About:

[info]lechance is a steampunk, alternate society game with D/s themes.

We're a place to play. Without cliques, preconceived notions, or politics. IC stays IC, because there is only IC. It's just play, the way it was meant to be.

How does that work? Easier than you might think. Don't tell anyone who you are. Character and PB claims are done anonymously. Communication happens through character journals either in IJs private messaging system or the OOC comm.

Watch the OOC community closely. It's where all the important information will be going, as well as your means of communicating with other players.

Here's what you need to know.

The Game World:

This world isn't quite like ours. Not quite. In the wake of the rennisance, which occured in the mid-thirteenth century, society changed. Gender became less important and chosen roles were taken more into account. Technology continued at a slightly increased rate but with a great deal of aestheticism taken into account: Computers exist in the nineteen century (now), but they look like this and are powered by wind turning motors. The Americas were settled and warred, the Civil War having ended 8 years ago.

But the cultural norms had changed. Religion and spirituality took a curve, dominance and submission taking a portion of the practice, a spiritual belief and ritual. By the nineteenth century there are three roles in society:
Ascendant - The dominant partner in a relationship
Beloved - The submissive partner in a relationship
Two Spirit - A person who is both dominant and submissive in turns, a Two Spirit holds a special place in society.

A balanced household contains both an Ascendant and a Beloved. Whether their relationship is sexual varies in each. Some relationships are purely Courtly love, some Erotic love, some Platonic, and some romantic without sexuality. Or with sexuality. It depends on the individuals and their negotiated marriage arrangement. Marriages are arranged between the ages of 22 and usually 29, though it can go until one's 40s. Every marriage is arranged by a Two Spirit Yenta. What that amounts to is: everyone is matched with someone. There is a courting period of 2 months, at maximum, followed by the first time the Ascendant and Beloved are allowed alone together, unchaperoned. During their time alone they draw up a marriage arrangement, a complicated declaration that can be added to or subtracted from with the consent and signature of both parties. It negotiates everything from children to bed practices- both in and out of the marriage- to retirement plans. It can be amended at any time under the supervision of a Two Spirit and is a matter of public record.

At marriage an Ascendant places a red leather band around his/her Beloved's left wrist, and a Beloved places a Black leather band around his/her Ascendant's right wrist. They're thin and not meant to come off until one of the partners dies or the marriage is dissolved by other means- a very, very, very, very frowned upon practice as it upsets the fundemental balance.

Children identify as Ascendant or Beloved in a ceremony at their thirteenth birthday. They spend the next 7 years learning their role and if it's the position they want. At the end of that time they can choose either to continue with their role and be confirmed as an adult at 21 or change their path and explore another way, taking 3 years instead of 7.

They can also identify as Two Spirit and enter a lengthy study period. Two Spirits perform a special role in society. They form the majority of the government: Not all of it, but there are roles that are only performed by two spirits. Judges, Matchmakers, Sheriffs, and the mayor are all two spirits. Council members, officers, lawyers, can be any of the positions in society, but only two spirits can hold the highest.
Two Spirits are therefore held in the highest respect, however, they cannot marry or have a house hold, outside the normal flow of society due to their unique position.

The society is very Neo-Victorian as opposed to true Victorian. Both Ascendant and Beloved can and do hold positions outside of the household, have the power of the vote, and personal freedoms within the bounds of their marriage charter. However, either Ascendant or Beloved choosing to stay home (most often Beloved) is the the typical choice. The manners and clothing are middle Victorian, fitting with the time.

Remember. This is a fantasy universe with a steam punky feel. Think Wild Wild West, the Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. Get creative. If you think it can work with some string and steam, go for it. Just remember to note inventions that would be commonly known in the OOC so others know it too. We're big fans of world creation, just remember to let everyone else in on the creation.

The Game Concept:

The year is 1873. The City's name is LeChance. Located in Southern California, it sprung up almost overnight. Beautifully. The town is full of old world glory and decadance, a coastal city with paved streets, boardwalks on the coast, 100 miles from anywhere. Leroy LeChance, the developer has a city for 10,000 people without anyone to live in it. It has pharmacies and Doctor's offices. Repair shops and general stores. Dress Maker's and tailors and a dozen other things besides. He just needs people.

Land's free, buildings just need to be claimed. All anyone's got to do it bring the willingness to work to build the community. Ascendant, Beloved, and Two Spirit are all welcome. Leroy a two spirit, runs a salon- a salon, not a saloon. It's fancy, dandified, but all are welcome, provided they mind their manners.

Invitations were sent all over the world, inviting people for a new start. Specific people. Trains arrive daily (it's too far for Balloon travel), none from the same origin. Everyone was a stranger; almost calculatedly so. The yenta, the judge, the mayor in all towns all over advised anyone who asked their advise to go. It was an opportunity not to be missed.

Getting Started

Read the OOC and FAQ.

Decide on an avatar/PB. Go here, make sure they're not already in use and make a claim. Anonymously! If you're claiming more than one use separate comments. Be sure to follow the instructions.

Make a character journal. Make sure you hide your email from view. That's under 'modify personal info' and privacy settings.

Fill out the Character Sheet in third person. Make sure you remove the *s. Put the character sheet into your userinfo. This is your application and your writing sample.

Request membership to [info]lechance and [info]lechance_ooc

If we approve your membership requests you've been accepted and are ready to play. Two Spirit will get a special note from me; courting partners will be created in-game.

We have a friend all button that we'll do our best to keep up to date, but to be safe you may want to keep an eye on [info]lechance membership.

If we have questions or problems with your application we'll send you a PM to ask for clarification/changes.

Game play occurs through posts in the main community [info]lechance in the form of third person threads and opens, with first person correspondence (letters, calling cards, etc) are also posted in the main community.

Game Mechanics:

There are several ways to designate posts. In the headers, please use these notations when creating community posts:

X: Open to all -- Most common for party threads. Open to any and all characters. Threads within these posts can be answered by anyone although they are most commonly answered by only one person. If your character would like to join a thread already in progress with two other characters, please ask those players if you can join before responding. Threads in these posts can also be designated for certain characters by putting their names in the comment header. Example: http://www.greatestjournal.com/community/beforethex/160342.html

X: Open -- "Normal" mode of game play. Post started by one character, open for any other character to answer. If your character would like to join a thread already in progress with two other characters, please ask those players if you can join before responding. Example: http://www.greatestjournal.com/community/beforethex/158470.html

X: Named post -- Thread designated for a specific character. Only this character can answer the post. Example: http://www.greatestjournal.com/community/beforethex/158136.html

X: Closed or 3rd person -- Used to designate perspective posts and scenes that cannot be replied to. Example: http://users.insanejournal.com/_x5494_/9819.html

Because LeChance has a inter-household communication system, communications and messages between characters can also be posted (please post these in main community as well).

X: Private -- Private post readable only by the poster. [IE: A diary entry, a letter home]

X: Named message -- Post that can be read and commented on by those characters named in the cut. There can be multiple messages to different characters in one post, but only the message with your character's name is readable by your character. Correspondence done this way is considered to be private between those characters; no one else can read it. Example: http://users.insanejournal.com/_x5494_/472.html

The Rules:

X: This game allows for slash, het, and femmeslash. If you're not 18, don't join.

X: There are some subjects that due to their incendiary nature will not be allowed. This is meant to be fun and light. These subjects are: rape, child abuse, torture, suicide and self-mutilation due to depression. More subjects may be added as necessary.

X: Keep IC drama IC. In an anonymous game this should be a given but just in case it's not, we're telling you. Don't bitch about IC things OC. It's rude.

X: Please use appropriate warnings and cut tags for graphic sex, violence, and other not-work-safe material.

X: PBs can be only used once.

X: Our character cap at present is 4 characters - this is obviously an honor system. We can't know if you've taken more than 4 characters, but we do want you to stay reasonable and keep your characters active.

X: All Characters are required to play once a week. Not post to their journals but actually participate role-play. If you hit two weeks of inactivity without giving notice you will be warned. At four weeks the journal will be removed from the communities.

X: If a character causes constant disruption in game flow they will be warned. If they continue to cause disruption after the warning they will be removed.

X: We don't have a lot of rules. Please don't break the few we do have. It'll make me cranky. No one likes cranky mods.

X: Characters have to be OCs. Wouldn't fit into the world otherwise!

X: If you need a mod for something, please PM (from a character journal) either [info]baffledking or [info]matsujo9

X: More rules may be added.
