When the bell over the door chimed, Harper had just nipped around the corner into her supply closet so that she could get some more cupcake wrappers. She was feeling in a frilly sort of mood today, probably inspired by the dress she had decided to wear, and so she was making dainty little cupcakes and needed plain white wrappers to accent them. The first batch was sitting on top of the display case, the second had just come out of the oven, and the third had another fifteen minutes left to bake. Her fingers had just clasped around the plastic bag of the wrappers when she hears someone calling out her name. 'It's a girl.' Crayola's voice was low and bitter. Really? I couldn't tell that from the way she sounded or anything. What her familiar didn't share was the fact that the 'girl' was the one and only pen pal Harper had remained in contact with. Oh he recognized the scent from the letters she received, but he decided that detail required too much effort to think. So he simply turned his thoughts toward Zoie. 'She'll be out in a minute. You can wait if you want. Don't know why you would though.'
Harper ducked out of the pantry with the wrappers in hand, but the second her eyes fell on the blonde on the other side of the counter, the plastic bag fell to the floor with a dull slapping sound. It didn't matter that it had been years since she last saw her in person; Harper had demanded through her letters to see pictures of Zoie and her precious nephew, plus there Zoie's video blog or whatever (which Harper fought with for hours until she got it to work right) so she recognized her on the spot. From the second her eyes had landed on Zoie, something began building in Harper's stomach and rushed upwards, bubbling up into her throat, only to be released as a high-pitched squeal. The sound caused Crayola's ears to lay back and his hair to stand on end. Now he regretted his decision not to tell Harper who the girl was.
"Zoie!! Holyshitisthatyou?!" She jumped over the side of he counter, not really caring if the action contradicted her ultra feminine outfit or if she showed more than she ought to have with the way her dress slid up. Once her feet hit the other side of the counter, they hopped over so that she was standing next to Zoie and she wrapped her arms around the thin girl. Normal Harper hugs were bone crushing, but considering that she remembered this was Zoie, she did her absolute best not to hurt her friend. "When did you get into town? This is the most amazing thing ever," she didn't even pause to take in a breath. "I've missed you so much!"
