When: Day Sixteen, noonish.
What: A Slayer needs a Watcher.
Where: Aquarium
Rating: R for Faith!
Status: Incomplete

The dreams wouldn't stop. Ever since since the day she'd made it through the Labyrinth with River, every night had been the same. Being who she was, she tried to ignore it. She had her pride, after all, and she'd told Snape that he was insane for the things he'd claimed. But about at least one thing, he must have been right. Having prophetic dreams was a real drag sometimes, she decided. She didn't really like being bossed around by anyone, not even her own dreams.

It was pointless, though. She'd learned that over the years. It wouldn't go away until she gave in and did what her dreams wanted. So she set her jaw firmly and set out as soon as she woke up. The weather sort of suited her mood, dark and dreary. Of course, she didn't really have any idea where to find the taciturn wizard that she sought. The dreams might pester her into doing this, but they wouldn't really help her once she'd decided to do it.

Still, it wasn't that hard to figure it out. Grab a goblin (literally) and make it show her the way. She was more than strong enough to hold the struggling creature, and it made an excellent guide, once it figured out that was the only way to get rid of her. It led her to the aquarium, and she gave it a bit of a skeptically curious look before walking in. She'd never been to a place like this before, since they cost money. Apparently this one didn't, though she still felt a little guilty, like she was sneaking in.

It took her about fifteen minutes to track him down. She kept getting sidetracked by the animals. She saw at least a couple of exhibits that she was sure weren't from earth. But the memories of her obnoxious dream kept her going, and soon enough, she saw the black-robed figure that she'd been expecting. With a deliberately calm, even arrogant, expression on her face, she leaned against the tank where he was standing. "So... Skeletor...you know that stuff you said about being my Watcher?"

Faith made a face as she realized what the Potions Master was doing. She wasn't squeamish, she couldn't have been with the stuff she'd been through, but this was just weird. "What the fuck are you doing? Is this one of those weird magic things?" Her gaze was a mixture of curiousity and disgust, and she just looked at the strange tentacled thing that Snape was studying. She was pretty sure she had glimpsed various beakers and things about his person, and couldn't help but wonder.

But none of that was as important as what she'd come to say. The best way, she figured, was just to get it out. Not think about her pride or anything, just blurt it out. So she took a deep breath, then just started speaking. "So, you know. Watcher. You still up for it?" She leaned with elaborate casualness against the glass of the tank in front of them.

"Cause, you know. We could try it." She was so sure she was being confident, that none of her nerves were showing, but as usual, her face was easy to read to people who were paying attention. And she was obviously full of nervous, restless energy, despite her casual words and pose.

Snape's eyes widened briefly before he got them under control. He had understood what she was getting at and wasn't sure he could believe his ears. Assessing Faith's body language, the wizard judged that she was incredibly nervous about presenting the idea as she had, which meant either that she was embarrassed about admitting that she had recalled their previous association or that she was anxious because the idea had come to her independently for what seemed to her to be the first time. Turning toward her, he attempted to solicit the truth of the matter through conversation.

"I am collecting reagents. Am I up for it? I assume you are inviting me to be your Watcher. I sense you are serious. What brought this on?"

Snape himself sensed the gravity of this moment, though he was intent on not letting it on. For his own security, it was important that he know she was serious before he make this commitment again. His memories of their previous relationship were still strong for him, and he was wary of risking such intense emotion again.

"Ew. PETA is gonna get on your ass, you know." She eyed the creature again. "Just don't cut one of those tentacle things off and we're five by five, got it?" She didn't really think she wanted to see that. That thing didn't look like it was even from earth, as far as she could tell. Who knew what sort of thing would happen if he actually tried cutting something off of it?

"Well, you know." She was still using her casual tone and pose that showed just how nervous she was. "It seemed so important to you, so I thought I'd give it a chance. A great humanitarian, that's me." She eyed him, wondering if he was buying it, and then added the truth at the very end. He was obviously very intelligent, and probably not that easy to lie to. "I had this dream, you know. Slayers have these dreams that, like, tell us the future and what to do and shit. And you were my Watcher."

She looked at him for a moment, then turned back to the creature from which he'd been collecting slime. It was easier to look at it then to wait for the reaction of the Potions Master, especially because she was uncomfortably aware of how cruel she'd been to him at first. "So what is this thing, and what are you gonna use the slime for?"

Snape watched Faith carefully, regarding every nervous twitch and casual gesture with a practiced eye aided by his nigh-effortless use of legilimency. It was uncanny; she had really come to it anew, but in exactly the same way as the first time. The potions-master could recognize the hand of Fate when he saw it in action. Such a thing could not be fought. Not without a flutter in his chest he wondered if matters were destined to continue to unfold as they had on Mirage. Turning back to the aquatic monstrosity squirming a pane's-thickness away from them, he addressed her second topic first.

"I have no idea what this thing is. I have studied every creature on Earth, magical and mundane, and I have never encountered it. That being the case, I will have no use for the slime until I can subject it to some magical tests.

"If you are very serious about me being your Watcher--and I can sense that you are--I will have you be very clear on the terms of our arrangement."

He turned to face the girl, shorter than he, and drove his gaze deep into her eyes.

"I will be your mentor, your trainer, your confidant, and your guide. I will do my utmost to carry out a Watcher's responsibilities, and in turn you will respect me. You will heed my warnings and conduct yourself with propriety and decorum," he recalled her conduct on Mirage, "to the best of your ability. Are we very clear?"

For Faith, direct eye contact was something that only happened when she initiated it, because that way, she was in control of what could be a very uncomfortable thing. But he held her gaze effortlessly, refusing to let her go, and she bit nervously on her lower lip before realizing what she was doing and forcing herself to stop. Something about the way he was looking at her just made it impossible to look away. Deep down, she had to respect anyone who could take any sort of control over her, and, deep down in some subconscious way, she started thinking of him differently. He'd been someone to laugh at, to make fun of, before.

Still, it would never do to show any of that. She drew herself up, standing more straight, in an effort to show that she wasn't intimidated. "Yeah, yeah. Don't get your god damned panties in a bunch, Skeletor." Although if he wanted her to act with 'propriety and decorum', he was fighting an uphill battle, no doubt about that. When he didn't look away from her, she flinched slightly, and nodded once. "Yeah, we're clear."

Once more, she found herself biting her lower lip, and once more, she forced herself to stop. "So... uh... what now?" He'd already been through this once already, after all, and she hadn't. She knew what Giles had done, and the other three Watchers she'd had, but he obviously wasn't from the same place they were. She didn't really have any idea what to expect, so she turned to him, expecting him to know.

Snape was pleased with Faith's response. He saw her squirm under his gaze, and he saw her become aware of her squirming. He saw her reflexive defiance, and he saw her ultimate submission. Even if it was just one act, the wizard could tell it was not insignificant. Perhaps, he dared to dream, things would go more smoothly this time. He did, after all, have a sort of advantage over her, since he had been through this before. He turned back to the aquarium tank, giving her a break from what he knew was an uncomfortable experience for her.

"What now is I would like you to give me a report on any Slayer related business you have conducted while here. Have you encountered any vampires or monsters? Have you attempted to slay any of them?"

Snape knew very well there were vampires here, and he did not think Jareth would allow them to be slain; nevertheless, things did have to start somewhere, and until he had devised a plan of training the basics of the Watcher/Slayer relationship would have to do.

When Snape looked away, Faith felt like she could breathe more easily. No doubt about it, she could see why he would be a very good teacher, in his own way. He wouldn't tolerate crap, obviously. Which made her wonder for a moment why he had put up with so much from her. She'd been fairly horrible to him, just because he made her feel uncomfortable. She sighed softly, and turned her gaze away from him toward the tank he was looking at, not because she gave a damn about it, but because it was easier than looking at him.

"Ten four on that one, man." She turned around, leaned casually against the wall nearby, and thought back. "Okay, so there were some demon things in the Labyrinth, some vamps, of course, and a werewolf." She considered for a moment. "Uh, mostly things I've fought were in the Labyrinth though. There was this one vamp that was getting everyone's panties in a bunch, the Ranger dude wanted me to kill him. I wouldn't though, because Schu was all into him or whatever."

Her dark head tilted to the head as she thought, and then she gave a little shrug with one shoulder. "That's about it. I ate some pie, too. That was awesome. And met this dude from the future who wanted to fuck his best friend, who was like a doctor or something. He was pretty cute. The captain guy. Did you ever see Star Trek?" She laughed suddenly. "Yeah, no. I doubt it somehow."

Snape stood beside his newly re-acquired Slayer as they both looked into the briny tank. It was a good beginning to the conversation. They did not need to look at each other for it to continue. It was enough that they were linked through their words and their object of vision.

"I see. So you slew many fiends in the Labyrinth, but have made no serious effort to destroy any demons outside of it. In fact, you have refused to slay a vampire when specially requested to do so, for personal reasons. I see. What I do not see is what pie and promiscuous doctors from the future have to do with the question I asked. Are you a Slayer or aren't you?"

Snape hoped that the slight tone of displeasure in his voice would not go unheeded. If the girl was to respect him, he had to be firm with her, and he had to be clear about his expectations. He had not lied. He was interested in an answer to his question, not in every frivolity she may have involved herself in in the meantime.

Faith frowned and shook her head. "No way, man, you make it sound all weird. It wasn't anything like that." Although anything like what, she couldn't have said. Why would she refuse to kill a vampire who she didn't know, didn't have any connection with, other than a man she'd slept with once and who she considered, in some way, almost a friend? It didn't make sense.

Of course, being who she was, she would rather not think about it, and passed it over rather easily. "No way, dude, it was just that, like, we're not allowed to kill outside the Labyrinth. Gotta follow the rules, just a good little girl, that's me." Also, it provided a comfortable excuse for why she'd done what she'd done.

"Well, anyway," She changed the subject, deciding that they'd had enough sharing time for now, "I'm gonna blow. Later." With that, she pushed away from the wall and walked off toward the door.
