The traffic lights, the electronics in the store he had just left, the cell phones and PDAs and other devices of everyone in the surrounding area, even the cars. Teddy should have been able to feel all of it but it was like the lines connecting him to everything had been severed. It left him feeling strangely adrift, oddly alone, and he had to swallow against the dryness of his throat before he could think about what she was saying. He could feel the weight of her gaze on him, the intensity of it, the unwavering stare of someone who wasn't afraid to ask questions to get what they needed. Some people weren't comfortable staring. This girl, whoever she was, obviously didn't have that problem. So Teddy turned his gaze back on her, remembering from his experiences with Omega that it was important not to seem cowed or weak. This girl might be a were of some kind and it was important, if she was, to appear confident, or at the very least not quite so skittish and scattered as he felt.
To his credit he actually managed a small smile. It didn't last long but it showed itself nonetheless. "I missed a call, that's all." Not the best lie but he waved the phone he was still clutching a little to add some credibility to it and then moved right along before it could really sink in properly. "I think there's a kitchenware store not far from here," he said, thinking back to when the team had first arrived and he'd gone exploring, mostly looking for coffee but also to get a good idea of the layout. All information he could get from cameras and other systems he could hack into but it was helpful to know the physical look and layout, just in case. "Yeah, it's just down this block and to the right," he said with more confidence, turning to indicate further along the route she had presumably already been taking, making a gesture in the direction she would need to turn. "See where that Stop sign is? Just down there."
