echoes of the past
Who: Kahlan and Keelin
When: Early Morning
Where: Keelin's Apartment
Scarlet Oak. Her sister could not have found a more middle of nowhere place if she tried – unless she did try, in which case kudos were in order. It felt as though it had taken her forever for her to get here. Kahlan wasn’t sure that even if she wasn’t pregnant the multiple flights and a long cab ride over to Camelot Place, where Keelin lived, wouldn’t have exhausted her. All she wanted to do was curl up in a ball and sleep for hours. And eat. Kahlan felt like she was about to starve to death. What she wouldn’t do for a sandwich or a burger or – really, any food would do. Unfortunately, there was the whole sibling reunion to get out of the way. ‘Do you think there will be tears? I rather hope not. Humans are so dreadfully ugly when they cry.’ Woodhouse popped his head out of the pocket of her sweater to offer his opinion. “Odds are likely, little man.” The mouse sighed and tucked himself back into her pocket to show his disdain for the nickname. “If you don’t mind, could you come out in the open to sulk? I would really hate for you to get crushed in a heartwarming embrace.” ‘If only…’ Kahlan smirked as she ascended the stairs with her incredibly light suitcase as Woodhouse ascended her person and settled on her shoulder. She had long ago grown accustomed to her familiar’s suicidal statements. She wondered if Keelin had ever discovered her magic, and, if she had, did she have a familiar that gave her as much grief as Woodhouse did. The mouse followed the thought with one of his own: something grim about ending both their grief that she pointedly ignored. Kahlan took a deep breath meant to steady herself, but if anything it only made the nerves building in her stomach worse. As much as she hated to admit, she had imagined this moment a dozen times over in her mind. Even after her mother died and her bakery got off the ground, she would think of Keelin from time to time and wonder what her life was like now. Would she look the same as she did when they were children? Would she even remember who Kahlan was? ‘Are we going to stand out here all day?’ He was right, it was now or never. “What do you say, Woody: bump or no bump?” 'First, I’m going to pretend you referred to me by my full name. Second, does it matter?' Kahlan weighed the pros and cons quickly in her mind. On the one hand, it was always a coin toss when it came to her glamours. They were the part of her that came from her father, and because of that, she had never devoted much time to learning how to use them. That was Kylie’s specialty. On the other hand, she already assumed that this surprise visit was going to be a lot for Keelin to handle; adding on the fact that she was pregnant would be a little too much at this point. She called upon the glamour she had been using lately to cover her stomach; it would remain there so long as she kept it in her mind for it to remain there. Kahlan balled her hand into a fist, ignoring the fact that there was a slight shake to it, and knocked on the door to her sister’s apartment. After what felt like an eternity of waiting, the door creaked open. Her jaw almost dropped at the sight of Keelin, her baby sister all grown up; she looked different from what she remembered, but there were still traces of the girl she had known in the woman’s face. “Hello.” She pulled up her brightest smile and waited for Keelin to recognize her. |
