It was summer. The warmth of the season had bubbled over to uncomfortable and as the air hung heavily outside the delightful hum of the air conditioner tempted the ginger haired prostitute to stay inside. But, missing an appointment would mean no take for the evening and it was these meetings that made the frost box possible to begin with.
There was a deep sigh as Ruby slid her arms through bangles, adjusted her pin and slipped her toes into the strappiest heels she owned. She stood at the full length mirror that stood by her door- a guardian to fashion faux pas and gave herself the final once over - lint removal happened here, stray hairs were plucked off from her crisp cotton and her lipstick was blotted on a folded tissue before she grabbed her keys, purse, mobile phone and braved the blazing weather of London.
It was 6:30 PM and the air hadn't moved. It sat there suffocating in the exhaust of the traffic and that's when she realized that hardly anyone was moving about - walking that is.
Damn it.
Taxi's were in short supply on nights like these. It was too warm to walk anywhere without melting and she pressed the speed dial for the only taxi service that might be able to get her before she broke out in ribbons of sweat. She was just dialing the number when a black car pulled up to the curb. She looked up, surprised of course but more surprised that she recoginized the vehicle.
"I thought I was meeting you." She said to the shadowy fisgure beyond her reflection in the dark tinted window.
