It'll be a good birthday Who: Amanda and Cameron Where: Home When: Evening
His phone was going off again and even though he'd put it on vibrate, Cameron would've sworn that it was vibrating in a distinct tone that mimicked the ringtone he'd assigned to his mother. Amanda's mother had a different tone -- he'd gotten tired of that one too -- and their father's shared one because when were either of them going to call? Only when they were really one of the mother's and they hadn't been able to get through any other way. Cameron hadn't grown up around those people without learning their tricks. He knew they preferred using them on Amanda because, for all he knew, they thought her to be the less busy of the two, but that didn't mean he didn't know how to avoid them. This time they had a legitimate reason to be trying to reach him, yes, but he'd spoken with them both that morning. Yes, it was Amanda's birthday and of course he understood that Tiffany wanted to do something for her since she was her daughter. But Cameron felt like being selfish and had declared that he was keeping her to himself that evening and their respective parents could just accept and have a little party of their own later. She was hiswife, they'd only been married for a week and he was going to be the one in charge of making sure that her first birthday as Amanda Calvert, or Blake-Calvert he still wasn't sure which she was going by, was a good one. And he hadn't ever known Amanda to define anything that involved his mother's presence as 'fun'. Another debate with that still-hearted Kennedy might be more fun than a birthday dinner with Amanda and his mother. And it'd be impossible to just have Amanda's parents over without his feeling slighted -- a big mess that was better avoided by insisting none of them show up.
So long as you weren't them or his poor phone. The one time that it hadn't been one of their mothers it'd been work asking why he hadn't come back from lunch. Because he'd needed to pick up Amanda's cake, her present and then he'd needed to go home so that he could make dinner. It certainly wouldn't have been impossible to take her out for dinner, but they already did that a lot for no reason other than 'we can'. Cameron didn't often put his cooking talents to use, they'd served him pretty well at times, but he'd decided that Amanda's birthday was worth it. The office could carry on just fine without him for half a day and if his father had something to say about it then he'd listen tomorrow.
Cameron had made sure to get the best ingredients and he hadn't rushed the preparation. The only thing they'd be eating that evening that he hadn't made himself was the cake and that was because decorating wasn't something he'd ever been good at. He also thought that it was a funny sort of cake. And he hoped that Amanda wasn't going to be upset that her parents weren't coming over for the evening. He didn't recall actually discussing their plans for the day so he'd just sort of gone with the idea that he'd gotten without really checking. Checking would've ruined the surprise.
