WHO. Dante Macmillan & Ashley Davies
WHAT. Birthday surprise!
WHERE. Hogsmeade, Late Night
WHEN. Feb 5th
RATING. TBA
STATUS. Closed / Incomplete

It was definitely one of the colder nights in Hogsmeade, Dante realized as he took a spot on a wooden bench propped in front of Ashley's rented flat. His hands were shaking as they held a box on his lap, the defined cheeks and tips of his ears flushed red. He should have worn thicker, warmer clothes, he thought. But what was a little sacrifice for someone he cared about?

It's been a little over a month since the indicent that happened in Roger's New Years Party. It was the last time he'd seen or talked to Ashley, and the way they did wasn't exactly the best. He remembered, for some reason, that it was her birthday and figured someone needed to celebrate it with her. Earlier, he'd asked the elves for a special request, and after dinner, he'd taken the small round cake, placed it in a box and left the Castle. He'd been sitting there since, slowly freezing to death, wondering where she was... if she was going to go home at all, he thought...

Nineteen wasn't exactly a special birthday. It was just another day, and Ashley wasn't entirely in the mood to celebrate. She had to work that day, training, and it was in the middle of the week. What with everyone in her year off starting work, her friends were all busy, and there wasn't time to go out to a pub or have a party. And since New Years, Ashley didn't feel much like partying. So she had lunch with her father, and as he insisted, went home to have dinner with him and her mother after work. And that was where she changed out of her robes and into her normal winter dress, and Aparated home, back to Hogsmeade, to just go to bed.

She appeared in the road, the same spot she always did, adjusting her blonde hair and pulling her coat around her. Breathing out, the air formed around her face, and she could see her breath. It was cold. As she approached her home, she spotted someone seated on the bench in front of the home that she rented her flat in. Squinting in the darkness, she tried to make out who it was, her feet still taking her closer to the figure. She didn't need to get close to notice who it was, with his hair and his build, and she slowed down slightly, eyeing him curiously. "Dante?" Though she didn't exactly need confirmation; she knew it was him, she was just a bit surprised. "What are you doing here?" The last time she had seen him had been New Years, and they hadn't spoken much since. She still wasn't sure where they stood, though at least she knew he was speaking to her brother again.

dante had been distracted in keeping still so his body heat wouldn't leave him that he didn't hear her approach. However, upon hearing her familiar tone, he looked up, stood and greeted her with a smile. "Waiting for summer." he said in his usual sarcastic drawl before lifting the package he'd brought in the space between them. He opened the lid to expose the cake inside. He took his wand out, whispered an encantation and lit the candle he'd put in the middle before he started singing.

"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, Happy birthdaaaay." A pause. "Happy Birthday, Ashley." he finished off his small performance with a smile, lifting the cake towards her. "Make a wish, then blow the candle."

His sarcastic comment was met with a roll of her eyes, but once he opened the box, Ashley curiously peered inside. Her cheeks blushed, which she knew he couldn't tell because they were pink already from the cold, but she could feel the heat rising as she realized he had come there for her birthday. She laughed, shaking her head as he sang to her, her arms wrapping around her middle as she stood there. She certainly hadn't expected him, of all people, to do this for her, but it was very welcomed.

"You have a lovely singing voice," she replied, smirking at him as she took a step towards the cake. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she paused for a moment, thinking of what she could wish for. There wasn't much that Ashley wanted, it wasn't like she was going to be materialstic. So she thought, and once satisfied with her decision, she made her wish and blew out the candle. Rolling her lips into her mouth slightly as she looked over at him, she gave him a smile. "Thank you. You didn't have to come here...how long were you waiting?"

"Thank you for that lie. I appreciate it. Really, I do." Dante said, laughing. He knew he sang like a drunken chicken, but it was nice of her to compliment him. He watched her as she leaned in to blow out her candle, the faint orange light that made her glow before now gone. Now, theyw were both bathed again with the blush light casted by the moon, a cold breeze passing them, stirring his hair.

"You're welcome." At her question, Dante shrugged. "It doesn't matter. What matters is you're touched by my surprise. That's all I need..." A teasing smile.

Ashley had been half joking, but she truly appreciated the fact that he had sung for her, even coming to see her for her birthday. And so she just smiled, her hand lifting to run through her hair. "Well I appreciate this," she replied, genuinely, not bothering to be sarcastic or tease him. They had just come from being in some sort of a fight, if she could count it as an actual fight, and hadn't spoken for awhile. She hadn't realized it, but Ashley had really missed Dante. And she wasn't sure what he was doing there, or if Roger knew he was there, but she appreciated it more than anything.

Biting her lip, Ashley looked away, the smile still in her eyes. "I am," she replied with a nod, "thank you." Turning back to him, she shifted slightly. "Do you want to come inside?"

The absence of sarcasm was rare between them, though when it does happen it was always a breath of fresh air. "I know you do." he said, smiling, even though he felt good being able to do something for her, after all they've had to go through in the past month. It was a way for him to make it up to her, in his mind, a sort of apology for leaving her in the party when he should have stayed and consoled her...

At her invitation, Dante sighed. so tempting it was to simply agree and go up to her house. But after everything that happened, he was surprised at his own thoughts. "It's probably best that I don't." he said, his expression apologetic. "You know... Roger. We just patched things up and... I'm scared to ruin that again." He could feel her pull, so strong and inviting. Merlin, after everything, it was still there. "But please don't take this the wrong way. I'm not worried about your control; I'm worried about mine..."

She hadn't exactly expected him to say yes, but she also hadn't expected him to say no. She wasn't even sure what she had been inviting him upstairs for was anything but friendly, for him to get out of the cold, but they both knew what was going to go on. The attraction between them was undeniable. It had been there before, and it obviously hadn't been left. But there was a big damper on the relationship after the fight with Dante and her brother. And she hadn't exactly realized it until he mentioned it.

The disappointment on her face was obvious, though she tried to hide it. "Oh," was her simple reply, as she looked away. She wanted to be mad at him, and she almost was, but at the same time she knew she couldn't. There was no use in it, in the first place, they hadjust gotten over a fight. But she also knew it was a bad idea. He had just patched things up with Roger, who was she to ruin that again? "I know, I know," she replied, brushing her hair from her face, though she still wouldn't look at him. "I just meant because..you came here, and it's cold..I figured you would at least want to warm up before you walked back.." And it was her birthday. She wanted to be with him, was that too much to ask?

Although Dante Macmillan mostly repelled any female's advances on his conscience, he realized he couldn't simply walk away from Ashley. They had gone through a lot more than the temporary flings he's had in his time. Plus, it was her birthday! He was a bastard, yes, but he wasn't heartless!

"I am here." Dante reminded her, wanting to make her less angry. After putting the cake on the bench and covering it with its lid, he pocketed his cold hands and sighed, taking steps towards her until he was right in front of her. The heat emanating from her was a delicious relief from the cold. He wanted to move closer, but couldn't bring himself to. "I am warm." he told her, smiling down at her. "And it has everything to do with you..."

"I know you are, Dante," she replied, looking at him. He was standing there in front of her, making it completely impossible for her to pretend that the attraction wasn't there. Oh, it was there. It was absolutely there, but half of Ashley was telling her not to do it. And Dante had already made it clear that he was restraining himself.

Sighing as he told her he was warm because of her, she shook her head. "Don't do that to me, Dante," she whispered softly, looking at the ground. He was making it hard for her. She wanted to just take the cake and walk away, but something was holding her there. "Nothing has changed since the last time. Only the fact that Roger got angry." She shook her head again. She wanted him, she was drawn to him, but she was torn. "I know we shouldn't, but.." She paused. "I can't stop."

Dante could only sigh in response. He kept his hands in his pockets for this every reason, for him to stop himself from giving into his impulses. He wanted to hold her face in his hands and assure her everything was alright, despite what had happened during his birthday. But he knew at the same time that things were no longer the same. He coulnd't lie to her.

"Would it help it I left?" Dante asked, serious about his question. "I will if it will make things easier for you."

Ashley just sighed, shaking her head. "No, it wouldn't make things easier, Dante," she replied softly. That was the last thing she wanted. Of course, it would make things easier in the bigger picture. But that wasn't the question he had asked. It wouldn't make things easier, it would only make it harder. Because she would spend the night upset, wondering why she had let him leave and never getting him off of her mind. "I don't want you to leave," she finally admitted, looking down at the ground once again, her arms crossed against her chest.

Dante smiled a sad smile, feeling her confusion match his own. He truly didn't want to leave, but after the events of New Year, there were certain bounderies he didn't wish to cross now out of respect for his mate. Her brother, Roger. "Would you mind sitting in the freezing cold with me then?" he asked, taking he spot back on the back. He crossed his legs and draped an arm over the back of the long seat, but his posture suggested that he was not intending to sit too close. "It's the only choice I think we have. I can stay for a bot longer, maybe watch the sky for a bit..." An encouraging smile. "What do you say?"

As much as Ashley wanted to be rebellious and tell Dante to grow up and stop worrying about Roger, she couldn't. Normally Ash would be spouting off about the situation, doing whatever she wanted, but she knew he was right. She didn't want her brother and his ebst friend to fight again because of her. It was just still...it hurt. And it frustrated her, and it made her sad. Roger hadn't even spoken to her all day, and it was her birthday. Dante was there, but he couldn't come inside. She felt rotten in the entire situation, and she felt lost. "Fine," she replied softly, her voice hoarse. She sat down, but not close to him, and kept both her feet on the ground. She didn't look at him, but just looked up at the sky. Some birthday, she wanted to say, but she didn't.

Dante had a veyr strong urge to throw everything up in the air and do what he flet liek doing. It was always the way he did things after all. But... he couldn't. now, there existed a but in his life strong enough to actually stop him fromt doing what he wanted. It mostly because that but was a really good friend, his best friend and he would never do anything to destroy what they have. He was just sad that he had to stay away from the but's great older sister int he process...

"You don't seem happy." Dante said as he watched her take a seat. "Didn't you hear me sing? I sang Happy Birthday! If I wanted you to be miserable in my presence, I should have tweaked the lyrics a little bit..." Was it the right time for a joke? The air was about to suffocate him, and she looked very sad. Yes, it probably was time for a joke. If he needed to resort to juggling or anything in that nature, he would. He just couldnt' stand making her unhappy...

It took everything in her not to just say fuck it and kiss him. Or move closer to him at least, it was cold afterall. But she didn't. She didnt want to get him angry, or Roger, she didn't want to cause problems again. But she just...she wanted to be happy. And she just wasn't.

"Because I'm not happy," she responded, quietly, looking ahead. Her lips only quirked slightly in a smile as he joked, but not much. Her eyes didn't show it. They were both miserable and they knew it. She really wanted to throw it all out the window but..she just couldn't. She already felt awful enough for last time. But she was still torn. Turning her head to look at him, she gave him a sad smile before sighing, turning her head away. Why was he there if he knew he shouldn't be? That had to mean something..

Dante saw the answer coming, but it didn't make things any easier for him when he actually heard her. She foreced a little laugh at his joke for his sake, he was sure, so as not to bruise his little ego. Bless her. "I'm sorry if I make you unhappy." he said simply, resting his hands in his pockets and looking up into the night sky. It was a magnificent dark blue, dusted with white and gold stars, beautiful in contrast to how possitively crappy he was feeling for causing Ashley greif. That wasn't what he intended when he came here at all! "What can I do?"

Letting out a heavy sigh, Ashley shook her head. "You don't make me unhappy," she admitted, turning her head to the side to look at him. Of course he didn't make her un happy. It wasn't him. It wasn't his choice to not be with her or to not come upstairs; they had no choice. It was the situation, she should have never..fallen for her brothers best friend. Or whatever this was. There wasn't just a physical attraction there, there was something more, something Ashley wasn't entirely sure of but she couldn't even explore it. Shaking her head again, she stood up, brushing her cold hands over her jeans. "You can't do anything, Dante," she said, turning towards him. "You've already said that." It wasn't that there was nothing he could do to make her happy, but there was, it was just what he couldn't. They already had made it clear. They shouldn't. "It's not your fault." Shifting, she looked away from him, down towards the castle, and then back to him. "You're probably cold, you should go."
