Dreams are a joke here
Who: Dagmar and Linnea
Where: Redleaf Lake
When: Late morning
It wasn't hard for Dagmar to figure out where her mother was when she came home from the police station and saw that her car was gone. She could've assumed that she'd gone to see Bradley, but she actually didn't. The earth elemental hadn't been at the house for awhile now and that actually pleased her. The longer that he stayed away the better. But since she didn't think Linnea had gone there that left out for coffee with a friend -- highly unlikely since her mother didn't believe in drinking coffee made by other people -- somewhere with Kajsa, also doubtful because she had seen how her sister was behaving, and then the last option of in the river or at the lake. Missing car meant lake since if she wanted the river she would just walk down the hill. Valterri and Satu were, thank something holy or unholy, in school so Dagmar did not have to worry about either of them bothering her. She could have spent the entire day lazing at the poolside or stretched out over the air conditioning vent, soaking up the last vestiges of freedom before university started back up. Instead she had pulled on her bikini and a pair of "ragged" shorts before hoping in her car to go and find her mother. Slipper had even decided to slip along since apparently Strike had gone with her mother. The otter absolutely refused to be left out of these things.
'Why were you gone all morning?' the otter asked as Dagmar drove, music blasting in an attempt to discourage conversation. She'd temporarily forgotten that her familiar had a direct line to her mind. She shrugged. 'Bad answer.' "Police had questions about Zach." And no, she hadn't thought that he seemed like any sort of a monster. Why? Well it was a good thing they hadn't asked why because they wouldn't have gotten the real answer. The real answer being that it was impossible to think of someone like Zach as a monster when she'd spent the majority of her life being exposed to someone like her father. Compare Zach to Jokull and Dagmar was pretty sure that, no matter how many babies he'd eaten, Zach would still come out shining like a saint. Maybe that wasn't quite right but Dagmar really wasn't able to look at other people the same way as everyone else. Jokull was the monster under the bed and nothing was worse than him. Not even vampires. 'Hawks are worse.'
Dagmar pulled her car up next to her mother's and flipped her sunglasses on before getting out, waiting for Slipper to join her before she shut the door again. It only took a moment of searching before she spotted a pale shape floating out in the water, a fan of blonde hair around her head. The stories that she'd heard about merfolk in the waters, some of them from Linnea herself, didn't seem to worry the woman like she thought they should her daughters. Dagmar had met a mermaid and she didn't see why they were so scary. Weren't they just supposed to eat men or something like that? She didn't know her mythology all that well. Slipper beat her to the water, but only because Dagmar had to stop to kick her shorts off. Linnea hadn't acknowledged her presence so Dagmar drew in a deep breath and dove under the water, staying under for longer than she should have been able to -- she loved being a water elemental -- before she surfaced out in the deep not five feet from her mother's floating form. "The police talked to me today," she informed Linnea, not bothering with the 'hello' because she figured that she'd been given away the moment she'd pulled up. "About Zach." Feet kicking to keep her afloat, she brought one hand up to smooth back strands of hair that had gotten in her eyes. "Don't think I ever want to have to go through dealing with them again. Ever." Her eyes did their best to stay fixed to Linnea's face so that they didn't go to her stomach. "And I think I'm still sick."
