"Well she's clearly been avoiding me, so it shouldn't be too hard unless she literally walks into me again," Liam agreed. But he didn't know if he could do that. To spend the next few years ignoring the sister he'd never met? He supposed there was some truth to what she said about being recruited; after all it couldn't have been easy to get him out of juvie a month early. But they didn't know how good you would be until you started learning, did they? Probably most of the teachers would be glad to get shot of him.
He was aware he was feeling overly sorry for himself, but frankly he felt like he deserved it. He'd had enough of being picked on for no reason, like he was a high school junior with bottle glasses and acne. At least when people had targeted him before they'd had a reason. He was too small. He was too hispanic. He was too stupid. He wasn't 'bad' enough.
He decided to let the subject drop. He didn't want Abi thinking he was a complete loser, if she didn't already. "Not much I can do about it anyway, right?" he said, trying to lift his tone. "I'll just have to keep trying not to fail out." He risked an unhappy sort of smile. "Thanks for listening to me complain."
