere in his head over the past day - Dalila fiddled with the strap attaching Jaws to her backpack so that he could have a clear view of their surroundings and reached out to catch Lumen's wrist. "Hey Loo, hold up, I've got something to tell you." Better to tell her now than to risk her walking in and finding out some other way. Knowing some of the kids in school meant that Dalila would not be surprised if they all knew and she would place the blame squarely on Evelyn's shoulders. And be okay with it since Darklis had said yes so it would not be humiliating. Unless they freak out and start calling me a dyke, then I'm going to freeze all of their lockers shut. She bet that she could probably get Mrs. Landers to help her out with that if she asked really nicely and put something in about bullies. None of that was really important right then though. What was important was that she go ahead and tell Lumen and put up with the reprecussions here and now. Because Evelyn was right: Lumen had a tendency to get... napalm-y when she was upset. 'She might kill you.' Look at that, Jaws did have an inside voice.
"Sooooooo, you're... well." Dalila was excellent at talking to people, but right then she was not sure of exactly what she wanted to say. Just coming out and saying it might really be the best way to go, like taking off a band-aid. "I'm going on a date with Darklis. Like a date. I asked her out yesterday and she said yes. Figured it'd be good to tell you before someone else did."
