Effie had lifted the gloves from her pillow the night before, and carefully pressed them between clean handkerchiefs inside her bible. This morning, she packaged them up, wrote the destination address in neat script on the outside of the parcel, and requested the services of one of the chaperones to accompany her to the post office.

It was a fine morning, and a treat to be outside in precious daylight rather than using it to continue work on her next commission, but bobbins could be wound by lamp light and she was hardly overwhelmed with work. Her mind was still on the possible stitches she could use in the panels of the fan when they reached the post office and she stopped abruptly, clutching her parcel securely to her chest and stepping back when she saw someone on their way out. "Oh! Excuse me, please, I didn't...please, after you."

"How long were you in Boston?"

"Six months." She turned her face up to the sun, obviously enjoying the warmth. "Near exactly. Was it a long journey that you made to come here, Mr. Ibis?"

"Long enough," he made a face, then smiled, "From Illinois. Not near long as yours."

"Is Illinois very far?" Turning her eyes back to the road ahead, she matched her pace to his, too used to walking with taller people to struggle. "I'm still learning this country, everywhere is so big."

"It's about the middle," he shook his head slightly. "It's beautiful here though."

"Oh, it really is," she agreed readily. "And I'm learning the geography, truly, my soul but there's so much of it! That means you were halfway across the country ahead of me - did it take a terrible long while?"

"Not very long," he shook his head, "It felt longer than it was, I'm sure. Did you come by train?"

"Oh, aye." She nodded, skirting an uneven paving slab carefully. "It might take longer than balloon," and it was certainly dirtier and louder, "but it gives a real appreciation of how far you've travelled, ye ken?"

"And slightly more comfortable," he offered, stepping over to give her room.

She laughed, soft and gentle, following his movement and settling back into a steady pace, scarce realising that they'd never discussed a destination. "That one's debatable, aye? The discomfort of a balloon is over sooner. Is that how you came to be here?"

He shook his head, "Rode, actually. It was long, but not terribly bad. Saw the country."

He was escorting her back to the hotel, not even thinking about it.

"You rode? All the way from Illinois?" Effie gave him a look that managed to convey admiration along with a healthy dose of doubt for his sanity. "My soul."

She didn't want to think too deeply about what sort of tools he might need, but oh, he had a nice smile. Even if he was trying to hide it. "Do you have a secondary trade, Mr. Ibis? I mean, I hope that undertaking will not be needed here for some while to come, the population all seem young, hale and hearty."

He smiled warmly, stopping them in front of the hotel, looking up at it, then at Mr. Fielding before looking at Effie again. "I'd like to call on you sometime if I may?"
