Micah heard the noise but it didn't quite register in his brain until someone was talking to him about it. He stood up without thinking and blinked the pain away. Someone was talking to him. Someone that made his insides curl up and stay that way when he looked at them. He'd never had this reaction to anyone before and wondered why this...woman was different. Honestly, his intial reaction was to run screaming but that seemed highly unnecessary (little did he know) and bad customer service at any rate. He turned to look at the damage and while he could have easily fixed the shelf, the Bibles were not something he could fix as easily. At least these things didn't burn his skin like some of the movies. It just got harder to move when he did touch them. The crucifix he used to wear felt like lead around his neck and he couldn't wear it for long without passing out.
"Yeah," Micah responded absent-mindedly at the question about school as he wondered what he was going to do about the books. Maybe he could get someone else to shelve it. He turned back around to the woman, though, and realized he'd been rude. "I'm sorry. I'm taking over someone's shift," he answered regarding the question about school. Poor girl was sick as a dog and no one else wanted to help her out except Micah. He didn't need the money necessarily, but he could never say no to a desperate request. Some people called it kindness. Micah sometimes wondered if it was a character flaw. "Thank you for pointing it out. I'll take care of the mess right away. Is there anything I can help you with today?" Micah asked, bringing some life (haha, irony) back into his personality.
