'Why does your mom live in Australia? When is she going to come see you? Can I meet her? Do you think she would like me?' Pugsley's voice filled her mind at a hundred miles an hour, not stopping to take into consideration that she was distracted by the phone that was held up to her ear. I don't know. She usually doesn't like animals that much. 'But I'm not an animal...' Keelin rolled her eyes as her attention shifted back to her phone, tugging slightly at his leash. "Keely, are you listening to me?" Her mother's voice sounded almost tinny coming over the other line. "Yes, mom -- I'm still here. Just walking Pugsley and he's a little distracting." Her mother had only seen digital pictures of the puppy and had no idea that he was more than just a hyperactive canine. She couldn't stop herself from grinning as he hopped up the stairs, his back legs stretching and shaking slightly as he tried to climb up the steps in front of the apartment building. She opened the door to let her familiar hop in first. "Ah, well something that adorable, I can understand why you'd be so distracted, but we weren't talking about your pet. We were talking about your date." Keelin knew that. She remembered what her mother had said before Pugsley jumped in. Now he was looking back at her with his tail wagging, fully aware of the glow that was rising in her cheeks and the quirked corners of her lips. He knew what that facial expression was all about. He knew that she was thinking about Reggie. And now her mother wanted to know all about the date. 'You should just tell her! She wants to know all about Friday night. She gave her familiar an admonishing look, her mother's voice still carrying on. "I want to know where you went, what he's like... I won't have you getting roped in with some ear-pierced rock-n-roll hoodlum. And I hope he paid. No matter how much things have changed, you'll always need a chivalrous man. Your father agrees --" "Mom." Keelin laughed lightly as walked through the halls, thankful she and Pugsley were the only ones out and about. Seeing someone else in the hallway would warrant an even more vibrant shade of pink to dance in her cheeks. 'You should tell her about Reeeeggieee.' Pugsley's voice sang in her mind as she reached into her pocket for her keys, fumbling as he hopped excitedly around her feet and causing the leash to tug at her wrist. He was especially excited because he had just spotted a certain earth elemental from across the hall. "I don't know why you're getting so worked up. It was just one date, not a marriage proposal." Without any sort of warning, two voices exploded in Keelin's mind. She couldn't tell which was Pugsley's and which was her mother's, but she clearly heard someone say, "That is not funny to joke about, Keely," and the other voice say "But wouldn't you like a second date??" If she had taken a second, she probably could have figured out that the first set of words came from her mother and the second from her familiar, but she was too busy concentrating on finding the right key to unlock her door and keeping her wrist held straight while Pugsley continued to bounce at her feet. "I know, I know. And sure, a second one would be rather nice." As soon as the words fell out of her mouth, Pugsley gave a mighty tug, jerking the leash from around Keelin's hand, causing the keys to hit the floor with a rattle. As soon as he was free, he trotted over to Reggie, tail wagging madly. 'Did you hear?! Did you hear?!!' Meanwhile, as Keelin bent down to retrieve her keys, she glanced over to see where Pugsley had ran off to. "Um. I'll have to call you later, Mom." She didn't wait for her mother to respond before she hit the 'end' button and rose slowly to her feet, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear and wishing desperately her cheeks weren't as pink as they felt. |
