two blondes and a bakery
Who: Harper and Kahlan
When: Afternoon
Where: Sherry's Bakery
If Kahlan had been a different kind of person, she might have been content to sit around all day, allowing Keelin to pay for her room and board. Her desire to search for a job was not one born out of a want to repay her sister for her kindness at allowing her to stay at the apartment, but instead was because she had never been the type of person content to do nothing. For more than a decade, Kahlan had made a life of getting up at dawn and baking the day away. When she went to bed at night, her body was beyond exhausted from work – and she loved it that way. Since the bakery burned down, she had begun to make a habit of sleeping until noon and waking up to do nothing but lay around. It was nearly driving her insane. In any case, she had needed to get out and away from Keelin. She ignored all comments on Woodhouse’s part regarding the fact that she had only spent two -- going on three -- days with her sister after twenty-five years of separation. Something was going on with Keelin, something that was both connected to and separate from Kahlan all at the same time. She had sat in the living room for hours watching the other woman clean to the point that she was surprised that there wasn’t a hole worn into the counter -- or the walls, or the floor. Obviously, Keelin had some issues. Kahlan was currently making her way down the sidewalk, in the only nice clothes she owned, scanning over the business fronts for something that suited her. In her hand was a newspaper, practically bleeding from all the circles and marks she had made while looking through the classifieds for a job. There had been nothing that caught her eye or interested her, but she had it on her nonetheless as a last resort. ‘You think you can just walk into a place and convince them to give you a job? You’re hilarious.’ “And how many jobs have you applied for?” Kahlan jostled the pocket Woodhouse was currently riding in just to annoy him. If he wasn’t going to offer any help, then he could keep his mouth shut. She had just rounded the corner, passing a computer repair shop, when she stopped dead in her tracks. Her nose should have smelled the bakery much longer before she finally spotted the shop. Sherry’s Bakery, huh? The shop front reminded her so much of the one she had owned. Kahlan opened the door with a look of serious curiosity as she inspected every inch of the place, comparing it to her bakery. She walked over every inch of the floor before making her way to the counter and ringing the bell to call whoever was working to attend to her. Before she decided that this was the place she wanted to work, Kahlan had to test the product she would be associated with. The last thing she wanted was a job at the worst bakery in town. When the girl finally found her way to the front, she offered her the most polite smile she could muster. “Hi, I’d like one of your cupcakes, one danish, and a creme puff.” ‘Must be nice to use that whole “eating for two” excuse.’ Kahlan would have been offended if she didn’t know that Woodhouse meant it sincerely. She was already digging into her pocket for the last few bills she had to her name before the girl had finished compiling the order. “Are you all by yourself today?” It was entirely possible that this girl ran and worked in the bakery all by herself, but Kahlan didn’t find the possibility very likely. |
