Who: Jareth and everyone!
When: Day Four, evening
What: The King 'invites' everyone to his masque...
Where: Jareth's castle
Rating: Anywhere from G to R, I suppose
Status: Complete

It had been raining earlier in the day, but it had cleared up a short time ago. Jareth looked out the window of his massive ballroom, empty for now, and felt a little bit disoriented by the fact that the Labyrinth had just disappeared. Of course, he'd made it happen, but it had been a long time since he'd felt so exposed. But he couldn't very well have people needing to wander through the Labyrinth, could he? And the two who had been running it had been transported to the castle already, and he knew from the screams of rage that they were being dressed at this very moment.

The king smiled and turned away from the window, checking out his ballroom. It was quite spectacular, with a large orchestra pit, many snack tables, and, of course, lots of empty space for dancing. This, he figured, would be a night to remember. He snapped his fingers and peered into the crystal that appeared there, scrying on each and every person he'd brought to the Underground. Some, he knew wouldn't come on their own, and he sent crystals floating out to ensare them. Of course, some might just be strong enough to resist that pull, so he had goblins standing by to bring others in. Whether willing or not, everyone would be attending, he'd seen to that.

Dressed in his finery, with an evil looking mask in the guise of a leering demon, he walked over to his throne. Draping himself casually over it, he waited. People would be arriving anytime, now. He didn't fool himself for a moment that some wouldn't take this chance to attack him, which was why he wasn't precisely there. Anyone who tried to attack him, he knew, would find their useless effort wasted against what was no more than a projected image.

He gestured, and a goblin slave brought him a glass of wine. This, he was convinced, was going to be a night to remember.

But that could be done in an afternoon at the dentist. Juniper was from London, you saw all kinds there. So really, she still didn't believe him, even though him being human was busting apart her invisibility theory.

Then I'll forgive the error, she smirked in return, shaking her head a bit.

"And you, Armand," Juniper returned, and then pursed her lips. "Or is it Amadeo? Or Andrei?" she asked. "But nevermind that. Would you please explain how you can see me? Normally I'm not corporeal during my visions. And normally I don't end up in a place with goblins and Lord knows what else," she said, gesturing around to the varied people and, well, she wasn't sure, that littered the dance floor. "When did all the laws go to the wayside?"

Oh, this was fun. It just kept getting more fun, actually. Her disbelief was something else. The only other person he'd met here had been Schuldig, who had had first hand experience of Armand's nature. Well, he could give that to her. He could definitely do that. In fact, the more he thought about it, the more he liked the idea.

Come with me, dear one. Come with me and I'll show you... His mental voice took on a tone of entreating command. Immediately, he saw that she would provide resistance, and he smiled. This was getting more interesting by the second.

He backed away a step, and increased the mental push of his will into her mind. Armand, Andrei, Amadeo, you know these things you should not. I had those closed. But in the blood vision, you will tell me what you know... He would bite her. He would bite her and then find out how she knew these things that should have been safely behind impressive mental barriers in his mind.

Come to me... More intensity, more power. He hadn't had to work this hard in a long time. His angelic face was nearly blank, but the concentration was clear to someone who was paying attention. But he was focused completely on her, and on making her do what he wanted.

Juniper laughed out loud at the first invitation. "Nice try, buddy," she said cockily, putting a hand on her hip and taking her mask off, tossing it on a nearby table. It was scratchy, and her teal eyes definitely didn't need the emphasis. They did that all on their own. Now unhindered, her hair fell around her face, bright red and curly, making her head look like it was on fire. Which was generally fairly impressive, at least, when she was pissed. Right now? She was just amused that he thought she was that easy.

She considered just up and telling him that she knew he was full of it, and exactly how, but really, this mental war was fun, and definitely a good exercise for her. Since this was all some sort of backward vision anyway, and wasn't going to hurt her.

His second try had Juniper's body moving a step forward, while her mind revolted, causing her to topple and have to catch herself on the back of a chair. Bugger me, she thought to herself. This was going to be bad. Just a vision. Just a vision... And she couldn't be hurt in those. So she gave in, her body happily going to his side while her mind still tried to get her to hang back.

The taunting might have gotten her killed under normal circumstances. On the other hand, perhaps not. Like most vampires, novelty intruiged him, and no one had resisted a mental command for his for a long time. She was amused... he could hope for anger. Anger always made it more easy to control someone, in his opinion. Once someone lost their temper, he'd won.

But he could sense her weakening, and slipped his own mask up onto his forehead to keep it out of the way. Intense eyes found hers and locked there, and the vampire moved back one more step. He was getting close to a statue, he realized, and figured he would do his best to lure her back there. It was a bit stereotypical. Go to a party, find a pretty girl, and lure her into a private corner to feed on her. This didn't displease him, however.

He stepped into the shadows behind the statue, a slight smile on his lips. Come here, beautiful girl, I can give you such pleasure, don't you know that? More and more compelling, he kept his gaze locked with hers, refusing to look away.

Something was very, very wrong. Though Juniper didn't want to believe it, maybe this guy was telling the truth. Maybe he was a vampire. Because she was sure that no normal human could have this kind of control. Not one that looked as young, if not younger than herself. She'd been dabbling since before she could talk. No one had more experience than she did. And no one's voice had ever sounded so seductive, at least, out loud. This whole him being in her brain was far too new for her liking. Even Dylan hadn't gotten this close.

She was following him into the shadows now, something far stronger than herself controlling her movements, and Juniper's breath sped up, causing her chest to heave, fear starting to whittle away at the need that she wasn't entirely sure was hers. She clung to that, tried to use it to pull out of what was happening, to return to her body back safe in London, but for the first time, she couldn't pull out.

That was when she realised, she wasn't in a vision. This was real, and she was now trapped. And she couldn't even panic properly.

Armand had her. He knew the moment it happened, and he looked a bit like a child on christmas eve. She was very pretty, after all, and spirited, too. Most women, he didn't have a lot of use for. They were decorative, but he was coming from a world of five centuries ago when women had been more more marginalized. He had little experience with the empowered woman, and he was enjoying it.

No, my dear one, you can't leave. The King won't let you, but right now, neither will I. He smiled at her sweetly, and reached out his arms for her. Come to me, please. I'm cold, and you can warm me up. Into her mind he projected an image, not finding it nearly as much of a struggle now, though she still had natural resistance he had to push past.

So beautiful... Idly, he wondered if her hair was as soft as it looked. Come touch me, wrap your arms around me, hold me and I'll hold you.

And he had her, hook, line and sinker. Really, what did it was the begging. He was so like a child, needing to be held, and it tugged at the part of her that Juniper had always avoided. The fatherless waif part that wondered occasionally at what it would be like to have had one. Maybe he was as uncertain as she.

Stepping forward, completely out of sight and into the shadows, Juniper raised her hand and ran the tips of her fingers along his cheek. You are cold, she thought, not having to make an effort at all to get herself heard now. It had been so long since she'd practiced, but it had come back like riding a bike.

Closing the distance between them, Juniper ran her hand from his cheek, down his neck, and then around his shoulders, pulling him into her arms, just where, apparently, he wanted to be. She closed her eyes and let out a sigh, marveling at the difference in their body temperatures, which was all her brain was really allowing her to understand at that point. Then she pulled back, just slightly, to look at him again. Better? she asked, her fingers curling in the hair at the nape of his neck.

It was fairly dark behind this statue, with no one to see as she wrapped her arms around him. She smelled like life, like blood, and she felt so warm. Even after his trip into the sun which had left him darkened, he was much colder than she was, and having her body close to his was rather like curling himself around a nice, warm fire.

Slowly, he raised his hand and let it run through the smooth silken strands of her fiery hair. Gently, he pushed it back, exposing the pale skin beneath to his touch. His chilly fingers ran along the soft surface, marveling in how it felt.

Don't be afraid... Armand was unusual, in a way, among vampires. He liked his victims to feel good, to enjoy what he was doing. He wasn't sure why, other than that Marius had wanted him to do it that way, and it was an old habit. He shifted, his lips drawing back from his cruel little teeth, exposing them. He realized that she was shorter than him, which meant he didn't even have to stretch. Convienant. His teeth found the right spot, pressed down, and at the same time as her blood entered his mouth, he began broadcasting feelings of extreme pleasure to her.

Juniper wanted him to keep touching her, sending shivers along her skin, and she didn't know where that need was coming from. Perhaps it was Armand, or whatever his name was, and perhaps, given that she was internally comparing his gentle touch to Kingsley's not gentle one, it was just herself.

I'm not, she found herself answering, and Juniper realised that it was true. She'd done a lot of things in her admittedly short life, but this was one for the record books. And if it killed her? At least she wasn't going down by fire. That was a comfort.

Oh, wait a second, yes she was. At least, that's what it felt like, after the brief bit of pain from her skin breaking subsided. Her hands clenched on his shoulders, hanging on for dear life, simultaneously wishing he'd stop, and wishing he'd never. Her lips were parted in a soft moan, but anything more than that was beyond her. All she was capable of, at that point, was hanging on and closing her eyes.

Armand would have smiled if his mouth hadn't been busy. But as it was, he was more than happy to just throw himself into this experience. In some ways, there was little more intimate than a vampire and his victim lost on the feeding trance. He'd never understood how some vampires made it so awful, when it could be so amazing for both people involved.

His mind slid into hers as his teeth broke the skin of her neck, though it wasn't as easy as it could be. It was seem that telepaths, taken in a fashion that wasn't exactly willing, could be a bit difficult. Well, that was fine. The pleasure was there either way, and he could feel it in her head, too.

As her blood flowed into him, he became warmer, and his skin paled a little bit more. The dark tan lightened. It wouldn't take long for him to go back to his previous whiteness, not with all these lovely people around to feed on... but this pleasant thought process was interupted as he came across what he had been looking for. Ah, that made sense. David must have published that book, after all.

But it had been enough to break the connection, the shock of knowing that she knew his life story. He withdrew his teeth, licking away the wounds, and then pulled away. So, you know my story. I should kill David for this, but perhaps I should have known he would publish my words.

Juniper arched against him, her grip slackening slightly as she battled with mind invasion and blood loss, weakening still further, becoming even more open to Armand, which is exactly what he wanted out of her. A bit of information, a bit of blood...And it had been so easy for him to get it. She'd gone to him for the price of a song, because he'd played (knowing or unknowingly) on her biggest fault. She thought she knew everything.

Beyond fear, beyond pain, and far beyond pleasure, Juniper's irritation with herself swelled up, right about the same time that the vampire lost hold. And really, a frustrated and pride-bruised Juniper wasn't anything that anyone wanted to deal with.

If he hadn't, Lestat would have, and badly, the attention whore... Juniper thought in return, one of those idle thoughts that, if they had been speaking aloud, probably would have come out of her mouth, only to have her wishing she could take it back. It could have been worse. And really, Armand should have been thanking his lucky stars that the Brat Prince hadn't gotten around to it.

She was too annoyed at herself to be angry at Armand for what he had done. After all, it was in his nature to be a manipulative bastard, so she couldn't fault him that...much. So she just stood there, limply leaning against the wall, her hand pressed over the wounds on her neck, looking at him. He really was beautiful, uncomfortably so, and it was that beyond anything else really that had her believing that he was a vampire. Not even the holes in her neck had done that. Just the fact that he was beautiful, and she wanted him.

Where am I? she asked, even her internal voice quiet, awestruck. He wasn't supposed to be real, after all. She was in shock.

The vampire had taken enough that, while she was in no danger of death, she had to be feeling a little weak. And yet, she was still able to feel so much, despite everything. So strong... It was awe inspiring, actually. Most people would have been slumped in a stupor of the aftershocks of pleasure, but not this one. He smiled. He liked her already, and not just for the taste of her blood.

Armand simply laughed at her mental comment. The smile on his lips turned rueful. Oh, no. No, the Brat Prince would not have stirred himself to publish a story about something else. That would take away from his great pain, his adventures, you know. The mental tone left one somewhat uncertain as to how he actually felt about Lestat. Longing, desire, perhaps even love, along with resentment, jealousy, and perhaps even hatred. Nothing was simple.

Or perhaps he would have. But I would have been made into either a creature as evil as Memnoch himself, or as whiny perhaps as Louis. He shook his head slightly. David had been a better choice, though he wasn't really sure how he felt about his life story being out there for everyone to know.

Very carefully, he approached her again, nicking his tongue with his teeth so a tiny bit of blood flowed. He leaned down, pressing his tongue over the wounds he had caused. The wounds on her neck disappeared. Yes, I am real, and to think, you mortals all thought I was just a dream of a mortal writer... Louis, Lestat, Claudia, Marius, yes. All real. He pulled away and raised his hand up, marvelling in how the darkness was continually fading back. Now, he had only a light tan, enough to make him look more human.

You are in the Underground, my darling one. He mentally drew her attention to the king sitting on the throne on the other side of the room, watching over everything. He brought you here, and me, too. Everyone here. Except the goblins.

Too many lifetimes of fighting to stay alive to not be, Juniper returned to his impressed little comment, rolling her neck a bit as she leaned up against the wall, trying to get her body to stop shivering and start working like an adult's, instead of a child's on a sugar high.

She laughed out loud at his argument about Lestat, and shook her head. If he could have made you out to be the devil, and himself an angel, he would have, she said with a decided nod. She understood how people like that worked, all too well. She'd been drowned and burned by too many of them. They were heralded as heroes, even though they were definitely not.

Juniper stiffened automatically when he came near again, and her lips parted in a little sigh when his tongue grazed her skin. She felt her neck when he pulled away and let out a little laugh. Neat trick, she commented with a shake of her head, looking around for something to wipe her bloody hand on before shrugging and just using the skirt of her dress. It was dark enough, no one would even notice.

Daniel was always my favourite, she said with a little smile, thinking back on the first time she'd read those books. Devoured would probably be a better word. But Daniel...she'd always understood him. Much better than anyone else. At the sound of Claudia's name in her head, Juniper shuddered a little bit and looked at Armand in an indescribable way. He'd done his best, sure, but...ew. Are they all here too? She wasn't sure she could handle one vampire, let alone a whole whack of them.

Juniper's eyes narrowed at the Goblin King and she took a step forward. I'm going to kill him, she insisted, and then moved to get around Armand and the statue, fully intent on ripping that weird blond head right off of his shoulders with her bare hands. Marsha must have been having a heart attack.

Armand laughed softly, and shook his head. Of course... but he would have to be a tormented angel. Lestat was, needless to say, a bit of a drama queen, really. He smiled sort of half-fondly at the thoughts of the flashing blue eyes and blond hair of the Brat Prince. I have done horrible things, but then, so has he.

In reality, he'd figured it out long ago. Each and every one of the immortals had done things that any moral person would be horrified by. Lestat, turning his own mother into a vampire, among others. Louis, attacking the child that had become Claudia. Marius... making Armand himself. The list could go on, but each and every one of them was guilty. Armand didn't worry about it much anymore.

He shrugged, a little bit put off guard my conversing with his victim after having fed. Normally, his chosen one would be dead. Though Armand didn't have to kill, he often did. It's useful. And Armand was really far too practical a being not to use something useful. He always treated his victims that way, licking away the wounds, to keep himself from being discovered.

He recoiled, though, and it appeared that his eyes shone red for a moment. Of course, it was only the blood tears rising, which he blinked back. Daniel... Heartbroken for the moment, he turned away to gather himself together. Daniel, who had tricked Armand into turning him, and then left him. He didn't even notice Juniper's reaction to Claudia, which was perhaps a good thing.

... I am the only one from my world that is here, so far as I know, and I believe I would have sensed their thoughts long ago. He turned back to her, his mental voice thoughtful. But a smile smile tugged on his lips as he recovered slightly from the emotional shock of thinking about Daniel again. Kill him? I suppose you could try...

Shrugging, he went along with her. This should be interesting.

Juniper knew all that, and oddly enough, Armand's admission of wrongdoing had her smiling. We all have, she noted, and she certainly wasn't exempt from that. Granted, her sins were considerably less severe than others she could think of.

She could feel the pain she'd caused, and Juniper's heart went out to him. She'd been thoughtless, mentioning something that she knew better than to bring up, and felt bad for Armand. "I'm sorry," she whispered, feeling that the voicing of it was far more meaningful than just thinking it, taking a step forward and putting her hand bravely in his cool one and giving it a squeeze. She had abandonment and betrayal in her own past, but she knew that bringing it up would do nothing to soothe Armand's feelings.

Juniper wondered if Armand thought she was actually going to try. What was she going to do? Strangle him with the yards of fabric covering her body? Not likely. Perhaps she had to be a bit less metaphorical with her new companion. But anyway, their host was in for the asschewing of his life, that was for damn sure.

She made her way through the crowd and pushed past a group of goblins, right up to Jareth, lounging in his chair. His careless attitude only fueled Juniper's irritation, and despite her stature, dress and gender, she looked truly imposing as she stood there, fuming at him. "Oi, you! Where do you get off yanking people from their homes, eh? What about my family? What happens to them? What are they supposed to think?" She demanded, but it was like he couldn't even hear her, or he was very, very good at ignoring people. She couldn't get a mental read on him at all. "Hey you tosser! I'm speaking to you!"

Frustrated, she turned to look at Armand. She was getting nowhere, as if he weren't there at all. "Can't you just like...eat him?" she asked, pouting.

Armand just nodded, accepting her acceptance of his evil along with her apology. It shouldn't affect him like this, he knew it shouldn't. Daniel was gone, not even on the same world as him anymore. And he'd never been much of a friend, really, simply using Armand to get the immortality Louis had denied to him, and then abandoning him.

Though she didn't speak of her own experiences, he read enough of them in her head that he actually smiled a little and nodded to her without comment. It was unlike him, but he didn't pry into her thoughts anymore. What he'd picked up was enough, more than enough to distract him from depressing images of Daniel.

Besides, there were more interesting things to watch. As Juniper walked up to the front of the room, he followed gracefully. Arms crossed over his chest, slightly high on the powerful blood of the telepath, he watched. The girl had an impressive vocabulary, he decided. He half wondered why she hadn't used that sharp tongue on him more than she had.

He stepped forward, however, when she spoke to him. He was about to respond when, out of the ground very nearby, a huge, strange looking... thing... popped out. It was like nothing he'd ever seen, and he gazed at it as it attacked the King. The small girl who'd summoned it, he gave a very thoughtful look to. Anyone who could do that was worth keeping an eye on.

But... it did nothing. Armand sighed softly. "I'm afraid, mon chere, that even if I did try to," his nose wrinkled up slightly, "Eat him, I wouldn't be even the slightest bit able to."

The reason for that, honestly, was that Armand interested her. She was still fairly sure that she was dreaming, somehow, despite everything that had happened, and a vampire that she'd read about fit right into that, right? That, and well, Armand had threatened her. Not her family. And when people did that...it didn't turn out well. Which was the biggest reason for her being pissed about being pulled from her home without so much as a by-your-leave. Marsha was going to have a fit.

Her gaze followed Armand's when that monster appeared out of nowhere, and Juniper stared at it with huge eyes for about a quarter of a second before she screamed bloody murder and fell down three steps in an effort to get to Armand. She didn't even bother picking herself up, just crawled behind the vampire and wrapped her arms around his legs. Which really, probably wasn't the best thing to do if he had to defend her - if he felt like it - but holy crap. There were not things like that in London. Not in her dizziest daydreams.

What were they talking about? She didn't know or care anymore, she just straightened up to a kneeling position and moved her arms to Armand's waist, holding on in a death grip. What? She couldn't hurt a vampire even if she tried. "This isn't happening. I'm going to wake up in the attic. This isn't happening..." She was past tears, past anything but complete denial. Juniper was honestly surprised she hadn't fainted.

Armand was really rather stupid sometimes. This was something that he really couldn't hope to beat, the huge, chained monster. He somehow doubted it would be interested in the imagery he could provide. So what he should have been doing was getting the hell out of here, before he got hurt. But, after all, he had tried to kill himself because of a piece of fabric with Jesus' face imprinted on it. Intelligence wasn't entirely his strong point sometimes.

With a sort of detatched curiousity, he watched as the thing attacked their host without any affect at all. Belatedly, it occured to him that he should get the hell out of there. What if the monster got mad? It was only at this point that he noticed Juniper basically cowering behind him.

It seemed the easiest thing was to pick her up, so he did so, and walked briskly for the back of the room. Which meant, of course, that he moved much quicker than a human eye could track, and was safely against the back wall in a matter of seconds. Or, at least, he hoped it was safe. But that thing was huge...

"My God... all that power, and no effect on the Sparkly King at all..."

Juniper felt herself get picked up, and started for a second before she realised she was in Armand's arms. Funnily enough, she felt safe, which was slightly backward, but she'd take a vampire over that thing any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

She didn't get herself down when he stopped, just stayed with her face pressed against his shoulder and her arms wrapped tightly around his neck, shaking. She couldn't believe he was standing there analyzing it. She'd do that later, when she wasn't going to die of shock, thanks.

After a couple of minutes, Juniper picked her head up. "I need...air..." she begged, struggling with her skirts in her attempt to get down and almost slamming into the wall. "I have to get out of here," she said, not letting go of his arm as she started for the door.

This was weird. Humans did not hold him like this, not unless he entered their minds and made them do so. He was the thing that mortals were afraid of, not the thing they looked to for protection. But he held her, at a loss for anything else to do, and because, well, now that it came down to it, he was a bit shaken, too.

He set her down, though, when she struggled, though he could have easily kept her slight form in his arms. And he watched as the thing disappeared with nothing more than a gesture from the King. He couldn't stop staring at the place where it had been, now empty, like it had never happened.

"I think that might be the wisest course of action, yes." Actually, right now, he was sort of thinking he might like to get the hell out of there, too. So though he could have removed his arm from hers easily enough, he went with her. Giant monsters were where he drew the line. He glanced around the room for Schuldig, his date whom he hadn't seen for hours, and shrugged. He'd catch up with him later. Right now, getting out of the ballroom was the most important thing.

The danger was gone, and yet, Juniper was still hovering dangerously on the edge of hyperventilating. She picked up her skirts with her free hand and practically ran from the castle, leaving her things behind, only concerned with putting as much distance between herself and that impossible thing as she could.

Once her slippered feet hit the grass outside the palace, Juniper let go of Armand and fell to her hands and knees, letting out heaving gasps of air and trying to get her heart to stop racing. She'd seen a lot in her short life, and had been through far more in her many lives, but this day had shaken her to the core.

Giving up, Juniper rolled to her back and just lay there with her eyes closed and her hands pressed over her heart. "I thought I was so strong...I'm not strong enough for this..." she muttered, shaking her head back and forth. After a minute she looked at Armand, her eyes wet. "What am I supposed to do?" she asked. "Tell me what to do."

Somehow, it hadn't fully sunk in that she was new, even moreso than he was. And somehow, she'd been stuck with the bad fortune to get him as her greeter. The irony amused him a tiny bit, but he was actually feeling the slightest bit of remorse. He'd played with her quite badly, really. If he'd known she was knew, he'd have... done the exact same thing, probably.

Well, at least he could make up for it in some small way. He knelt down beside her and took her hand in his, smiling slightly. "You are strong. You just need some time to deal with this." He sort of thought that, to be perfectly honest, he would too. And he saw horrific things all the time. But this was something no vampire had done.

"I'll tell you what to do." He became all practicality as he tried to help her to her feet. "Follow me. I'll show you around. I think that's what I was supposed to do in the first place. And you should eat something."

Juniper decided that Armand had kind of gotten a bit of a bad rap. He was being perfectly nice to her, aside from the whole biting thing, but looking back on it, she'd kind of asked for it. That and, well, if she were being really honest with herself, it had been hot. Focus, Juni, she mentally whipped herself into shape. This was hardly the time for all of that nonsense.

She got to her feet and smoothed her skirts, trying to get the grass pieces off of them, and then ran her fingers through her curls, but that was a lost cause before she'd even started. Oh well. She gave up and gave Armand a little smile, slipping her hand back into his and leaning in to give him a small kiss, as if it were the most natural thing in the world for her to do. "Thank you."

"I had a plum in my hand..." she mumbled, but somehow, she'd lost track of that. And now that she thought about it, she was fairly starving. "Yeah, might want to replenish some blood sugar, huh?" she asked, looking at him out of the corner of her eye, a little smirk playing around her lips. She could freak out with the best of them, but she bounced back fairly quickly as well.
