Carter saw clearly enough the way the girl scooped up another ball and started tossing it up and down. He might not have gone to public school growing up but he recognised the confidence in the way she tossed and caught it, tossed and caught it, over and over again. The hit had been intentional. She had missed, obviously, though to give her credit where credit was due if she'd been dealing with a regular human she probably would have hit her mark. An impressive aim to say the least, of its own accord his mind started running about the potential she might have with real weapons. Hunters couldn't help but see things that way, considering all the angles, all the potential dangers, present and future alike.
Ten feet. Carter judged it easily and he set his feet a comfortable and ready distance apart -- ready to dodge another swing or whatever else she might throw his way -- with his eyes fixed on hers. The way she held the bat up like that reinforced the confidence he'd picked up on earlier. She might be a child, whoever she was, but she could hold her own, or at least believed she could well enough to act like it, and convincingly so. "Strange girls who hit balls at men out for a walk aren't particular cool either," he returned, lifting the ball to show it to her, keeping it that way for a few moments before tossing it back. "Good aim," he added. Credit where credit was due.
