WHO. Adam & Evan Pucey, eventually Jessica Vaisey
WHAT. A chance encounter
WHERE. Outside an elite party.
WHEN. Night time
RATING. Probably high for language.
STATUS. Incomplete / Closed

It was a chilly January night. The breeze outside was crisp and cool, staining one Adam Pucey's cheeks pink as the boy made his way from an apparition point, towards a majestic house that stood proud and tall atop a hill not too far from where he was. He slumped back against the tall tree overlooking the land and ran a cold hand over his face, his position affording him a view of the grounds of what appeared to be an elite function. People were apparating in on one side, he house lit brightly from the inside. It almost appeared like a scene from a dream...

Adam fished a cigarette from his pocket and lit it with his wand. He wore a simple polo shit and dark jeans combo, a cloak shrugged on and boots covering his feet- certainly not the attire one would choose for the events that were to transpire within the great house. He took a drag an exhaled deeply. His hands were shaking, he noted candidly for he hadn't quite noticed before. In his pocket was an invitation to the said event, but he knew it was perhaps a mistake that he was sent one, for it was addressed to the Pucey family as a whole. In the past years, he's attended these funtions. Mingled with the right people, made business arrangements with some. It was hs job for the past few years of his life. But now, he was forcefully relieved of those duties because... of the path he'd chosen to take. Surely, he would be unwelcomed if he showed his face.

Still, he was there. Why? Perhaps a part of him wanted to see his family, wanted to see that they were alright despite his absence. He had done the very same during New Year's, where he stood outside his family's home until it was mere minutes until midnight, just wanting to see them, but afraid to be seen by them. After, he retreated back to his home, where Wesly had patiently waited for him. Now, his eyes looked at the fingers holding up his fag, a ring gleaming in one of his fingers. He couldn't help but smile a little at the thought of his Westly. It gave him comfort to kow he'll be waiting for him when this was over...

Somehow Evan managed to make it back to the manor. Once Adam was safely gone, he allowed himself to reach for his chest, clutching through the fabric of his jacket. He realized in that instant he wanted it off. All of it, and as soon as he made it through the doors, he made a beeline for one of the rooms he knew would be abandoned, gasping for air as he yanked off first his coat, then his suit jacket, and finally ripped off his tie, before unbuttoning the first few buttons of his shirt. He sat down on the edge of the bed, dipping his head between his knees to steady his breathing.

It was then that he saw the shoes, dainty feet facing towards him, and Evan nearly groaned aloud as his mind raced to come up with some sort of explanation for his state, for something to say to the woman (unless it was someone with very feminine tastes… and legs) who he had not only just walked in on but had obviously made quite the scene in front of.

But there was nothing. What could he possibly say? ‘Oh, I just went for a run and got a bit warm’? For someone who had spent his entire life making up excuses and lies, he was suddenly quite blank, and the only thing that he could will to come out of his mouth- and even that was not in the calm and collected tone he wanted it to be- was, “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize there was anyone else in here.” Slowly, he lifted his head to see who he was facing, praying that it was some of the hired help.

No such luck. He’d known those legs looked familiar, and his struggled to keep the horror out of his expression as he came face to face with Jessica Vaisey.

As always, Jessica Vaisey could not be found. Her mother had given up on her two minute search on her daughter and continued to mingle with the Wizarding World's elite, with only a short mental note of looking for her after the affair.

Where was she? In hiding, of course. Jessica, dressed in another one of her mother's designer dresses was in one of the many rooms that filled the house. Her hair has already out of its bun, falling in uneven curls down her shoulders. She was in the process of drying her face from having recently washed all the make up her mother had put on her earlier that day in the loo, using a towel she'd found one one of the shelves. Usually, she had a partner in crime for these functions, though she guessed that time has passed now...

After, she headed back inside the room and closed the lights in the bath. It was during that time that she'd heard the noise coming from the door. She stood still in horror, thinking for a second that it could be her mother looking for her. But once the door finally opened, she stood frozen as Evan entered the room in haste and started ripping his clothes off as if they were choking him, preventing him from breathing right. Then he collapsed on the bed, leaning forward to rest his face on his knees. She's seen him do that before. She wondered what had left him so upset...

Her feet were like boulders as she tried to approach him, barely making a sound. She ached to run forward to hold him to her, and ask him what was wrong, but because of their recent history, Jessica couldn't get herself to do them. So ste stopped a foot from where he was, waiting for the time he'd notice her and ask her to go away. But when his eyes rose to her, she felt her heart fall in the look of sadness in them. "What happened to you?" she asked, moving to stand in front of him and frame his face with her hands. His cheeks were cold. "Where did you go?"

Oh God, the piteous look on her face was mortifying, and Evan had half a mind to go with the 'went for a run' excuse after all, before her hands found his face. They were warm, soft, and gentle, a perfect representation of the girl before him.

The dampness of the bottom of his pants a clear indication of the snow he had wandered out into, but Evan didn't give her an answer. He knew he needed to pull himself together, to come up with something to ease Jessica's worry, but it wasn't coming easy. After the finality of he and his brother's words, he was having trouble thinking of much of anything aside from the hurt look on his brother's Adam's face. He grimaced slightly at the thought, feeling another stab at his chest.

And then, in a rare moment of what Evan would inevitably claim to be pure idiocy, his arms snaked around her middle, gently pulling her close as he ducked his head into her stomach and breathed in her familiar scent. He knew things were different. He knew Jessica and he had problems and that he was supposed to be being careful with her, but it was all too easy to slip into old habits, into a crutch that he knew he had no right to hold on to.

Something must have happened, something big. Though Jessica knew Evan as one who at times allows his temper to get the best of him, she also knew that Evan was strong-willed. When he set his mind into something, he doesn't falter easily. He would bear whatever it was, even if it would hurt him. But seeing him now, with his expression betraying the struggle he seemed to want to hide from her, it was obvious that something had gone terribly wrong.

It broke her. The urge to wrap her arms around her was strong, but she merely kept to the distance she had made for them, rememberng her place. She was surprised then when he pulled her towards him, wrapping his strong arms around her waist and held onto her tightly. Her arms lifted as if on instinct as he gazed down at his light blonde head that he's gently laid against her stomach. For a moment, she didn't know what to do...

So she did what felt right to her. With much care she laid her hands on the base of his neck, holding him against her protectively, before she combed her fingers through his hair. It hurt her to see him like this. "Do you want to talk about it?" her voice was faint when she spoke, almost as if she was afraid to speak at all.

It felt nice, her hands in his hair. There was something soothing about it, and he could have sat there all day without moving a muscle and been content. She helped to warm the cold of his cheeks and fingers, feeling the blood begin moving in his extremities again. It left a pleasant tingly feeling, and Evan couldn't help but find that appropriate for Jessica.

He could feel himself relaxing, his breathing slowing, and he was ready to lift his head when she asked him if he wanted to talk about it. His arms tensed slightly around her. He didn't want to talk about. In fact, he didn't want to think about it. He had just sent his brother away for good. He had no brother now. Adam Pucey was nothing to him anymore, and Adam had said himself he was no longer his brother. "No," he muttered gruffly, not raising his head.

Their closeness was a guilty pleasure, for despite how much Jessica told himself she shouldn't allow herself to completely give in, it was too hard. He needed her, and she could never deny him anything, especially not her company when he needed it. And though she knew remembering this would only bring her much pain later on after they'd return to the way things have been between them, Jessica only found herself drawing him closer...

Even before Evan had uttered his answer, Jessica already knew it from the way he reacted to her question immediately, a sudden tensing of his arms around her, perhaps even a slight shift in his breathing. She sighed, bowing her head to look at the top of his head, her long dark hair cascading down her shoulders and creating a curtain around them both. "That's fine. But you know, if you don't, the burden will only get heavier with time..." she said, though not condescendingly, then swallowed. "Do you want me to leave you alone?"

"Not this time," he told her, finally daring to withdraw his head from the safety of her stomach. "I'll never see him again." He was speaking of Adam, of course, and he assumed she would understand that much. He was, after all, the main source of all of Evan's frustrations. "He's gone, and I'm done." As he spoke, it was apparent that the old Evan was slowly creeping back, his brief moment of vulnerability over as soon as it had begun. His walls were being rebuilt, sturdy and strong as ever.

Slowly, he unwound his arms from about her, offering an almost sheepish smile as he reached for his tie. "No, don't go."

It wasn't difficult to know who she was talking about. Lately, Adam was mostly the reason why Evan lost control of his temper. Jessica's eyes moved to the closed door of their dark room, her brows drawn together in thought. Was he the one he saw outside?

When Evan spoke of his brother with such finality it started to worry her. Though she knew his brother would never truly be gone, perhaps their recent argument had led them to declare they should part ways completely. Jess wished she could do something, anything to make him feel better. But she didn't have that power. All she could do was be here for him now...

When she watched the change in his expression as he released her, her own arms falling to her sides. Jessica's lips declined in the slightest in the corners, disappointed that he thought he should be guarded around her again. But it was a relief to hear that she didn't want her to go at least. "Then I'll stay." he told him. "I'll stay as long as you want me to. Carefully, he took his tie in her hands and started to tie it for him, and after, fixing the buttons of his shirt.

A slight smile grazed her lips. "I remember I used to do this for you after every party before..." she chanced a look at him when she was done, smoothening her hands over his chest before retreating them. "You know, I learned how to do this because of you. I had to ask my dad how to do it. I didn't want you getting into trouble with your parents..."

Evan was caught off guard as she took his tie from him, fixing it herself. He remembered, before she even began speaking of it, the many times she had done it for him, before she'd actually learned how because he was too young to be bothered to figure it out himself. She had always been saving him somehow, it seemed.

"You kept me sane, you know," he said with a small smile, snatching up her hands before they could fall too far from his chest. He held them easily and comfortably in his much larger ones. "Sneaking off in the midst of all those fancy parties. I'm amazed we never got caught." His smile faded slightly. "But I suppose no one was really looking for us back then." He knew he would have to head back to the party soon. He had been gone too long already, and people would begin to talk.

With a soft sigh, he released her hands and rose up to his feet. "I have to go back. My mother will be upset if I'm gone any longer." He brushed a sweep of her hair aside to press a gentle kiss to her cheek as he scooped up his jacket. "You look beautiful, Jess. I'll see you at school."
