because sometimes, life does happen over coffee
WHO: Ronnie and Savvy
WHERE: Starbucks
WHEN: Early Morning -- Around 6:30 AM
When Ronnie pulled into the Starbucks' parking lot at six twenty-eight that morning, there were two, technically three things at the forefront of her mind. The first was the Reduced-Fat Very Berry Coffee Cake she had been craving since she'd been awakened by her brother's very loud, very much unnecessary declaratory reminder that today, oh joyous day, was Pajamas Day at Scarlet Oak High School and the start of spirit week. The second was the Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin she had promised to buy and hold for him until second period since Lani, social creature that he was, had wanted to catch the bus so he could chat up his cute little freshman friends instead of catching a ride with his big sister, which she had supposed was alright. He was growing up, after all, even if it had seemed like it was happening too fast for her liking at that particular moment. The third thing on her mind was the Java Chip Frap she didn't need, but was going to buy anyway because she deserved a treat that included a considerable amount of caffeine. She needed it, really, considering that behind her immediate need for fuel for her body and brain was the unresolved matter of homecoming and her complete and utter lack of a date for it. She was still working that out and with a limited number of days to do so. Thus, her very immediate need for the jump start the caffeine in that tasty beverage would give her and a relatively quiet place to drink it and sort things out in her head.
At six thirty in the morning, Starbucks was an ideal setting for that kind of sorting. Ronnie didn't have to get out of her car to know that. She had visited the location enough to know that it usually was before eight with how few customers tended to come and how slow mental traffic tended to run in the morning anyway because the majority of people she could hear in her head tended to be as sleepy and in need of their fix as the 'silent' ones frequenting the coffee shop, which was good. Very good. That was how she liked it, how she needed it to be this morning. She needed to be able to hear herself think without having to strain over a chorus of dissonant mishmash. That she could had her climbing out of her car with purse in hand, a spring in her step, and a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. Perfect.
Well, almost. It would have been perfect if it had had an in-ground pool and she hadn't forgotten her hoodie in the car, but they didn't have an in-ground pool and she wasn't about to go back for her hoodie. For one, it was only a short sprint to the doors, which she pushed open unceremoniously, yet with some sense of urgency for her desire to leave the cool air where it stood. If her pajamas turned a head or two, she didn't mind. That was kind of the point. She was cute as a button, not to mention comfortable, and she was showing her school spirit, or something like that. The denizens of Starbucks could think what they wanted as long as the thoughts she could hear continued to play like soft elevator music on a slow Wednesday night at the mall.
"Morning," was all the warning she offered the cashier before she fired off her order. All in all, it took her fifteen seconds, after which she was quick to plant herself in the nearest chair at the closest table to wait with ticket in hand. As slow as they were that morning, it couldn't possibly take them longer than ten minutes to fill her order. In the meantime, she had things to think about, like homecoming. Mostly homecoming and how, in retrospect, it actually bothered her that her brother had decided to catch the bus to chat with his friends instead of catching a ride with her despite the fact that it had been for the best. She wouldn't have been able to hear herself think if Lani had been sitting across the table from her. She knew that like she knew that he was growing up, but -- and she had to yawn, reach up and clamp her hand over her mouth -- who gave him permission to grow up so fast, anyway?
Brat. Maybe she would nibble on his Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin before she gave it to him. Maybe. She could deal with Flipper anytime, though. Homecoming and being dateless was another story. What to do? Right. Coffee. Waiting. Hurry up, please.
