When: Day 3, midday
What: Arriving
Rating: PG

Alone again. No matter how many times it happened, or how often he told himself that it was for the best, there was always a part of the Doctor that died every time he had to say his version of goodbye. But still, it was better to be alone. After all, he'd almost just lost everyone he'd ever cared about, all at once. How could he be so unbelievably selfish to resent the fact that they were all living their lives now? It didn't matter. He'd just go on with his life, like he always did. It was the only thing to be done.

Walking around the TARDIS, the Doctor ran his fingers along the controls in an idle fashion, trying to decide where he'd go. Trying to pick the perfect place, the perfect setting, to distract himself with, but nothing was coming. All he could see as he looked at his ship was the people that had piloted it with him. His friends, his companions. His family.

Before a button was pressed, before a decision was made, the TARDIS roared to life, knocking the Doctor onto his ass. He scrambled back up, fumbling for the controls. "Not again. Not again! NO! Come on!" he begged, not daring to wonder at what hell he'd walk into this time.

Just as suddenly as it had started, the noise stopped and the TARDIS was still. Still, silent, and completely unresponsive. "What? WHAT?!" he squeaked, staring at the monitors and controls as if he were expecting them to jump back into operational status and yell 'April Fool!' But there was nothing to be done, at the present at least. He'd might as well figure out where the hell he'd landed this time.

Opening the door to the TARDIS, the Doctor shut it firmly behind him and then looked around. A medieval setting, sure, but it was commercialized, fake, definitely not the time period he was used to. Looking around further, he realised this wasn't even a planet he was used to. This wasn't a planet he'd ever heard of! "Where the hell am I?" he wondered aloud, pulling at his hair with one hand and looking decidedly confused.

The whole Renaissance faire thing was really starting to annoy Yaten. Then again, most things were really starting to annoy him. He was easily annoyed. So, when a large blue box appeared more or less directly in the path he'd been walking, he muttered a curse and changed his path to walk around the sudden new annoying obstacle. Then the box opened and a rather manicly confused man sort of stumbled out.

Now this was interesting. Yaten folded his arms over his chest and watched as the man looked around. His question was an obvious one, but Yaten couldn't fault the man. It was the first thing that had flashed through his mind when he'd arrived after all.

"Well, if you figure it out, do let us know" he said, pitching his voice to carry. "Far as I've been able to tell this place is just called the city"

But by the time that Yaten said anything, the Doctor was no longer in a place where he was going to hear much at all. The glasses were out and on, his hair looked even worse than usual, and the Doctor was talking to himself. "Semi-major axis at 149,597,887.5 km/1.0000001124 AU...same as Earth. Standard rotation period, 86,400 seconds...Iron, silicon, magnesium, nickel...78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen...It's all the same, all the same. What's different?"

Stopping his pacing somewhere near Yaten, the Doctor finally snapped out of it and noticed him. "Oi! You there!" he said, running up to Yaten, his brown pinstriped suitcoat flapping open behind him and his tie stuck on his shoulder. "You said city? What city? And what day is it? Definitely not Sunday, Sundays are boring and this isn't boring." He grinned suddenly, his panic turning into glee with the flip of a switch. "This is brilliant!"

Yaten snorted as the man ran up to him. Why did he always seem to attract the crazy ones?
"Don't know what city" Yaten said, slowly, not quite sure if this man was entirely sane. "And I'm not even sure if the days here are the same as they were back home. I... ah, don't think it's Sunday"

It was probably best to try to placate the crazy man.

The Time Lord looked the little man up and down and then shrugged. "And what are you then?" he asked, waited a beat, and then blinked. "Blimey, that was rude. Anyway, you're not human, so where race are you? Is this your home planet? Well, can't be then if you don't know what city this is so nevermind that. I wonder if it's a parallel dimension. I bloody well hope not, had enough of that thanks..." And there he was, off talking to himself again, since it was a pretty fair bet that no one was going to follow what he was jabbering on about except himself.

Then he blinked and was back in focus again. "Anyway, I'm the Doctor. Who're you?"

Yaten gave the older man an appraising look of his own.
"Who says I'm not human?" he asked, affronted. True, he wasn't, but how could this stranger tell? But the man was already off babbling. Yaten only understood about half of what the man was going on about, which was doing nothing to improve his mood.

"I'm Yaten Kou" he said when asked and huffed. "Listen, do you want this place's intro or not?"

The Doctor raised an eyebrow and smiled. "No one says, but I'm right," he said without any trace of uncertainty. It was as plain as day to him. Then again, he wasn't human either, so that might have made the difference.

"Pleased to meet you, Yaten Kou," the Doctor said with a smile and a nod, friendly as you'd like. "Course I do!"

He sighed. The crazy ones. Seiya got the swooning fangirls, Taiki got the smart ones, and he got the crazies. Seriously, what kind of name was "the Doctor"?

"If you say so, it must be true?" Yaten asked, with a raised eyebrow. Not that it really mattered. He shrugged and gestured to indicate the whole area. "Not much to say really. Don't know the name of this place, but excepting the goblins, as far as I can tell everyone here's been grabbed up by the mad king of this place. Don't know why. Don't really care except to get him to send me back home. Feh, I'd take being sent back to earth at this point."

"I'm rarely wrong," the Doctor said cheerfully, rocking back on his heels with his hands in his pants pockets, looking relaxed and pleased.

"Grabbed up by a mad king..." he repeated thoughtfully, pulling black-rimmed glasses from the inside pocket of his suit jacket and putting them on. "Well who's this king? Where do I find him? Because I need to get my ship going again, and I reckon he's got something to do with it not working."

Hope springs eternal for some, Yaten supposed.

"You really think someone who can grab people from all sorts of different worlds is going to respond to a stern talking to?" He snorted. "You sound like Usagi." Granted, Usagi had been successful in the end, but that was entirely beside the point. "His name's Jareth, and if you really want to talk to him..." Yaten pointed towards the Labyrinth, which was just visible on the other side of the city. "He told us we could challenge that"

The Doctor smiled. "It wouldn't be the first time, and I reckon that he's never had a talking to from me." And really, that made all the difference in the world. This world, or any other, as a matter of fact.

"Right!" he said with obvious glee, pulling down his glasses and looking over to where Yaten indicated. "So, he's trapped people here against their will, left them with nothing, and expects them to play for their freedom? Not on my watch," he said with a defiant nod, pulling out his sonic screwdriver and turning it on, pointing it toward the labyrinth. A buzzing sound emitted from it, along with a blue light at the tip. Though it looked like the silliest thing in the world, it apparently did something for the Doctor, as he swung it toward the city and then gave a little nod. "There's alien technology all over the place," he muttered, shaking his head. "I need to know more."

That had to be one of the most idiotically obvious statements Yaten had ever heard.

"Of course it's 'alien tech'" he said, just barely repressing the desire to roll his eyes. "You're the one who said this wasn't earth." He had little patience for this man's hero act. "And he didn't leave us with nothing. Suppose a goblin or something should be coming by soon with your key and journal. And I at least still have most of my powers" All his (her?) powers except teleportation of course.

"There's alien tech all over Earth," the Doctor corrected, pursing his lips for a moment and not looking at Yaten, instead concentrating on the end of his sonic screwdriver. "But this is a different kind than generally found, which makes all the difference."

Right on cue, a goblin showed up and passed over the mentioned items, disappearing just as quickly as it had appeared. "Riiiight," the Doctor muttered and then shoved everything in the pockets of his suit coat, which really shouldn't have been able to hold it all. But, they were bigger on the inside, after all. "Well, thanks, Yaten," he said with a smile and a little wave, then ran off at top speed for the dorms.
