& I've been denying this feeling of hopelessness
Who: Moira and Gabby, with Urist (NPC'd)
Where: in the woods near the river
When: afternoon, after classes
Long days had gone by since Gabby had gone swimming in the very same river she was standing nearby -- not too close, Urist wouldn't let her get that close. Was it a little morbid to re-visit the site where she had almost drowned? Probably. 'If you want my opinion, I think it is...' "Nope, didn't ask for it," Gabby drawled, rolling her eyes until she could look down at the grey fox. He'd barely left her side all this time, even taking to sleeping with her at night. It was behavior very unbefitting of a fox, if you took Gabby's opinion into consideration. 'What was that you said? 'Nope' ? Yeah, that was it. I'm your familiar, and I will not leave your side again until I'm sure that you won't do something foolish.' Gabby made a scoffing sound and focused back on the river. The water looked so harmless; was it any wonder that nobody had any idea that there were evil, man-eating creatures lurking there beneath its depths? Even though she'd only seen the one, she had that sinking feeling that there were more of them. It was a gut reaction, but she just knew that she had to do something about it. 'Do what? What can you do? The police didn't seem too keen on your story.' A sound somewhere between a growl and a groan came out of Gabby's mouth. "I had teeth marks in my leg and was half-dead when the paramedics came. What more do they need?" She knew it was futile even as she argued, but she was still pretty upset about it all.
What if they hurt more people? Never mind the fact that she found it extremely difficult just to take a shower in the morning -- baths were out of the question -- much less make it around campus on her crutches. She had the worst bruises imaginable in her armpits and her arms were constantly sore. That, and physical therapy was doing her almost no good. There was nerve damage in her leg and Gabby refused to think about what might happen once they figured out that it would never been the same. What would she do then? Dancing was her life, her dream, and like hell was she going to just give in and become some washed up choreographer who loathed all the fit young people they taught. More to the point, the light inside her was flickering and unsteady and any higher level fire elemental would be able to see it. There were certain things that Gabby needed as a person and as an elemental that she just wasn't getting. Full use of her body was one thing. Companionship was another -- it was her own fault that most people couldn't stand to be around her. She was prickly at best, and downright depressed and waspish at her worst. Pressing his cheek against the side of her leg, Urist drew her gaze back down to him. 'It'll get better, little flame. You have to trust me on this.' Gabby knew he was just trying to help but she really felt like this could very well be the end of the world. Pricking his ears up and getting to his feet, Urist's little ruff stood on end. 'There's something out there.' Turning back towards the woods and away from the river, his nostrils worked furiously and Gabby struggled to turn herself so she could watch the river and the woods. "What? What is it?" The thread of panic was there, in her voice, called up all too easily. 'I'm not sure. Keep back, and be ready to call a flame if you have to.' If one thing was certain, she still trusted Urist's instincts and nose, so she tried to steady herself for whatever was out there.
