Who: Brendan and Lizzy.
Where: The library.
When: Early afternoon.
Ronnie had cut the work day short after they’d completed their latest job. It was too hot to stay out in the sun any longer today, he’d said, and Brendan actually hadn’t wanted to debate the point with him for a change. It really was too hot, almost unbearably so, and the more time spent in the shade or in air-conditioned buildings, the better. Perhaps that was part of why he’d ended up here, in the public library, glad for the air movement and the cool, crisp quality of it as it washed around him almost as soon as he was through the door.
That wasn’t all though, and he couldn’t pretend otherwise. As soon as he was inside and in view of the stacks and the signs clearly labelling each section, his eyes were searching for one in particular. How would they label it though? Myths and legends? Did that really apply now that the Light of May had been and gone? Perhaps not. That would count out folklore as well. Maybe the best thing to do, he had decided, was wander, and after a smile at the librarian who eyed him from behind the desk -- one she returned, thank goodness -- he set off at a steady, curious pace, on his own kind of hunt.
For a while he wandered, not really sure what in particular he was looking for, but trusting that he would know it when he saw it. Every now and then he touched his fingers to the spine of a book, read the sideways title, but he kept moving on, never stopping for more than a few moments at a time. It wasn’t until he reached what was clearly a sort of study area, dotted generously with tables and chairs, complete with lamps for those who stayed late into the evenings, that he slowed properly. Though he was still unsure of where exactly he ought to be looking, a few of the titles nearby held at least a little in the way of promise.
It was as he was moving out of the way of a woman with two children in tow that he bumped the table closest to him, enough to unbalance the books set close to the edge. With a thump they hit the carpeted floor, and Brendan immediately turned to retrieve them. “Sorry,” he offered, shaking his head with something of a sheepish laugh. “My spacial awareness kind of sucks today.”
