Bunny's grin coupled with her mom's made Jack crack a smile as well, though this was all still very weird for him. When Bunny's dad started to talk Jack furrowed his brow. He'd never been treated like anyone's kid before, not really. Not like normal people who didn't hate their kids treated them. He had never had a curfew, though whatever time he came home he had a chance of getting beaten anyway and keeping him in school was the very, very least his mother had been willing to do for him. He tried not to laugh when Bunny sorted at the curfew rule, and he nodded as Bunny's dad unraveled the list. It all seemed reasonable, normal even, and Jack was scared but excited about living in a normal house for once.
Jack did not say a word at Bunny's little outburst about college, though it was funny how her parents ignored her as if she hadn't spoken. He continued nodding as Bunny's mom went on about chores - he'd need help with that, since beyond trying to clean a dish or two in a really tiny sink he never really had to do them, but surely he could figure it out. As the whole list of conditions was out in the open it felt to Jack like he was given a chance at a normal life. Maybe he could finish school, and get a job, and be a normal person despite being a freak whose mother hated him. Maybe he didn't have to die just yet, maybe he could find a way to stop from wanting to die. Just being away from his mother all this time had done wonders for his mood already after all.
"I don't know what to say. I don't... No one's ever been this nice to me, no one's ever taken care of me...you know, not really. I don't know if I even know how to live like a normal person, in a normal house, you know, without all the dysfunction and with all the rules. But I promise I'll try. And I'll do everything you say, and I'll stay out of trouble." His eyes were getting moist now, but Jack tried very hard not to actually start crying. "I don't know how to thank you for doing this for me, but I will figure it out. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Digby, seriously."
