I'm no better than the ones before me
Who: Lumi and Ulysses
Where: Ulysses's apartment
When: Evening
Birthdays were something that Ulysses didn't really take all that much interest in. They were something that happened every year for everyone. Once you got past the milestone of twenty-one what was the point of keeping track? It wasn't like there were built-in rewards anymore if there'd ever really been. As a kid he'd enjoyed them because they were fun and all about him, as a teen he'd tolerated them because they came with occasionally interesting gifts and as an adult he accepted that they happened, that people might know, and that sometimes they'd give him gifts. But it was hardly the case that any of them gave him something worth his while, not even the people who knew he collected rare and unique artifacts. Since he'd recently moved to a new place he didn't actually expect even attempts at gifts today. No, it would be a day much like any other for the most part. He'd briefly considered tracking down Alexandria's apartment, or hole in the ground, so that he could leave her a little surprise on behalf of his birthday but had dismissed it after he received a call about a buyer interested in a vase that he'd begun to look at as more of an eyesore than anything else. It'd been beautiful before he'd learned that there were far more of them in the world than he'd originally been led to believe. Such a disappointment.
It wasn't until he was done with his work for the day that Ulysses recalled the presence of someone in Scarlet Oak who'd actually care about his birthday. Care and want to do something, at that. A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth as he thought about it for a moment before shrugging and reaching for his phone. Lumi Theiss was an absolute sweetheart, a rarity, and she was so very innocent-seeming that he couldn't help his intrigue. The other night when he'd brought her that drugged tea she had been so fragile-looking when she curled up at his side. Fragility that could be exploited, used, and Ulysses had every intention of doing so. Especially since he'd had that blue-haired girl slip through his fingers and out of sight the other day. His fingers gave a flutter at that thought, jaw clenching, and he had to take a moment to calm himself down before he dialed Lumi. It wouldn't do to sound upset when he went and invited her over for his birthday dinner that he hadn't intended on having. He'd be able to whip something up by the time that she came over. Because she would say yes, he was sure of it. Lumi wasn't the sort to turn an invitation down, most especially not if he used the birthday card like he intended on doing.
"Hey Lumi." Look at that, he'd even gotten a note of warmth worked into that. "Terribly busy tonight?"
