She is still somewhere - ponytails and sudden laughter
Who: Elaine and Natalisa
Where: Outside of L'Attique
When: Early evening
"Yeah, but you said-"
"I know what I said."
"But it doesn't matter?"
"...pretty much. Look, I said I can't make it and I can't. That's all there is to it so you need to just accept it. Maybe I'll stop by next month."
"Yeah. Sure. Whatever."
"Later kid." Click.
"It's not 'kid', it's 'Laney'..." To her credit - and here she thought she really deserved some points that could be traded in for a cookie or brownie - Elaine did not throw her phone across the store. She just stared at the screen displaying 'Call Ended' for a few minutes before she put it away. Really, she should have known better than to get her hopes up that Tanner would actually come to Scarlet Oak for the full moon. It had been a little over a year since he had taken the time to come by and visit. Elaine would have been more than happy to go visit him wherever he was, but Tanner had this thing. It was called 'never tell Elaine where I am' because he probably figured that she would do exactly what he so rarely did: take the time to swing by and hang out for a bit. All that she wanted from him was a healthy, decent relationship and all that she got was something no better than what she had with Martin. Except Martin never promised to do things with her only to back out; he never promised to start with. Just shrugged that same shrug that he had been giving her for as long as she could remember before going back to his paper or crossword or even, and this was the worst one, bird-watching. "Here's a thought," she had shouted at him one day, frustrated nearly to tears. "If you like watching birds then why won't you ever look at me?" Out of all the full moons she had gone through she was ninety-nine percent certain that he had only been there for the first. Running her hands through her hair, Elaine walked into the backroom to retriever her umbrella. "I'm heading home, Layla!" she shouted, unsure of where her boss was at the moment in time and feeling too frustrated with the world to go looking. Maybe she should have, but seriously, Elaine did not want to have to go through the reasons of why she looked upset and no those were not tears stinging at the corners of her eyes. She was far too old to be this disappointed just because one of her dad's was failing at life again.
Even though she had picked up the umbrella with the intent of actually opening it so that her nicer clothes did not get ruined by the rain, Elaine kept it closed and tucked up underneath her arm as she stalked out of the shop. If it had not been raining then she would have just left her clothes inside and shifted so that she could fly home. Flying always helped to relieve the upsets that came from dealing with any member of her family. Other things helped too, but flying was always the healthiest choice. With it raining, though, she was going to have to hope that she had something left in the cupboard at her trailer to keep her calm so that she did not end up crying herself to sleep. Whenever she did that she woke up with a headache. Goddamnit, I went the wrong way. Elaine made an irritated noise that sounded more like it should have come from a bird before whirling suddenly to stalk off in the opposite direction, paying no attention at all to her surroundings. At least out here, in the rain, it was impossible to tell that she was just crossing over the line that would lead to tears. No one would be able to tell why her cheeks were so wet. The real downside to paying no attention was that she collided with someone that, thanks to the rain, she had not even smelled.
"Can't you watch where you're going?" Elaine snapped, more bothered by the fact that she had actually been knocked off-balance than anything else. Usually that took another were and she was not smelling - ...what was she smelling? I know that... I... Elaine blinked and swiped the back of her hand at her eyes to clear away the rain and tears. "...do I know you?"
