Day One - In the Beginning
Who: Jareth and everyone!
When: Day One, early morning
What: The King addresses his court
Where: City of Illusions, town center
Rating: Anywhere from G to R, I suppose
Status: Complete

In the beginning, everything was nothing. There was a void, black and endless. In one split second, that changed. Where there had been nothing but blackness, the vaguest shape of something began to take form. At first, it was impossible to tell what, since there was still very dark. Slowly, an area of the void began to lighten, and something could be seen to move through the dim light. Before there was more than light and dark, he was there shaping the world.

The King of the Goblins and former Ruler of the Underground looked around at what he had done, little though it appeared to be. He laughed, and it was the first sound ever heard in that place. The light continued to build, and he liked that and encouraged it. For many seconds, almost a full minute, he was very busy. He could feel others coming from the strange Planet that he had escaped. He must be ready... buildings sprung into existance, and grass, and a forest around the edge of the town. He was very guided by the place he'd been before, but also by the first Underground that had been destroyed.

Things were still shiny and new, almost not quite formed, when the first of them arrived. He supposed he'd dragged them along with him when he'd done battle with the Planet, but he wasn't worried. They wouldn't know what was going on. In the blink of an eye, they were there. Cathal, Gabrielle, Faith Lehane, Mercy Thompson, Giselle, Severus Snape, they all popped into being. The surge of energy this brought was incredible, and the lines of the city he had created, which had been hazy and indistinct, firmed into a more solid state.

Jareth searched, then, through all of the worlds that he could reach into with all his millenia of practice. Before a full ten seconds had passed since the arrival of the first ones, those from Mirage, more were brought to stand beside them. Cimorene, Helena Campbell, Hermione Granger, Jack Harkness, Jack Sparrow, Robin of Locksley, Rose Tyler, Schuldig, Steerpike, The Doctor, Willow Rosenberg and Yaten Kou. There was no rhyme or reason to his selections. He simply grabbed those who interested him and took them.

Before long at all, in fact, before even five minutes had passed since he had first walked the void, he had a decent sized group. He would bring more, but later. For now, he had a doubtless very confused court to attend to, and it wouldn't do to keep them waiting. With a gesture, he stood in the very center of the group so they tended to form a circle around him. With a slight twist of his mind, he made himself appear to sparkle, to seem taller than he was, to get their attention.

"Welcome to the Underground." His voice rang out clear and strong through the clearing in the center of the town. "I am the King of this place, and I've brought you here. Some of you will be familiar with this process, as it has been done once before. For some, this is the first time. You will be glad to know it will also be the last." Through some trick of his illusions, he appeared to be looking at each and every one of them, though of course, that should not be possible as they were all arrayed in a circle around him.

"This is your home now. You will not be leaving." He snapped, and in front of each person hung floating in the air two things, a key with a number clearly inscribed on it, and a book. "This is what I shall give you. A journal, which I shall leave to you to figure out, and a key, which is to the room you have been assigned." As he spoke, an orange/red sort of light began to fill the sky to the east. Soon, the sun broke from the horizon and began to rise, casting light on what had largely been in shadow before.

The buildings, each and every one of them, were hung about in gauzy fabrics of all colors. Tents and pavilions were in abundance throughout the area, and from somewhere not so far off, a horse could be heard to snort to itself. It was the City of Illusions in it's Ren Faire guise, which Jareth had seen while on Earth and which had struck his fancy. "This is your home." He repeated. "I have made this city for you to live in. There are only a few simple rules. You may not attempt to kill each other. You may not leave. You may not attempt to go into another's room uninvited. It's quite simple, really."

Jareth didn't pause, didn't give anyone a chance to speak, or even really think through what he had been saying. "For those of you that would not be satisfied with simply existing here in this city, there is a choice. Brave my labyrinth." He gestured toward a wall, high and thick and imposing. A large gate, easily wide enough to drive two buses through, hung open. "If you solve the labyrinth and get to my castle at the center of the structure, you will be rewarded." He paused for just a moment. "Perhaps even with your freedom." He didn't specify further than that.

"That is all. If you have any questions, any of my servants will assist you." He snapped once more, and a short, funny looking goblin scuried up. "Of course, you are welcome to ask me in person... but only if you solve my labyrinth first." As the last words came from his mouth, he was already fading from sight. Seconds later, he was completely gone, leaving those he had brought in a strange sunrise in a completely new world. The goblin, however, remained, looking at the group impassively.

Having turned away from Snape, having no real interest if he followed her or not, she scanned the rest of the group of people. She saw a few that she recognized from Mirage. Other than Snape, and of course the Goblin King Jareth, she only recognized one other. But man, was she glad to see her. She grinned at the dark-haired native woman as she came up to her.

"Hell, yeah, I'm fine...S'up, chica! Look, Skeletor is here!" She gestured over her shoulder at the dark-haired man that she'd pretty much been ignoring, but it was done in an incredibly rude way. She still hadn't forgiven the Potions master for confusing the hell out of her when she'd been brought to Mirage previously. And when Faith carried a grudge, it really got very much carried. She smiled at the dark-haired girl and touched the hand that rested on her shoulder briefly.

Then she held up that same hand, expecting a high five. "Shit, girl, looks like we got into this mess together, and we'll find our way out together." She was pretty happy about the whole thing, actually. Mercy was incredibly good company. Not to mention in a group of more or less clothed people -- she saw at least two women who were barely wearing more than she and Mercy were-- she and Mercy were the only naked ones. It made for a bond. Not that Faith was particularly self conscious. She knew people were probably staring at the two naked women, and it didn't bother her much.

"Okay, so what about that psycho 80's rocker?" She gestured to where Jareth had disappeared. "What's the dude tripping on, you know? Maybe we're still on Mirage, and he's just fucking with us." The words were said almost hopefully, though she didn't actually believe them. She'd felt the tug of being pulled to a new realm. She frowned thoughtfully. The whole being pulled around to different worlds thing was getting very, very old.

"So, anyway... you alright?" Her eyes, for a wonder, held actual real concern as she looked Mercy over for obvious bumps or bruises. Of course, the other woman had quite a few tattoos, which would have made it possibly hard to see, but she tried anyway. "Man... this last week has been like the weirdest trip of my life, no joke."

Snape was so incredibly irritated by the way Faith almost completely ignored him that he was severely tempted to stomp away in a huff. Seeking to start off in this new area with a little more dignity than that, however, he took a moment to compose himself. Unluckily, it was a moment in which he overheard Faith's greeting to her inked friend. A brief contortion of uncontrollable rage flashed across his face as he turned to confront the insolent young woman he had once 'watched'.

"Do not ever call me by that name! You may act as though you can dismiss me with a thought, but I am not a man with whom one ought to trifle! I could do very unpleasant things you if I so wished. Pray that I do not!"

Glaring at the two young women imperiously, he hoped he was making some impression, at least on the tattooed one. Faith, in his experience, was almost psychotically inconsistent in her reactions to any given situation.

Mercy was relived to see that her friend was alright the other putting her worries at ease but still looked over the other for cuts, she never seen any however her own legs were a bit red but nothing she couldn't suck up and handle Mercy spend most of her days covered in grease so what was a little light blood trickle? "Great we're both on the fine side of the fence."

She cast off the naked stares from the other people not caring at all that her body was exposed. She was a little more shy at home but for some reason since being away she was more care free going with the swing of things, adapting seemed the best choice. Mercy laughed then eyed the man that was standing with them. "Hey how about you lighten up grumpy cloak? You don't own the woman she can dismiss you if she feels like it really, she doesn't belong to anyone but herself, don't take it so personally and stop bordering on out right creepy town!" She shook her head thinking the guy had some real issues.

She shook her head turning back to Faith. "I don't know but that salvation army, bad hair style David Bowie wanna be better watch his Goblin ass or it's going to be permanently re-arranged. First the planet now we have to deal with him? This is gonna be a real joy of joys. But yeah I think we can get through it together. And yo! what about that maze thingy? You want to give it a go? I could use a good work out." Mercy was also becoming a lot more adventurous, only she wished she still had Zee's dagger.

"For real." Faith agreed, and then turned to look at Snape with a slightly amused expression on her pretty face. "Fine. You can be the Crypt Keeper, then." She smirked at him and took a half a step back so she could eye both Mercy and Snape at the same time. She winked at Mercy, and looked at Snape as if he were some vaguely interesting insect or something that temporarily had her attention.

"Dude, relax." She smiled at him, but the expression had an edge to it. "Anyway, chill, cause like, you're the luckiest fucker around right now. You got two hot naked chicks hanging out with you. Gotta be the first time in your life, right?" She really could be a bit cruel at times. And Mercy was earning Faith's approval each and every time that she opened her mouth. "Hell yeah, no one owns me! I'm a free agent, so stop with the threats. I kinda think I could kick your bony ass in 3.5, anyway."

"David Bowie!" She gasped softly. "Holy shit, he does look like him! Man, I used to have such a crush on him... but this whole thing with the hair is just weird, you know?" Faith liked Bowie's music a lot, and it was clear from the enthusiasm in her voice. She suddenly turned to Snape, snapping her fingers.

"Severus Snape? Holy shit, how the fuck did I never make this connection before!" She couldn't believe that she'd never noticed. "You're from that Harry Potter thing, man, I saw a couple of the movies. Did you, Mercy?" She looked at the dark-haired girl. "You teach Potions, but 'everyone knows it's the dark arts he fancies'." She shook her head, unable to believe she hadn't noticed that the first time she'd seen him.

At first, Snape rolled his eyes at the young women's comments. What had he said to give the impression that he owned either of them? What had he done to indicate that he deserved to be treated with anything but the respect due any sovereign person. Did he have a sign saying 'Disrespect Me' hanging around his neck? It was almost more than he could bear. Faith's cutting comment about his lack of experience spending time with naked young women only bruised him slightly. If the naked young women in question were going to treat him as these were, he wasn't sure he wouldn't rather be with clothed women, or no women at all. Pricking up his ears at Mercy's suggestion, he hoped the two of them would attempt to thread the maze. Perhaps something dreadful would happen to them and they would learn their lessons.

Faith's next comments, however, left the dour wizard quite confused. 'Harry Potter thing'? What was that supposed to mean? And how did she suddenly gain knowledge of his secret ambitions? And which movies, in particular, was she referring to? The possibility that some muggle had made a movie about Potter... but maybe she was from the future, a future in which Potter had become famous, or infamous, in the muggle world, a traitor to wizardkind. He shouldn't be surprised. Deciding he was the person to single-handedly destroy centuries of secrecy and protection for their people in the name of 'unity' or 'wizard-muggle integration' was just the sort of thing Potter and his insufferable friends would do.

Snape stared, aghast, at Faith.

"What are you..? How dare you..?"

"His music is sweet don't you think? I saw him once in Portland a few years ago." She shrugged. "I don't know what's up with the hair someone has to tell him that glam has been dead for a while now and it's just really freaky! Hope he doesn't try to pick up chicks with the rats nest on his head."

Mercy stopped and tunned to the man again looking him over. "Shit yeah, I never thought of that, he's got the whole Slitheren lovin medieval lamp post thing going on, in the last book we find out he's not really evil at all and he's been protecting that Harry Potter kid and his friends the whole time. So don't let the grumpyness fool you he's got a heart that actually beats in there some place. Pick up a book sometime dude because you're in it!"

Mercy shrugged and laughed it off her circumstances were really strange anyway maybe it was highly possible that people could be taken here from them as well, she was quickly learning that not everything was as it seemed so going by the norm was totally out of the window. "Let's get out of here chicka and leave the defender of the nerdy orphan boy alone to mull over it."

For a long moment, Faith ignored Snape with a sort of intensity that was really a whole new level of rudeness, even for him. He'd thrown threats around, though, and that wasn't something she really got excited about happening. She grinned at Mercy. "Oh, yeah. I mean, Bowie ain't as badass as Twisted Sister or whatever, but he didn't suck, for sure." She laughed at the description of Jareth's hair, honestly amused.

Finally, she turned her attention back to Snape. "How dare I? Shit, how dare I what? Watch a damn movie?" She turned to Mercy, her eyes widening. "Shit, girl, you just spoiled the ending! You mean it? I was never really sure about Snape, but he was protecting Harry the whole time!"

She reached out and pressed her hand to his chest. "I always figured Snape had a major thing for Harry's mom. That's why he always tries to protect Harry or whatever, you know? Or maybe it was Harry's dad, I mean, hey, I don't judge."

The Slayer removed her hand from Snape's chest and flashed him a bright smile. "Later, protecting Harry Potter guy!" She laughed, feeling like she'd gotten some sort of revenge on him, and nodded to Mercy. "Let's get the hell outta Dodge, we got shit to do that don't involve Skeletor here."

Snape continued to gape in wide-eyed astonishment at Mercy and Faith's words. He was, he would admit only to himself, a little spooked by their knowledge of his most personal feelings. Perhaps, he mused, this was how any historical personnage feels once their story has been told by the biographer, violated but also honoured. Nevertheless, the two women before him were not precisely treating the details of his story with the respect he felt they deserved. Faith's comment insinuating that he had long harboured a secret love for James Potter in particular enflamed his wrath, as thoughts of his one-time rival generally did.

By the time Snape had swiftly drawn his wand, the women were preparing to depart on their foolish journey. Inclined as he was to launch a full and justified assault against their vulnerable, naked bodies, he decided rather to let them go. They would find enough torment, he suspected, in the labyrinth.
