It was too much to keep to herself. Still clutching both the box and Mr. Ibis' last note, Effie almost ran down the stairs, heading for the hotel lounge. Hoping that someone would be there that she could talk to.

"I do have a tendency to talk to people," Hattie admitted, with a grin.

"And I dinna," Effie said, perfectly content with that and well aware that she'd got to know Hattie simply because of Hattie's tendency to talk to people.

"Well, I'm sure there's room for both kinds of people here," Hattie said, patting Effie's hand. "After all, those of us who like to talk do need people to listen to us!"

Effie laughed quietly. "Aye, well, I can always listen."

"You're easy to talk to," Hattie grinned. "It's almost like having Electra here!"

"She's the quiet kind, aye?" Effie teased gently.

"Oh no, neither of us are quiet! I meant in the way that you feel easy to talk to."

Effie blushed lightly, and glanced down. "I'm glad to know ye think so. Was I interrupting you when I came down?"

"Oh, not really." Hattie glanced down at her knitting patterns. "I was just looking through these to try and find a pattern for a shawl I've contracted to knit for Miss Blackwood, in exchange for her making me a day jacket."

"Did ye find one?" Effie asked, following the direction of Hattie's gaze and looking down at the patterns. "She's a fine seamstress."

"She is! Did you see the wedding dress she made? It was exquisite!" She shuffled the patterns a bit. "No, I hadn't made any decisions yet. I'd only just started looking, really. And there are so many of these I've always wanted to try."

"No!" Effie exclaimed. "Oh, a wedding dress, it must be so fine!"

And she was trying very hard not to think about her own wedding dress. After all, just because Mr. Ibis wanted to see her, didn't mean that he'd spoken to Mr. Lechance. Or agreed to the match. Or that they'd successfully complete their betrothal.

"May I help? With the patterns? Have ye a favourite?"

Hattie laughed. "Miss Blackwood had it displayed on a mannequin at the market. It really is fine. And yes, please do help. I just really want a selection that I can take to her to choose from."

"I was talking with Ms. Hammermill," Effie confessed. "She had a dress that had some lace torn and wanted to know if I could mend it."

She turned her attention to the patterns, leafing through them. "This is grand...but is she wanting something for pretty or to keep warm?"

"Pretty, I think," Hattie said, frowning slightly as she realised she hadn't actually asked. "It's not so cold here after all, and it'll still be warm."

She tilted her head. "You can mend lace, as well as make it? That's sounds insanely complicated!"

Effie nodded, and turned over a few more patterns. "Aye, it can be mended, some. If 'tis made that way, and no' so badly damaged. Sometimes 'tis easier to copy the pattern and make some new to replace it, but matching dye is a fair task."

"Yes, I can imagine," Hattie agreed. "It sounds very fiddly work, whichever way you go about it. I hate having to fix mistakes in my knitting." She glanced at the patterns. "I think I shall need to choose something not too complicated, unless it's one I've done before."

"'Tis easiest not to tear it," Effie agreed, with a soft laugh. "How's this, maybe?"

She teased out one pattern from the pile, a pretty, openworked pattern that looked complex until the repeating blocks of pattern were noted.

"Oh, yes, that looks like a good one. And this one too." She took out another, similar, pattern with pretty points at the bottom edges of the shawl. "I made this for my mother, in this gorgeous soft cream wool. I know I can do that one!"

"Oh, that's pretty," Effie agreed. "Have ye got yarn for it? I have nae seen a haberdasher in town save for the market day."

"I have a few different sorts with me, yes, though I'll need to buy more eventually. I'll take samples of what I've got along to Miss Blackwood with the patterns, and let her choose what she wants. I only have neutral colours, but I'm sure that will be fine. I wonder if we'll get travelling merchants coming to the market? I suppose there are things we'll all need eventually that we can't get here!"

"She must know of dyers," Effie pointed out, turning the pattern to look at the detail printed on the back. "Or I hear there's a tailor who has ideas about dyes, I mun find him soon and ask for I can ask more if I can match trim to a fabric sample."

"Oh yes, he would be very useful to know," Hattie nodded, adding another, less intricate, pattern to the pile of possibilities. "I don't know anything about dyeing; I've always bought my yarn ready-dyed before."

"I sell most of my lace plain," she explained. "The seamstresses dye it with the fabric, to ensure a match."

"That makes sense. It's more flexible then, too, I suppose. And a lot of people would want it plain anyway, wouldn't they?"
