It hadn't even occurred to Mason that in sending the nurse away to find out about the girl he'd escorted to the hospital in the back of that ambulance, he had inadvertently sent away the one person other people needed to see. Like the blonde who stepped up first behind and then beside him. That hadn't registered to Mason, and perhaps it should have; the hospital was already overwhelmed in the wake of the attacks, probably frustratingly understaffed and filled to capacity with all the wounded that had poured in, and if today was any indication, were still rolling through the doors. There was another nurse off on the other side of the desk, just through a door into a room he couldn't readily identify -- and didn't care enough to identify, if he was honest with himself -- and their eyes met briefly, just long enough for Mason to see her fleeting expression of disapproval. He stared back, and she looked away.
That was when the blonde beside him spoke, and he turned his head to the side and down to take her in. After her face, which was vaguely familiar, he took in her clothes, or more to the point, her uniform. SOFD. They probably looked a picture standing at the desk side by side, PD and FD, and at any other time Mason might have found that a little amusing, but not this evening. This evening he was just fed up. "I've had better days," he told her, his eyes on hers again now. After a moment, and a brief glance around -- she was no were, there was no need to hold her gaze as he would with another wolf -- he sighed again, quieter this time. "I guess, all things considered, it could be a lot worse." Mason didn't have it too bad, if he looked at the big picture. Sure, his knee was hurting like hell and his shoulder felt like it was stiffening up horribly already, but at least he hadn't been caught up in the bombings themselves. At least Kiley hadn't been involved.
Damn. He should probably contact Kiley. He hadn't thought about that before. He almost sighed again, his unharmed hand lifting to swipe over his face briefly, dropping back to the desk as he glanced to the fire-fighter beside him once more. "You bring someone in too?" He hadn't seen her in the waiting area, but beyond a general awareness of his surroundings he hadn't taken in much since his arrival. That wasn't like him, but he was too sore and wound up to do things the usual way.
