The human world - it's a mess
Who: Charlene and Frankie
Where: Lenore's Bookstore & Cafe
When: Mid-afternoon
Charlene loved going to Lenore's. It was the first place that she had gone with Roxy and it was also where she had found that very interesting book that had taught her all about human mating. Well, the parts she wanted to know about. She had seen another book since then that explored the other side and that was just weird. Landwalkers could be fascinating and disgusting all at the same time. She still needed to tell Cloelia about that. Not now though, no, now she had just finished having 'lunch' with Roxy at this place before the penguin had flounced back off to her job. Apparently something big and disastrous had happened the previous day in the big city with the large store that had all the littler ones inside - the mall - and people had died. Fallen in the river, too. That had intrigued her a little bit and she had decided that she needed to go and see what it was about. Dead people meant things that they did not need anymore. Like the shirt that she was wearing. She had not gotten that today, but a few months ago off a young woman who had somehow managed to drown in Lake Michigan. That she had taken a nibble out of her arm was absolutely no one's concern but her own. Roxy had liked the shirt so obviously it had been a good choice to take it rather than letting it go to waste by floating down with the dead body. Charlene would never understand why people got upset about clothes or jewelry being taken off the dead. They obviously did not need it anymore and she was putting it to good use! This was normally where she would turn to Nixie to get her sister to agree with her, only Nixie was not there. Her sister was probably at the bridge feasting away. All of the other merfolk might be there and Charlene was left on her own in Scarlet Oak, feet swinging as she sat on the chair and poked at the sandwich that Roxy had gotten her.
The penguin said that it was tuna and it had even smelled a little tiny bit like it. Then Charlene had taken a bite out of it and had needed to stop herself from spitting it back out. This did not taste like tuna was supposed to taste. Charlene had had fresh tuna, right off the fish, and it tasted far better. Of course there was the added delight of having managed to get one of the large fish, usually a group affair, and here there was just... sometimes she really did not understand how the landwalkers could enjoy meals that were practically free like this. Those bits of green paper and round coins that they handed over in exchange were not proper payment. This is why they get fat, Charlene decided as she watched a larger woman make her way out of the shop. She actually had to shift a little sideways to get through the door. Her sister who was not here, Kendra, she liked the fatter fisherman for some reason. Charlene had never enjoyed them as much because there was, obviously, too much fat and not enough of the meat. Nixie agreed - stop thinking about eating humans. Eat the sandwich. Charlene pulled a face at the sandwich and peeled off the top layer of bread before trying again. No, she still did not like it, but she was hungry and it was better to stomach her way through than walk all the way back to the river thinking about how much she wanted something to eat.
Finally finished, Charlene picked up the cold coffee drink that she thought tasted wonderful and turned to leave. Unlike in the water where she was always sure when something was moving up behind her thanks to the little waves the water gave off, she was all-but blind to things behind her here. Yes she could always turn her head and look, but she never remembered that, which was why she tended to bump into people. Like she did as she stood and stepped back to get her balance, which only ended up worsening as she stumbled forward and the drink in her hand tipped right over onto the shirt of the dark-haired woman who had been in front of her. Uh-oh. Charlene's eyes went wide and her mouth opened, but of course no sound came out as she just... stood and stared. That can't be a good thing, can it? No, no definitely not.
