Daisy stood just outside the iron gate that wrapped itself around Amazing Grace Church. She took a slow drag off the cigarette she held between her fingers as she studied the building, watching for anyone inside or around the place. A breeze swept by, sending a cold chill down her spine. Even though the temperature was still in the upper 60s, Daisy felt as though it had to be much colder than that. Kentucky wasn't as far South as one could go, but she was accustomed to the heat keeping a little later into the month than this. The colder temperatures were a large part of the reason that she wasn't such a big fan of the more northern states. Her limbs started to shake from the cool air -- a fact that could have easily been prevented if she had the presence of mind to dress appropriately -- however it wasn't just the weather that caused her to be so jittery. Daisy took the cigarette out of her mouth and began to chew on the cuticle of her thumb. She and Joseph weren't out of money, at least not as far as she knew, but that didn't mean that it would hurt to always have a little extra. With the life that they led, and the precautions that they had to take to make sure that Joseph never went back to jail, you never knew when you needed to buy an emergency bus ticket to get out of dodge. Her task was simple enough: slip into the church and take the money in the donation box. She had been assured that it would be easy, so easy that even she couldn't screw it up, but that didn't make her any more excited to do it. There had been a point in her life when she had been religious, or at least as religious as a child could be. Her mother never had the time to take her and Bobby-Jo to church, but that didn't mean that God wasn't present in their household. The older she got, the less concerned she became with religion. Daisy couldn't even remember the last time she prayed since she left home; if there was a God, she doubted that he was concerned with someone as insignificant as her. Even despite that belief, she took another long drag of the cigarette and prayed that she wouldn't suddenly be struck by lightening just for being so close to a church with such sinful intentions. Now or never, she thought to herself, throwing the cigarette butt into the woods. It wasn't the first time that she had been asked to do something that she didn't want to. Every boyfriend she ever had wanted something that only she could give them, that only she could do. Joseph was no exception, but he had been the first that she had not cared to do things for. More often than not, all he had to do was say jump and the only hesitation she would have would be to ask how high, but moments like this were when her devotion wavered just slightly. Oh, Daisy was going to take money from this church and all the good people who had donated to help it -- there had never been a question of that -- but she was no where close to being okay with it. Her heart felt like it was about to beat out of chest when she reached the large front doors. She held her breath as she tried the latch, equal parts hoping and terrified that it would be unlocked. Its shear size made it a little more difficult than expected to open, but Daisy managed to slip in without making much noise. Whatever relief she felt was instantly squashed when the door made a hard slam as it closed. Her eyes pinched tight and she stood still, listening for movement from someone inside. With the coast seemingly clear, Daisy continued on. The donation box was just inside the sanctuary, protected by nothing more than a simple lock. Maybe this will be easy. She slipped a pouch from her back-pocket which stored a set of lock-picks. It took her all of a second to study the lock and pick out which size would work best. Biting her tongue, Daisy went to work, hoping that she could pop the lock and take off with the cash before anyone stumbled upon her. "I'm really sorry about this big guy," she muttered under her breath as she unfastened the lock and lifted the lid to the box to take out the money inside. |
