"Roxy!" A sharp elbow to her arm and Roxy's eyes flew open with a gasp. "You may have me resigned to riding in the passenger seat with white knuckles the whole way, but I'd like for you to stay awake during it." "Sorry..." The apology was muttered almost under her breath to her partner, Marcus, as she opened her eyes wider in an attempt to keep them focused on the road. It had been a long time since Roxy had fallen asleep at the wheel, even if it was only for a few seconds. She usually managed to keep her caffeine and sugar levels high enough so that she was riding a constant high until she finally made it home and passed out in the safety of her own bed. The trick was to make sure that you constantly refueled yourself, even before those tell-tell drowsy symptoms started. She had began her morning with a tall cup of black coffee and a double shot of espresso, but the overload of caffeine must have shorted out her plan, hence the sleep-driving act. "What do you say we take our lunch break? I'll get some coffee and meet you back here in thirty?" "Right. Because I want to die on a full stomach." Roxy sighed and rolled her eyes. "Fiiine. Fine. You can drive the rest of the day." It was hard to really put up much of an argument when she had almost wrecked them -- even if it was only a few seconds. Marcus laughed at her, knowing that it was going to kill her to have to ride in the passenger seat the rest of their shift; of course, that didn't mean that he was suddenly going to change his mind and let her take over the wheel. It was so rare that she ever gave up control of the ambulance, he was likely going to take advantage of her concession. After pulling into the parking lot of her favorite coffee shop, Roxy reached around to her bag, pulling out her make-up for a quick touch up while Marcus made the call in to dispatch. The two of them parted ways without a word: her partner left to go find some actual food and she went off to wait in line while contemplating the benefits of a pure caffeine IV. Sure, it would probably make you so jittery that you could phase through walls, but it would certainly make working for seventy-two hours much more bearable. Sipping on her large cappuccino, Roxy decided to take a walk around the block hoping that the movement would help to wake herself up the rest of the way. She busied herself with window shopping, which required almost all of her self-control to not get caught preening in her own reflection. "This is just not working." Roxy made a face as she looked down to the ineffective coffee. She needed more -- more sugar! As if sent to her by a higher power, her eyes drifted ahead to a sign marked Sherry's Bakery. Surely she would be able to find something sugary in a bakery. The door opened with the tinkling of a bell and she looked around, pleased that there didn't seem to be many people inside that she would have to wait in line behind. Roxy walked up to the counter, looking for someone to take her order. She saw a bell by the register and, unable to resist, she pressed it so that it dinged sharply. When you hadn't had a sound night of sleep in a while, the littlest things were always the most amusing. |
