Leaving Missy's house was really the last thing she wanted to do, but she had missed so much work in the last couple of weeks that she knew that missing another day was just impossible. She hated having to walk away from the protection and the security of Missy's arms. And more than that, she absolutely hated it because of what she had promised last night, that she would never leave. Sure, Jadyn knew that she had meant it metaphorically, that physically never leaving Missy's side was just ridiculous, but that didn't stop her from hating that the outside world kept moving when she and Missy had just reunited. To keep her lights positive, she had kissed Missy before leaving, promising to call her as soon as she was leaving work. Jadyn went home to change, washing her mess of hair quickly before she went into the shop. She was just about to head out of the door when she heard a car pull up. The doors slamming brought her outside to find Michael and a Cecil who was only too happy to see his mommy. "Heeeey baby," She cooed as she bent over to scoop him up into a fierce hug. Her mind had been so far gone these past few days that she had let Michael keep him. But now Michael was ready to have a day to himself and explained that if she didn't pull her weight as a parent then he was filing for custody as he roughly shoved Cecil's diaper bag into her chest. Muttering under her breath about how he should just fuck off, Jadyn decided to take Cecil to work with her. They definitely needed to spend some time together and he always seemed to like hanging out at the shop. She stopped to buy some donuts to take with them and filled Cecil's sippy cup with some milk so that she could be sure the boy had some breakfast. She didn't trust Michael as far as she could throw him, even though he insisted that Cecil had oatmeal for breakfast. Yeah, okay. It didn't help that Jadyn just wanted Michael to just stay away from her. After spending last night with Missy and finally having her baby boy in her arms again, Jadyn felt herself slipping into a state of normalcy. She pressed a tender kiss to Cecil's temple, taking in his scent. She hated admitting that she liked the shampoo Michael bought for him. When they arrived at the shop, Jadyn realized that all of the work that she had been putting off had finally caught back up to her. She was determined to stay until she had put a dent in the pile of work. When Jadyn was paying too much attention to a footstool or a table in front of her, Cecil would transform into a tiger and start pawing at his mother's feet. He even tried to scale her at one point, causing her to start laughing uncontrollably and stop what she was doing so she could properly tickle the little guy. They took a break for lunch and had themselves a picnic in the back room which devolved into a dance party between the elemental and the baby were. How had she been so foolish to let Michael keep him for so long? God. Now that she had both Cecil and Missy back, Jadyn was actually happy. Stop the presses. Hell had truly frozen over. The only problem with being distracted at work while trying to catch up on commissions and designs was that she ended up spending way too much time there. Cecil had amused himself for a while until he fell asleep in an arm chair which gave Jadyn a chance to really focus on what she was doing. She carved, welded, and painted until her eyes were starting to feel like lead behind her plastic goggles. Looking at her watch, she realized that it was late. Way too late. She glanced out of the window and saw that it was dark, and it had been for quite some time. Shit. Normally, she would just sleep in the shop, but seeing Cecil in that armchair, Jadyn knew she needed to get him home. "Come on, baby." She whispered, picking him up and grabbing her things. He grunted and nuzzled into her neck, not realizing the edge of fear that fluttered in his mother's voice. Other people could go out at night and not be attacked by vampires. Jadyn just had to believe that she could be as lucky as the others. The faster she got outside and going, the faster she could get them home. She momentarily forgot her promise to call Missy; her ears were straining to hear every sound that echoed in the darkness. I'll call her when I get home. Where we're safe. Cecil fidgeted in her arms, his keen nose picking up a new scent, but not knowing how to place it. |
