a walk in the park
Who: Melina, Darlene, and Jin (NPC)
When: Late Afternoon
Where: The park
Note: "/Spoken in Korean/."
“Jin watch where you’re going please!” Darlene called out to her son, who had almost run into someone walking past him for the fifth time. When she had bought him the nerf football for his birthday, it had been when the hope that the two of them could play with it together. She shouldn’t have been surprised, however, when Jin made it clear that if it wasn’t Ky tossing it back and forth with him, then he wanted to play with the ball alone. She sat on a bench, in the shade of a tree, trying not to feel bitter as she watched her son throw the ball into the air and run to catch it as it fell. Ky can’t even throw as well as me, anyway… “/I wasn’t hurting anything./” She took a deep sigh and gave Jin a tired look. True, she had understood what he said (this time), but the fact remained that her son had a nasty habit of only responding to her in Korean when they were out in public and she scolded him. Jin fully understood his mother’s limitations with the language, but it was far too amusing to him to watch her grow red-faced and embarrassed when people gawked at them, wondering if he actually belonged to her or not. “Yet.” Darlene shook her head when Jin rolled his eyes and returned to his play, completely disregarding her. She pulled her hair back, which she was convinced had increased tenfold in volume thanks to the humidity, as she moved from the bench and took a seat in the grass nearby. Her hands went down to run over the grass, weaving her fingers through the blades. Despite the heat in the air, the grass felt cool against her bare legs. She felt all her stress from the day and agitation with Jin start to melt away. Darlene pressed her hand firmly to the ground and smiled when she encouraged a flower to spring forth from the earth in-between her fingers. Earth always felt the happiest in the park, an emotion that was infectious once she connected herself to it. She took a deep breath in and by the time she released it, several more flowers sprouted upward to join the first. It was a small patch of flowers, but Darlene thought they were a beautiful addition, however small, to the corner of the park she was sitting in. Feeling much more at peace, she looked back toward Jin to make sure he was still playing safely nearby. Her heart ached over the fact that he was not an Earth elemental, much as it always did when the two of them were outside together. Just as she wanted to be able to play with Jin, she wished that he could sit with her and appreciate the feeling of Earth all around them. But all her peace was cut short when Darlene realized that he was about to collide with a woman walking by. “Jin!” She yelled out to him as she threw herself up and into motion. Her face contorted in a cringe when her call caused her son to stop, while the ball continued to fly at its target. “Hey,” she was now waving her arms, trying to catch the attention of the other woman. “Watch out!” |
