Who: Jareth and everyone!
When: Day Four, evening
What: The King 'invites' everyone to his masque...
Where: Jareth's castle
Rating: Anywhere from G to R, I suppose
Status: Complete

It had been raining earlier in the day, but it had cleared up a short time ago. Jareth looked out the window of his massive ballroom, empty for now, and felt a little bit disoriented by the fact that the Labyrinth had just disappeared. Of course, he'd made it happen, but it had been a long time since he'd felt so exposed. But he couldn't very well have people needing to wander through the Labyrinth, could he? And the two who had been running it had been transported to the castle already, and he knew from the screams of rage that they were being dressed at this very moment.

The king smiled and turned away from the window, checking out his ballroom. It was quite spectacular, with a large orchestra pit, many snack tables, and, of course, lots of empty space for dancing. This, he figured, would be a night to remember. He snapped his fingers and peered into the crystal that appeared there, scrying on each and every person he'd brought to the Underground. Some, he knew wouldn't come on their own, and he sent crystals floating out to ensare them. Of course, some might just be strong enough to resist that pull, so he had goblins standing by to bring others in. Whether willing or not, everyone would be attending, he'd seen to that.

Dressed in his finery, with an evil looking mask in the guise of a leering demon, he walked over to his throne. Draping himself casually over it, he waited. People would be arriving anytime, now. He didn't fool himself for a moment that some wouldn't take this chance to attack him, which was why he wasn't precisely there. Anyone who tried to attack him, he knew, would find their useless effort wasted against what was no more than a projected image.

He gestured, and a goblin slave brought him a glass of wine. This, he was convinced, was going to be a night to remember.

Yaten felt strangely apprehensive about the masque. It wasn't the fact that their kidnapper would probably be there. It wasn't even that he hated social events like this. No, he was apprehensive because of the outfit that he'd found on his bed when he'd returned from finding breakfast this morning. He'd planned on just transforming, counting on the unusualness of seifuku to count as a costume. Instead, very neatly laid out on his bed was a full black skirt, complete with rather extensive black on black embroidery and beading. The top was a separate piece, designed much like his fuku top, complete with the winged star and sailor collar and green accents. A bit more covering than the traditional top, and a stiff fabric instead of leather, but the resemblance was uncanny. Add in the black leather half mask sprinkled with tiny star-like crystals, and Yaten was severely disturbed. The outfit was perfect, almost exactly what he would have designed for himself for such an event on Kimmoku. Someone was paying far too much attention to him, especially since the outfit was obviously designed for a woman. He'd only henshined once since arriving, and apparently, Jareth had noticed.

Still, it was a lovely costume, and Yaten was never one to turn down something as well crafted as this obviously was. And he did have a date to pick up. He felt a very brief flash of guilt as he henshined, realizing he'd not told his date anything about the whole gender issue. But she pushed that from her mind as she stripped out of her seifuku and began dressing. It's not like it had ever been intended as romantic date.

Dressed, primped and polished Yaten left the room. She grabbed a passing goblin and got directions to Rose's room. It didn't take long to get there, and she knocked, three times on the door.

Back home, Rose wouldn't have thought twice about going dressed properly to one of these sorts of affairs. She and her school friends would've laughed at those attending before going out and finding some dark, dingy pub that didn't check their identification. In general, she'd never been one for dressing up, and had always been more comfortable in jeans or sweats and trainers than any sort of cutesie dresses or skirts.

But the dress she'd found in the back of her closet was most definitely a dress. A full gown, actually. And she hated to admit it, but it was beautiful. Difficult as all hell to put on, especially on her own, but she didn't exactly know her dorm mates well yet and couldn't see running up and down the halls, giggling to each other as they got ready. Her hair proved to be even more difficult, but wearing it loose didn't really look right with the dress. So up it went, into complicated curls with the curling iron she'd found not-so-strategically placed on her dresser. Clearly, when Mr. Sparkly King wanted you to go all out, he made prior arrangements.

It had taken longer than she'd expected, and Rose answered the door with a few curls still hanging loose and her gold cat mask dangling from one finger. She didn't even bother to see who it was before swinging the door open. She only knew a handful of people there, and since killing someone was apparently nigh on impossible, she had no qualms about letting in her guest. It was either Yaten, her date for the evening, or Jack or perhaps Tonks if she was the run around and giggle beforehand sort. Which Rose sincerely doubted.

"Hullo," she greeted, and blinked. For whatever reason, she'd assumed Yaten to be male though in fairness, she didn't exactly speak Japanese and couldn't judge based on name alone. Her own name was pretty one-gendered, though. Still, it wasn't as if she couldn't have an open mind. It was a ball, after all, not a one-night stand, and now that she'd gone through all the trouble to dress, Rose had no intentions of staying in. Especially since Jareth had all but threatened bodily harm if they didn't. "Yaten?" At that point, she could only hope she was pronouncing it right, no matter the owner's gender.

Yaten smiled behind her mask and gave a formal bow, with her hands on her knees. "Indeed" she said, pushing her mask up and off her face. "I figured it was only fair if I picked you up, since I'm the one that offered the invitation."

She looked Rose up and down, appraisingly. "You look nice" she said finally, probably the most compliment she was likely to utter tonight. Yaten, no matter what gender she wore was not big on flattery. She kicked lightly at her own skirt, causing the fabric to billow out a moment. "Shall we get this over with?" she asked, offering her arm with mock politness.

Considering their goal was to make everyone else completely miserable that night, Rose took the compliment for what it was worth. And her companion for the evening did look nice, if a bit futuristic for a truly authentic masque. Not that she, herself, thought her gown was completely period fitting. Looked more Tudor-era than Italian or French. Still, they'd make a pretty pair, and the thought brought a smile to her face. "You look nice, too. We'll attract attention if nothing else."

What the hell, right? She hadn't expected to fall in love that night or anything, so who cared who she went with? It was no different than going with Shareen instead of some boy. "Just a sec." She hurriedly threw the last couple of curls up into the pins that already held the rest of her hair. With a smirk, she accepted the offered arm and kicked the door shut behind her with her foot. Flats, thank God, or she'd probably be ready to kill someone before the night ended. "There. I do believe we've a ball to attend."

"Of course. I always look nice" Yaten said with a smirk. It was hard to tell from her tone if she was joking or she honestly believed that. Either was possible.

Fortunately, she'd kept her fuku boots, which put her only slightly shorter than the other girl. There were some distinct disadvantages to being short. At least with someone of a similar mindset this night wouldn't be as painfully boring as some of the events she'd been to.

"I know you were expecting someone male" she said as she held open the door to the ballroom. "But I wanted to be ready and able to fight if his Lordship shows up."

Rose looked a bit surprised at the admission, but shrugged carelessly. "Doesn't really matter in the end, does it?" she said as a thought. "The male thing, not the fighting thing. Though... Wait, you say that like you have a choice in the matter."

Now that was something even Jack hadn't accomplished. So many species, so little time, indeed, but had he managed to switch himself? Oh, no, he was good, but not that good. The thought made her smirk a bit. How could she not, she'd met quite a few species, and a few with no specific gender at all, but none who could switch them. "Is that common where you're from? Having a uh...choice, I mean?"

Yaten shrugged. "Where I'm from it's a choice, though you're born one or the other." She threaded through the crowd with the ease of someone who's been to far too many parties, making a beeline for the drinks and refreshments. That was what they'd come for, wasn't it? To stand by the punch and be snarky?

She waited for Rose to join her before continuing. "I was born female, or I wouldn't be a senshi, but when we came to earth we decided to use male form and it kinda got stuck that way except when we transformed. Seems like the same thing here."

In true wallflower mode, Rose leaned against the wall with her arms crossed in front of her. She surveyed the group in front of her, ready to smile if prompted or snap if things went south from there. She wasn't hungry yet--hadn't really been since they'd gotten there--but the scenery was plenty worth looking over.

She was, however, listening intently to Yaten's story. It was something she'd never heard of, but she found it fascinating. "That's...incredible, actually. And I've heard my share of weird things." Shaking her head, she offered a small smile. "Bit strange though, I imagine, being born one way and stuck another when you're used to being able to change it up and all." Would she ever choose to turn male? Probably not, no. Might come in handy, though, for some of her more undercover missions. The number of aliens who frequented strip clubs was a little disturbing, honestly.

Yaten grabbed a glass of punch and mirrored Rose's position on the wall, sipping at her drink as she surveyed the growing crowd.

"I was never one for 'changing it up' that much." she said with a slight shrug. "Now Seiya on the other hand..." She gave a rueful snort and took another sip. Probably why there'd been that whole mess with Usagi in the first place. Seiya had always been far to willing to walk both sides of the gender line. "It's standard operating proceedure on Kinmoku, but I think most people pick one and stick with it. Usually the gender they're born with, but eh." She shrugged again. "You talk as if you've seen a lot. Didn't know London had quite that much crazyness going on" To be fair, what Yaten knew about London was practically less than nothing, but she wasn't going to admit that.

Rose gave a small laugh at that and shrugged her shoulders, heavier than usual under the bulky gown. She could stand for something stronger than punch, and kept an eye out for the glasses of champagne she'd seen being carried around by goblins on their entrance.

"You could say that. London is a...what's the word? Plethora? It's packed full, let's say that, of craziness. Keep in mind, I've traveled the galaxy through different points in time. Or did you not think it strange at all that I didn't react at all when you mentioned being from another planet?" She smirked a bit at that, pleased with the fact that she did, at least, have that working for her.

Yaten blinked a little in surprise as she mentioned traveling the galaxy. Hadn't humans only just managed to make it off planet? And not even very far at that? Wait, no. She'd mentioned a companion before, when they'd talked about time travel. That made more sense. Probably a senshi or something similar.

"You don't bore the shit out of me" she said in response to Rose's question. "That right there meant there was something different about you"

At that, Rose had to laugh, much more genuinely than she had before. "Well, then I guess I'm glad I'm at least relatively interesting," she joked, shrugging again. In truth, there was something different about everyone in this strange new place. Some she couldn't tell right off the bat, but there were people who, before being yanked into this new location, she'd thought were from movies, of all things. "And I have to say, I can't complain about my 'date' for the evening, so I'm not exactly bored, either."

Yaten gave a sardonic half smile. "Most people bore me, so consider it a compliment" She sipped at her punch, realized it was gone and glared at the cup. Fortunately a goblin came by at that moment with a tray of champagne so she exchanged her empty cup for an alcoholic one. That was a nice change. In Tokyo she'd been under the drinking age.

She leaned back against the wall and gave Rose a sideways glance. "Now I believe we've got some snarking to do. Her." She jerked her chin to indicate one of the dancers on the floor "You'd think someone would have told her she was spilling out the front."

"Someone really ought to," Rose agreed, reaching for her own glass of champagne before the irritating little creature could scurry away. "Leave something to the imagination, damn, I'm almost embarrassed for her." Her eyes rolled in annoyance. "Course, the entire dress is a little snug. Looks a bit like a sausage roll if you squint."

"One made by an blind sausage packer at that. Corset tops can only do so much." In all fairness the dress wasn't all that bad, but Yaten was rarely fair when it came to snarking.

She pointed covertly at another of the dancers. "And red is so not his color"

Oh, yeah. Rose was definitely going to have a good time tonight, whether she'd have chosen to come or not. For one, there was still a part of her with a thirst for knowledge concerning the entire universe. And her companion for the evening was definitely not from her part of the universe, in either dimension. Nor had she ever met anyone who could change their gender at will.

But also, it had been a long, long time since she'd allowed herself to simply be a bitch. And that's exactly what she felt like as she rolled her eyes at the fashion nightmare that danced by. It probably wasn't fair, considering the odds were against any of their victims having picked out their own outfits. But she was so tired of being polite and caring when it got her nowhere. "Why can't men dress themselves?" she complained. "No offense, of course, but honestly, I can count on one hand the men who can match shoes to an outfit correctly and three of those are gay."

"It's genetic" Yaten said, nodding slightly. "Something in the Y chromosome that makes it nearly impossible to understand color." Though she was loath to admit it, this was actually turning out to be rather fun. She didn't have to be nice, and she was with someone who actually shared her snark. She sipped at her champagne to hide a smile.

"Of course, to be fair there's a lot of girls who can't pick color either" She used her glass to gesture at another dancer. "It's a shame, since the dress itself is rather nice."

"Maybe she got a bit too much Y chromosome. But I don't think I've seen anyone wear that shade of green since the 1980s. And, um, there's a reason." Rose rolled her eyes, taking a moment off of her snarking to keep an eye out for those she was actually interested in seeing. Tonks was there, decked entirely in purple, right down to her hair. It actually made for a nice effect or else Rose might've thought it a bit weird. And if she wasn't mistaken (and she'd checked out that arse enough to be pretty certain she wasn't), she was pretty sure she'd seen Jack around, leather trousers and all. No, not all of their companions for the night had done too badly in the dressing department. In fact, some actually looked nice.

But that was the Rose she'd been for the last several years speaking, and she pushed her down to the depths she'd come from. "If I had to get stranded here, the least they could've done was dressed everyone appropriately. I don't think they ran around half-naked in the medieval era."

Yaten shrugged, considering she was one of the ones not exactly dressed in medieval fashion. "Maybe consideration was given for those of us not from Earth?" she said with a wry smile.

She had to admit, however reluctantly that the overall effect of the masque, and most people's costumes were actually very pretty. She watched the ebb and flow of the dancing crowd in silence for a long moment, taking occasional sips of her champagne.

A chance break in the crowd caused her to stiffen and push away from the wall. There, across the room lounged their kidnapped, plain as day. "Bastard" Yaten growled, even as the crowd shifted again, hiding the Goblin King from view. "Did you see him?"

"I saw him," Rose confirmed, her blood boiling at even the sight of him. He hadn't been hiding, or even looking ashamed. In fact, he looked somewhat bored, maybe even a little amused. Well, why shouldn't he? He'd ruined their lives, not the other way around. "He doesn't even look the least bit apologetic. What sort of power must someone have to pull people from different parts of the universe?"

It was a peculiar question, maybe, but it genuinely worried Rose to think about. She knew certain species that could, and none ever led to good things. "No one seems to be bothering him, though. Is he guarded?"

"Power to burn" Yaten said as she stepped away from the wall. "And arrogant." She wanted to snarl, to hit something, to unleash her power against the bastard. She could feel her upper arms tremble with her barely contained anger. But doing any of those things had the possibility of getting innocent people hurt. However cynical and bitter she might be, Yaten was still a senshi, and she wouldn't put people's lives at risk if there was a better way.

"Only one way to find out" she said, her words clipped and precise. "Stay here. I'll see if I can... talk to him" She didn't wait to hear Rose's response before slipping into the crowd, for once thankful of her short and slight build as it made weaving through the dancers far easier.
