WHO; Jessica Vaisey and Evan Pucey
WHAT; Frustrations.
WHEN; Night time
WHERE; The Slytherin Commons
RATING; TBA
STATUS; Incomplete / Closed.

The night was chillier that Jessica had ever remembered it had been. She wondered if the heating charms in the castle were just failing, or it was just the absence of company that's making her feel the cold. She was heading back from the library, having finished a paper for a class the next day. It had taken her much longer than usual, for her thoughts seemed preoccupied with a young man with blonde hair. Evan had been in a constant in her thoughts since she had last spoken to him over the journals; he sounded so miserable and broken that it broke her heart. Jessie wanted to comfort him, and tell him everything was going to be okay, but it seemed the other wouldn't believe her no matter what she said...

With a sigh, she said the password for the Common Room entrance and went silently inside, planning to go directly to her room when a familiar figure caught her eyes on the way to the staircases. "Evan?" she called out and approached him cautiously.

Evan was at the bottom of the stairs leading to the boys' dormitories. He leaned against the cold stone walls for support, his hair and clothing slightly mussed, eyes drooping slightly. He had given up on ascending the stairs before he'd even really started, and there he sat, a bottle mostly emptied of its firewhiskey waiting to be finished off upstairs.

"Jessicaaa." He offered his friend a lopsided grin, looking at her but not lifting his head from its position against the wall. "Hello, love, have you come to..." He was distracted as a girl descended the stairs from the girls dorms, staring after her. He even went so far as to peer around Jessica until she sat down. He finally dragged his gaze back to her. "Hello."

It was apparent in his slurry speech and the bottle that he held loosely on his side with his fingers that he was more than just a bit intoxicated. Jessica's lips declined in a frown as he apprached him, even more so when she saw the heavy unfocused gazed as they stared at her first before they were caught by someone behind her. Without a word, she apprached him and kneeled on the spot before him, small hands reaching up to fix his disheveled clothing, smoothening out his collar and fixing his tie in an almost sisterly fashion. "Hi." she told him when he greeted her, hands circling around the alcohol bottle and tugging gently, hoping that he wouldn't protest. "Do you want to go upstairs?" Jessie offered, looking at him with wide concerned eyes. Perhaps the situation was a lot worse than she thought...

"Nahhh," he slurred, flailing his hand a bit in what was no doubt supposed to be a dismissive gesture. "Nothing exciting up there, Jess." When she attempted to take the bottle from him, his brows furrowed and his grip tightened on it. As his one source of relief for thoughts of his no longer existent brother, he wasn't ready to let it go. "What're you doing?" he asked, frowning as he jerked the bottle back. "S'mine. You don't drink anyway."

Jessica's brows brows lifted at his defensiveness, then a sigh left her parted lips at having to let him take the bottle back. "Don't you think you've had enough? You can hardly keep yourself erect." she pointed out in her small voice. Seeing the scene before her left him weak... sad. Silently, she took the space beside him on the staircase and hooked his arms around her shoulders. "How about just moving from the staircase?" she offered, gesturing towards one of the plush couches scattered about the dark Common Room. "Maybe there, by the fire?"

Evan let out a burst of immature laughter at the word 'erect', his arms stretching out to tug Jessica into his lap. "I can assure you, love, I have no problem keeping myself erect." His arms fastened securely about her waist. "But you wouldn't know about that. Because you're a nice girl." Evan had never thought twice about shagging Jessica. They'd been friends for so long, and he'd feel like he was tainting her innocence.

Jessica's eyes grew wide in mild panic when she was suddenly pulled into Evan's lap, warmth spreading through her cheeks, down her neck to her collarbone. He held her tight and fast, but because their new positions had left her stunned, she didn't move. She just looked at him as he spoke, her gaze particularly caught by the way his lips moved when he spoke.

Nice girl. Yes, perhaps people do consider her as such. It was perhaps her soft-spoken nature and her seemingly fragile appearance that led others to think of her that way, even Adam. She knew she wasn't quite like what they thought. Wordlessly, she took his bottle and took a small swig. Her face registered her distaste, having not been used to the taste of liquor at all or developed a particular liking to it, before she cradled the bottle on her lap. "Why are you drinking?" she said, though she couldn't quite meet his gaze.

Evan let out another peal of laughter as she took a drink. "Look at you! Proving me wrong!" That didn't change the fact that, even in his rather inebriated state, Evan would never consider taking advantage of Jessica Vaisey. She was, perhaps, the one girl Evan would hate himself for shagging.

His mood dampened, however, as she asked why he was drinking. His arms uncoiled from about her waist, hanging loosely at his sides. "You know why."

Jessica tried to what feeling of hurt that had happened in her chest when she felt his hands loosened around her, and kept her gaze on her lap. It was true she did know. It made her feel so helpless being in a position where she couldn't do a thing even when she was willing to just anything to not have to see Evan in this state. "You don't have to do this you know..." she whispered, placing the bottle on the floor by is feet. "This is not healthy for you, Evan. I know your sad, but... you don't have to throw everything else away." She turned to him, her face void of the emotions that were tearing at her chest. "How many classes have you attended in the past three days?"

Evan frowned at her. "Adam throws things away. Adam threw everything away. Threw his title away, his family away, me away," he rambled. "Adam throws everything away except his stupid butt buddy." He was surprisingly gentle as he moved her off of his lap. "Because Westly is worth more than everything," he said loudly, earning the attention of a few people in the common room. "Westly fucking Nott who's probably upstairs wanking at the thought of him." He swayed a bit as he reached for the banister.

The careful way he handled her when he moved her off his lap did not go unnoticed. She realized that even in his intoxicated state, Evan's concern for her continued to show. She was surprised, almost scared at his ever-changing tone, from a hushed whisper to a loud voice that drew the attention of those who scattered about the Commons. Instinctively, her fingers reached up to cover his lips. "Shh..." she said gently. After a sigh, she released his lips then stood immediately when he reached for the banister. Careful hands held him, supported him, then held his face. She saw much anger in them, but more than that, she saw hurt. "Evan. Stop this. Please. You don't need to do this..." she took his face in her hands and looked deep into his eyes. This wasn't the Evan she knew and this worried her more than she would ever express. "Come back..."

Evan tugged her hands off of his face. "I'm not the one who left," he answered bitterly, turning and eyeing the stairs warily, before starting up them, glad for the support of the banister as he made his way up. "Westly!" he shouted, still climbing. "Westly fucking Nott, I want to talk to you, you tosser! WESTLY!"

Jessica's eyes widened in panic when Evan started calling out to Westly Nott in the staircase that led to the dormitories. His voice bounced against the walls, echoing up to the rooms and even in the Commons. It hurt that he rejected her touch when she was trying to calm him down. But she couldn't give up on him so easily. She couldn't. Her hands, easily smaller than his held him tighter and she pulled him out of the stairs with all her strength. "Evan, stop it. Just... stop it." she said, for the firsttime her voice reflecting her frustration, her sadness. "You may like seeing yourself like this but I don't. I want to help you, but... it seems that you don't want my help." Her eyes bore to his. "I can't even see you in your eyes anymore..." Her hand fell away from his, despite how much it hurt her.

Evan was about to shout for his brother's lover again when he felt Jessica's hands upon him again, dragging him back down to erase what progress he'd made going up the stairs. She was looking at him again, and even his fuzzy mind could pick up on the fact that she was upset, though it couldn't quite process why. "You don't make sense," he told her, returning to his earlier position as he slid down the wall to lean against it at the bottom of the stairs. "Why're you on his side?" he grumbled from his position on the floor. "Why does everyone feel so bad for him? He did this. He did this to us."

Jessica made a sound of indignation when Evan had accused her of being on Westly's side and not his. Her features were slightly constricted, a look that said that she wanted to cry even though she couldn't. She hasn't shed a tear for years, and even though she felt like she should now, she couldn't. But her voice, even in her frustration, was still as soft as it had always been when she spoke.

After a calming breath, she sank to her knees in front of him. "I'm not on his side." she told him. "Could you stop getting mad at everyone?... At me?" she added hesitantly. how can she be thinking of herself at a time like this? "You're not getting anywhere with your shouting, or drinking. So what's the point of doing it at all?"

"And what would you suggest?" he drawled. "Maybe I should run off and fall in love?" He snorted. "Oh- better yet, with a Mudblood!" He let out a bitter laugh. "Oh, and one that hates my parents, that's always a winner. Maybe one who hates her parents, too! And we can move in with Westly and Adam, and we can be one big homosexual, responsibility-ditching, happy fucking family!"

Jess' head was bowed when he spoke. Every hurtful, sarcastic word that entered her ears was a blow to her heart. She waited until he was done, knowing that when she would try to stop him, he probably wouldn't hear her. "You don't hate Adam." she said, believing it with all that she has. "You're just hurt because you want him to take back what he's said and tell you he's not going to get disowned you..." She took his hands in hers, and carefully propped them on his lap. "He's still there though, isn't he? With the same face, the same person. I don't think he will EVER leave you. He will just be a little farther than he usually was, but stil never out of reach." Thumbs drew circles over his knuckles, hoping to calm him. "You don't have to make this so hard, Evan. I... I can no longer simply watch you sink and do nothing..."

"No," he said bluntly, trashing her thoughtful spiel with one bitter word. "He's not the same. He would've never done this. He used to care about our family name. He used to care about making our father proud. He used to take care of things." Evan had always looked up to Adam more than was likely healthy, probably because Evan himself had always fought so hard to earn his father's approval that Adam seemed to earn so naturally... until now.

"And-" He let out a weak laugh. "Adam... wouldn't have been to big of a coward to tell me to my face. In a sodding letter. Fucking Merlin's beard."

Jess was taken aback by his harsh tone, and his sharp stare. Hurt, she looked down as he spoke, careful to hide the fact that she was trying to hold herlsef together before she looked up at him again. "I don't know what else to say..." she admitted. "Right now it seemshe could not do anything to remedy what has already been committed. I just think that though you can't turn back time... you can still set things right. Drinking and getting wasted doesn't accomplish that. You're... running away from something." A pause as a thoughtful expression crossed her features. "What are you afraid of?"

Evan stared at her. “Because that’s what us Pucey’s do, right, Jessica? We run away?” A sober Evan wouldn’t have talked to Jessica the way he had been that evening, but Evan wasn’t sober, and he wasn’t happy, and he didn’t give a flying flip about how anyone felt or what anyone thought of him. “I’m not fucking running. I have to do what my brother was supposed to. I’ll be the one everyone’s looking to now. I’ll go to all the stupid fucking parties and be on best behavior, dance with all the eligible pureblood women, tell the fucking old hags how lovely they look in their stupid dresses. I’ll take over Dad’s business and run it- so what if he has to cram 17 years worth of knowledge and connections into two years? I’ll become head of household, fix everything for everyone, and I won’t fucking run away like my brother did.” He hung his head, letting his eyes close. “Dad put everything into him, you know. Adamson Pucey, the golden boy. Ha!”

It was becoming quit an effort to stay calm despite every word van lashed out at him. But Jessica told herself he was under the influence, that he would never hurt her if the circumstances were different. She didn't know for sure, but if she didn't cling to what faith she had in him, she had nothing.

She watched him hang his head and close his eyes. "You're afraid you're not going to please your father the way your brother did. You're afraid you won't live up to what your father is expecting." she stated, trying her best to understand what he was feeling. "You're afraid of being judged from how you perform a task that wasn't yours to begin with..." Gently, she lifted his face so she could look at him. "You're too young for this sort of burnen. Much too young..." she said, before her lips rose in the corners into an encouraging small smile. "But you're not alone in this. You have Anna, and Peyton. And though I don't know if this means anything at all, but you have me. I believe in you, and I know I'm not making a mistake with thinking that..."

"Can I go to bed now?" he asked gruffly.

Evan was stubborn enough sober, let alone when he had alcohol in his system. He wasn't about to admit that Jessica was right, but he was running out of steam to fight with her. He was running out excuses and snappy comebacks. Bed seemed like a much easier option. It was getting to be late anyway.

It was another blow to have been dismissd so quickly, her sincere words thrown back at her without remorse. But jessica knew that whatever he did, she could not hold it against him. It was a holds he had on her that she knew would not ever change.

With a gentle nod, Jessica released him and carefully stood. "Do you need help?" she asked, managing a small smile as she did so.

"No." Probably, actually, but again, he was being stubborn, and that was unlikely to change until tomorrow when his stubbornness came back to bite him in the form of a very, very painful hangover. "I can do it." He heaved himself up, swaying a bit, before slowly starting up the stairs. Halfway up, though, he paused to look over his shoulder. "Night, Jess."
