It wasn’t often that Darlene got off work before four or five o’clock; all of the cooks at Ad Gustum worked in shifts – one couldn’t leave without another coming to take their place. Every so often, someone would need the extra hours and would decide to arrive early for their shift. So long as it didn’t happen all the time, Darlene didn’t mind letting them overlap their shift onto hers – especially not on days like today. Some of the workers at Ad Gustum were appreciative of the work that she and the other cooks did. They didn’t ask for much and they did, they were always patient; however, there were some that were nothing short of a nightmare. These were the workers that Darlene knew by name and, if it weren’t for the fact that she would be seriously punished for doing so, she would have gladly put something in their food to ruin their day – or week. Instead, all she could do was seethe and hope for a vision of something unfortunate coming their way. Today, a girl asked her to cook a triple-layer double cheese lasagna. Darlene tried to argue that it would be a waste to make a group meal for one person, but the other woman was insistent. She even sat there and chatted with Darlene during the entirety of its bake time, but seconds after the buzzer had gone off, she announced that she wasn’t hungry anymore. It took everything in Darlene to keep calm and not throw the entire pan at the door she left through. Detours or coffee breaks were always needed on days when she left work in such a horrible mood. She knew herself well enough to know that going home to tormented by her son would only lead to a fight, one that Ky would scarcely believe had actually happened. Her favorite spot to go and collect her thoughts was The Mudhouse. They had the best caramel macchiato she had ever tasted, and right now that was all she craved. Darlene chose a table while she waited for her coffee to be made. With a plastic fork she had gotten at the counter, she began to pick at the untouched lasagna she had taken with her when she left. It was hard to appreciate her masterpiece when it was practically freezing. Speaking of heat, at the sound of the shop bell chiming, Darlene’s eyes lit up when she caught sight of the fire elemental she had recently met. She wasn’t the type to be overly anxious or excited to see anyone, even when it came to Ky or Jin, but after a day like she had had, Darlene was happy to see the other woman. Her hand shot up and waved back and forth to get Melina’s attention. “Hey!” She waited until the elemental was within hearing distance. “Sorry I don’t have a ball to throw at your head. Are you just popping in for a quick shot of caffeine?” The thought never occurred to her that the fire elemental wouldn't recall who she was, especially not considering that she remembered Melina without a moment of hesitation. |
