Who: Shiloh and Rudolf
What: Shiloh's arrival
When: Early afternoon
Where: outside the amusement park
Rating: G
Status: Complete

Shiloh watched Amber's press conference from afar. She hadn't found a decent place to live yet. Returning home after the opera was hard for her because too much of it filled her with too many conflicting emotions. Anger with her father for lying all these years--she found his area behind the fireplace where he kept his Repo uniform as well as a dead body proving it all real--sadness for the death of someone she loved, and worry for what the future will bring now that the company was in Amber's, clearly uncapable, hands. She did wonder though how hard Amber had to fight her brothers for that title. The Graverobber did offer to take her in but she feared what living that sort of life would mean. Though it was rather tempting...

Not sure how much more she could take of listening to Amber's lies--though the bit about offering her fallen face to charity was interesting--Shiloh turned away to talk to find the Graverobber. However when she turned down an alley the darkness consumed her and suddenly she found herself standing near an enterence to...was that an amusement park?

Wide-eyed and confused Shiloh stared at the enterence. What had she landed in?

Shiloh was trying to understand what exactly the amusement park was like. She had never been to one before but she had heard about them. The sight was rather interesting. The sudden voice behind her made her jump and she turned around to see the man approach. He was definitly not from New York. She held onto the strap of her shoulder bag and looked the man over.

"Right...a walk..." she said though not finishing her thought because her attention was taken for a moment by a fly near her. It...didn't glow...there was no blue hue to it. This was strange...it seemed there was no infection of Zydrate.

Frightened more than before the fear was obvious in her face when she focused back on the man before he. "Where am I? How did I get here? What happened?!" she let out in a rush.

As Rudolf approached, the girl grew frightened. He stopped a few paces from her, listening to her barrage of questions as understanding settled into his mind. "It's all right, Fraulein," he said, smiling kindly at her and speaking in a friendly, open tone. "Please, take a deep breath, and I'll try to help you. You must be new." His smile widened. "I was new yesterday, so I'm still getting used to this place too."

Introductions, he decided. Perhaps something mundane like an introduction would help to calm her down. He offered the girl his hand. "My name is Rudolf. And you are?" He decided, given her state, to just stick with his given name for the moment.

Fraulein? Shiloh didn't understand but just held onto the bag of her strap even more. She did her best to breathe like he told her and focus on what he was saying.

She stared at his hand for a moment unsure what to do with it. She had never been introduced before to anyone. Awkwardly she reached out and took his hand. "Hello." she said quietly, calming down a bit. "I'm Shiloh Wallace."

Shiloh took her hand quickly back from the man. "...Ne--New?" she forced out. "What do you mean by new?"

"That's a pretty name," Rudolf said. He'd never heard it before. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Shiloh." He squeezed her hand and shook it politely, offering another friendly smile. He recognized himself in her reactions, how he'd felt yesterday, and tried to sound as reassuring as possible as he spoke.

"It can be difficult to explain," he said, "this place is rather strange. I only arrived yesterday, myself, and in very odd circumstances." He reached toward Shiloh, intending to put a comforting hand on her shoulder. "This town is called the Underground, apparently, and is ruled by a King Jareth. It is he who brought us all here, from what I understand." If he hadn't been here for a day already, Rudolf wouldn't believe what he was saying. He hoped the news wouldn't upset this girl too badly. He was, after all, only trying to help.

"Thank you." Shiloh attempted to give Rudolf a small smile. His kindness was calming her down some. She let him put the hand on her shoulder. "The Underground...King...?" it was a quite a few words she was unfamiliar with. "So...we were kidnapped? Why would he want to do that?" though it was something she would have rather not have happened to her, Shiloh couldn't help but feel some relief to be taken away from the horrors of whatever future was going to be bestowed upon her now that Amber was in charge of Geneco.

"I don't understand it all myself," Rudolf admitted, his smile turning slightly embarrassed. "From what I gather, this King is a rather capricious individual. I can't think of why someone would want to bring us all here, but he has done so. And provided entertainment for us, in the form of this park." Rudolf gestured with his free hand. "I saw a bit of it last night, with a friend, but it seems much more lively during the day."

Rudolf turned his attention back to Shiloh. He'd have time enough for the park later. Right now, he needed to help the girl. "The King has given us rooms in which to stay while we're here. They're simple, but adequate. And, to seek an audience with him, you have to traverse his Labyrinth. The woman I met yesterday did well, and has rooms in the King's palace now, which are apparently much more comfortable." He did wonder as he spoke whether he was trying to impart too much information too quickly. But, he was just trying to be as helpful as he could.

Shiloh listened patiently as he explained. She turned to look at the park when he gestured for it and for the first time really noticed it. "I've never been to park like this before." They didn't have them in New York. Rather the only form of 'entertainment' was the operas. She often watched pieces of them through her window as Blind Mag would sing. Thinking about the Godmother she only knew for a day made Shiloh a little sad so she forced herself to focus her attention back on Rudolf.

"Rooms? Well isn't that kind of him." She rolled her eyes. Though the idea of getting through this maze to request an audience and get home seemed tempting. But did she really want to go back to the life she had? "I see..." Shiloh took in the rest of what he said and then tried to stop thinking of New York and more about the person before her. "So...where did you come from? I mean before you ended up here yesterday?" she asked curious to see if they had anything in common and therefore any similarities as to why they would both be brought to the Labyrinth.

"Neither have I, not properly, at least," Rudolf said. "We didn't have anything like this at home." He caught her sarcasm, although he tended to agree with her, felt compelled to at least give the King a token amount of respect. "At least we aren't left to fend for ourselves on the streets," he said.

Rudolf brightned when she asked where he was from. "Vienna," he said. "Capital of Austro-Hungary. Although, I was on my way out of the city when I arrived here." His brow darkened for just a moment, but he forced himself to think positively about home. He didn't want Shiloh to think it wasn't pleasant. He regarded her clothing, and thought to what his friend had said about time working differently here. "It was January, 1898. Brand new year. Almost a brand new century. Very full of promise, if one can figure out how to seize the opportunity." He thought of Elmer and Zeps and their grand ideas, ideas he'd shared and wanted to put into effect. "It's a beautiful city," he continued, "full of life. And the brightest spot in the entire city had returned, just for a few days, to shine on everyone." He smiled wistfully as he thought of his mother.

"What about you? From where did you come, Fraulein Shiloh?" The accent in her voice made him think she was not from Vienna, at the least, and he was curious about new places.

"Really?" Shiloh felt a little relieved that she wasn't the only one in the dark about these 'parks', "Neither did we." she had to smile at the idea of fending for themselves in the streets. Honestly it wouldn't have been any different from what she had been doing with the Graverobber since the most recent opera fiasco. Still she shrugged and wondered what her room would be like.

His statment of where he was from pulled her back from her thoughts to the current situation again. "Vienna?" she asked, "I'm sorry I'm not sure I know of it...but don't take it personal I never left my room much..." she had to laugh to herself at that. Much was an understatment. Try for seventeen years. However his year made her eyes go wide and have to pick her jaw up off the ground. "1898!" she couldn't believe it; but she liked the way he talked about the new year. He seemed so optimistic and kind. "I...wish I would have been able to see it." she said trying to gather her brain and think about what the beautiful city could have been like.

"Me? Oh well..." she tried to think of the best way to say it lightly but fell up short. Blunt seemed to be the way to go with this sort of thing. "I'm from New York...middle of the year...2057." she awkwardly played with a string at the edge of her shirt not wanting to see his face.

"Vienna," Rudolf said, eyes widening as she said she'd never heard of it. It was quite humbling - he'd never met someone who hadn't heard of his home. She was kind in her ignorance, though, and Rudolf smiled. "It's stunning," he said. "There are only a few places I like better."

Now it was Rudolf's turn to be surprised. "Two thousand and fifty-seven?" he said, trying not to leave his jaw hanging as the gap in time hit him. She was from a time so far beyond him...did Vienna even still exist in 2057? Perhaps that was why she didn't know of it. Perhaps they'd failed so spectacularly that the Germans had engulfed it and erased it from history. He had avoided the library here so far, but he felt an urge to see if there were history books written after his own time, ensure that his family would be safe.

He shook his head slightly, pressing a hand to his temple. "Forgive me, Fraulein Shiloh, that is quite remarkable." He struggled to find something, some scrap of knowledge that would give him some common ground with her. "New York...that's in the Americas, is it not?" He hoped it was. That was the only thing he could pull from his addled brain about it, drawing from a childhood lesson on geography and commerce. That tutor hadn't beaten him as hard, so perhaps that was why the lesson hadn't stuck as well. "What is New York like in 2057?"

Shiloh smiled at him, "Oh well I wish I could have seen it."

She nodded at him to confirm the year. Shiloh was a bit worried about what his reaction would be and continued to play with the string on her shirt. When he addressed her again she allowed herself to slowly look back up at him, peeking behind her black wig. "It is. It's in the United States." she answered. Shiloh hesitated about answering that question. Life was not exactly the happiest thing.

"It's...dark...rough. Many people fighting for their survival." she realized she was being vague but how exactly do you explain what was happening? She let out a heavy sigh and closed her eyes as she layed it all out for him, "In the early 2030s area the world suffered from mass organ failure. Many people died and many more were going to if they didn't get the help they needed. Luckily for us there was Geneco. to offer organ transplants. If you couldn't pay the bill right away they were willing to come up with an agreement so you could make small payments in the meantime." she heard the sales pitch a million times. "However, if you miss a payment the company would send the Repoman to come after you and repossess the organ you had transplanted." she did not bother to add on the fact that it was a horrible death the victim would suffer. Shiloh reached up and rubbed at her temples not wanting to continue with the story. Her father had been the Repoman and kept her hidden away from the world for seventeen years. She was still coping with his death and Amber taking over the company. It was not going to be pretty to see if she ever got back home.

At least he'd remembered his geography lessons. The worst possible thing would have been for Rudolf to have completely misremembered. He didn't want the girl thinking he was ignorant. It was bad enough that he couldn't speak to recent events with her. He listened to her tale with growing confusion, but tried his best to follow what she was saying. Organ transplants weren't exactly known to him. He got an odd mental image of someone taking his lungs and putting them in a box.

"It sounds horriffic," he said. He shook his head. "There is nothing like that here, from what I can see. King Jareth seems to think only of amusement. Whether his own or ours, I'm not sure." He turned, gesturing toward the center of town. "The buildings which house our rooms is back this way. I could take you, if you like, and help you settle in." He offered her a smile. "A very kind woman helped me yesterday. I'd have been lost without her, so I do know a little of what you must be feeling."

Shiloh was a bit surprised at her sudden rush of relief for being taken away from her world. Things would certainly be a lot easier now that she didn't have to look over her shoulder every few minutes in case of a different Repoman faithful to the company deciding to take matters into their own hands.

"Nothing at all?" she relaxed a lot more, "Could you please?" she asked moving to follow him to the buildings.

Rudolf smiled as Shiloh seemed to relax a little. He shook his head. "Nothing," he repeated. He offered her his arm. "Shall we?" he asked. Not even Stephanie would find fault with his manners.

In an odd way, the girl reminded him of his younger sister. Not that he saw much of her, thanks to his duties and her tutors, and her marriage prospects, but he'd always tried to look out for Marie Valerie when he'd been able. He hadn't had anyone to do that for him, and it had bothered him that she might end up the same. Shiloh seemed to be of a similar age to Marie as well.

"It isn't far," he continued as they began walking. "Just up this way to the main building, where you'll collect your key, and then we'll determine which of the outer buildings your room is found in."

Shiloh smiled at him when he confirmed it again. She moved to take his arm, "We shall." she laughed at the formalities and walked with him to the buildings that he was referring to.
