Even if Ross didn't like a damn thing that was before him - because that had happened before - he was never ruthless with his critiques. That worked for some critics, but never Ross. Why be demeaning to someone who obviously just spent a lot of time on their artwork? For him, it was better to be helpful than cruel. And in the end, art was always one of those things that everyone had a damn opinion about. It wasn't a science or exact, but that's what always made it interesting.
"Well, I won't be the first one to tell you that there aren't a lot of fresh ideas in the art world these days, but that doesn't mean you can't put your own spin on things." Same thing could probably be applied to any creative field. He was sure Adam could tell him that in regards to writing. How many takes on Romeo and Juliet were there again? That aside, Ross focused on the marina picture that Quentin pointed out, letting out a sharp whistle. "Nice place they got there! You don't see too many people drawing directly from life, seeing everything's abstract, but this is really great. The colors are very true to what the east coast is like on-" He paused and made a face. There he went going off on information he got from the kid's head instead of what had been told. He could work with that, though. "Are you from the east coast? If not, you do a damn good job at mimicking how it looks!"
