There had been a car accident not far from the hospital itself, a severe one that had required the fire department to cut two people out of their vehicles, and when the victims had arrived at the hospital, Nick and his team had been waiting for them outside the doors. The interns were restless and nervous, shuffling their feet and wringing their gloved hands, both of which Nick had put a stop to not only with a pointed glance but the assurance that if they kept their heads and remembered their training they would do just fine. They weren't new interns, they had done this before, but some of them never quite got used to emergency situations, much more comfortable up in surgery itself, surrounded by beeping monitors and masks and nurses with charts. It was completely different down here, right in the belly of the beast so to speak, and it was Nick's job to make sure they kept their cool. It was on his head if they did something stupid and killed someone.
There were five victims altogether, though one was DOA, beyond their help by the time the ambulances arrived in the bay. Nick turned his attention on those they still had a chance of helping, of saving, and soon enough he was absorbed in his work, moving from one patient to the other, issuing orders and assignments and keeping as much of an eye on things as was humanly possible. When he heard a raised voice at the nurse's station, he was in the middle of double-checking one of the interns' assessments. With a nod and a confirmation that they were right on the money, he excused himself hurriedly and made his way over to the agitated young woman at the desk. "What's going on here?"
"She's looking for Marcus Johnson?" the nurse said, making it into a question.
"Dr. Johnson is with a patient," Nick said, taking his eyes from the nurse and settling them on the new arrival. He quickly placed her using her badge as a reference, and went on to ask, "Is there something we can do for you, Dr. Wilkes? As you can see, we've got our hands full down here." And he was in no mood to deal with unnecessary interruptions. For the moment, until he found out exactly what was going on here, he would be patient, but he couldn't be spared for long and he hoped he had made that very clear.
