WHO:  The Unicorn/Amalthea [[info]the_unicorn] & Simon Tam [[info]fugitivedoctor]
WHEN: Day 9, morning
WHAT: Amalthea arrives in the underground just following her human transformation and confrontation with the Red Bull.
WHERE: Entrance to Illusion city
RATING: PG-13 for nudity.
STATUS: Complete

Every since they had left Captain Cully and his merry band of outlaws behind, the stench of sulfur and acid crept ever stronger in her nostrils. The scent of the Red Bull only grew stronger as the trio made their way closer to the town's of Hagsgate. In the distance, you could see the dark and looming castle that belonged to King Haggard. The unicorn paced through the town as Molly and Schmendrick spoke with some of the town's people and once they were done learning what they could it was off into the forest once again before they'd cross the last bit of land towards their destination.

She had counted three men in the darkness, they had followed them this far since they departed. The assassins were intent on doing away with the two humans, before they could reach Haggard and expose the town and their desire to do him in. When the three finally caught up to the Unicorn and the pair of humans, she had already slipped into the darkness to wait. Behind them, a terrible red glow had over taken Haggard's castle and was beginning to over take the dark night sky as if the sun was rising.

With Schmendrick throwing paralyzing ailments, Molly throwing her rocks, the Unicorn finally decided she had enough of waiting and reared out of her hiding place. She used her hooves to slash at the three men, before she bared her single glowing horn to frighten the men away. The assassins in fear dropped their daggers just as she challenged them with another rear. The assassins had another reason to flee, as her cry was answered with a deep rumble from behind. Haggard's castle was aglow with fire as the Red Bull emerged and came charging down the barren path towards the forest.

The unicorn had never known fear until she had come face to face with the red bull, the creature was older, stronger, and much larger than anything she had ever known ( even herself ). With panic setting in and her light dim, she fled into the forest. With the red bull close behind, it was as if the trees lunged at her to make her stop. Each stomp of the Bull's hooves could be felt through her bones, and just when she thought she had gotten ahead, the Red Bull was waiting and blocking her way. The Bull advanced slowly, steadily and with purpose. The unicorn afraid and powerless gave in with a sad cry and lowered her head as she realized she could go no further, only back. She ran back, with no other way to go ... she begun to run back towards Haggard's castle.

Do something! Please do something! It's not fair, it can't be happening. He'll drive her to Haggard, and no one will ever see her again, no one! Please, you're a magician, you won't let him. Do something! Molly wept as she clung to Schmendrick in hopes that he could possibly save the unicorn from her fate.

It happened as fast as the red bull appearing. Whatever magic, Schmendrick had called upon took to flight and wrapped the Unicorn in several brilliant shades of light. The blind red bull confused for moment reared back and kicked up dust and dirt in the wake of the release of energy. When the light settled and the dust begun to fall back towards earth, the giant bull sniffed at the ground before he gave out a giant roar. He took off into the tree's and back towards the Haggard's castle, the unicorn had completely vanished.

------

Somewhere, in the city appeared a young girl, sprawled out into a very small heap of light and shadow. She was naked, and her skin was the color of moonlight. Fine tangled hair, white as snow came down to cover the small of back. Her face was hidden away in her arms.

This uncertainty on her feet, this distress over where she was, these things brought clearly to Simon the memory of River coming out of cryo in Serenity's cargo hold. This fact alone endeared this strange young girl to him. His instincts kicking in, he wanted only to help, but, like that time all those months ago, he had to wait for her to calm down. So he watched, at first, moving out of her way as she took a few unsteadily steps, grabbing his coat off the ground. When she fell again, he knelt once more.

"I didn't bring you here," he said, shaking his head. "The king that lives on the other side of the Labyrinth, over in the castle -- he did this. But it seems to be safe here, so don't worry."

She was captivatingly beautiful, almost as if she shouldn't even exist. Still, Simon's first concern was for her well-being. "Please take this," he said, holding up the coat for her. "I'll be fine without it, and you need it more than I do right now."

The voice who responded to her question was not a familiar one, and a deeper sense of worry made her chest tremble as she looked backwards towards Simon. She stared at the young man with her wide eyes, he was not Schmendrick ... nor could she sense anything remotely magical about him. The unicorn realized it was she who had completely vanished from her land.

She looked away from Simon and the thing he was offering and lifted her hands out of the snow. She timidly began to touch her face, her fingers curled and brushed over the mark on her forehead. Her fingers recoiled from her own features before she let out a cry of loss and utter despair. "Schmendrick ... what have you done. I will die here!" Her fingers came down upon her white skin, nails tore at her smooth skin until they drew blood. Her words continued to repeat expressing a fear that her face did not show.

"The bull should have killed me... why didn't he let it kill me?" She sobbed without tears as she let her face fall into the cold snow beneath her.

He couldn't wait any longer for her to decide if she wanted help. Simon made the choice for her, draping his coat over her again and placing a hand on her back. Her shivers seemed to travel up through him, and he had to take a breath to clear his mind. He had to be a doctor now, responsible and decisive. He didn't understand what she was talking about, but he knew she needed help.

"Come on, let's clean up this blood and get you some clothes." Hands on her upper arms, he tried to help her stand, moving only when he was sure that she would. "I'll tell what I know about this city while we walk. Can you walk? Here, I'll help you."

She could feel the cold even more causing her skin to prickle and grow numb. There was a strange pain that came along with this numb feeling though, and beneath that the unicorn could feel her body slowly dying. It was a sensation that rocked her to her very core, and she continued to tremble as Simon lifted her upwards to her feet.

Once standing she begun to walk forward not concerned as to which way she went. It was obvious she still had the strength to walk, her steps did not wobble like before. She eased her feet down one by one into the snow gracefully. She dare not speak another word, not until she knew more.

She was very quiet, but Simon was prepared for this. He'd come across many a patient and family member who'd been unable to speak after hearing terrible news of some kind. He lead her to the clinic, slow and steady. She didn't seem to be hurt, so he didn't want to rush or frighten her.

"I've only been here for a few days, but so far it seems that this place is safe," he told her. "That over there, that's the Labyrinth, and on the other side of it is the castle where the king who brought us here is. King Jareth. There doesn't seem to be a real reason for him picking us, just... maybe he thinks it's a game."

The Unicorn allowed herself to be lead slowly along the snow covered streets and to the clinic. All around her she took in every little detail. This world was not like her own and yet she could sense something not entirely right with this place either. The skin that trapped her was doing wonders to dull her perception of the things around her.

The artificial light created by the bulbs above her head, sparked her curiosity for a few moments. She stared upward directly at the glow, longer than any normal human could possibly stand. Simon's words made their way into her head and she weighed the information silently. There was another King, and this one collected beings? How similar this King seemed to behave, like King Haggard.

Strange magic had occurred this evening, perhaps it hadn't been Schmendrick's fault she had been transformed in the first place. There was little way to know now, with the Wizard and Molly gone. She did hope they were all right and didn't worry too much about her sudden departure.

"A game? You call this a game, trapping me in a body like this?" She finally spoke out, fear still heavy in her voice. Her purple eyes moved away from the bright lights and looked out the nearest window towards the Labyrinth.

Now inside, Simon retrieved his med kit and pulled some simple first aid supplies from it. The young woman's wounds would require no more than cleaning and covering. He didn't altogether understand what she was saying, but what little he knew about this place was making him start to accept the fact that the unusual was to be expected, even if it didn't make sense.

"I certainly don't think being ripped out of my world is fun," he said, beginning to wipe the blood from her cheeks. "I'm sure we all feel trapped here and none of us are amused." He applied small bandages next, attached them with an adhesive that caused minimal discomfort upon removal, then offered her a clean, damp cloth with which to wipe her hands.

She did not flinch or blink or Simon cleaned and dressed the wounds she had given herself. Part of her wanted to continue to tear at her dying flesh, it was unbearably ugly in comparison to her true form. As each second ticked by, cells died and her body grew older. How did human beings possible stand being so ugly?

"They should have let the red bull take me, kill me, anything would be better than becoming a human." The cloth was ignored, she was still standing there dressed in only Simon's coat. The concept of clothes and cleaning one's hands were as foreign as this body.

"Might there be anyone in this kingdom besides it's King who knows true magic?" Her voice was full of desperation, she could only hope now that someone else was here who could return her to her true form.

She both looked and sounded so lost that Simon wished he had the answers she needed. "I don't know very many people here," he replied, "but I'd be willing to bet there's someone or another who knows some magic. They'll be able to help you more than I can. When you're taken to your room and given your journal -- which is sort of magical in itself, I suppose -- you'll be able to ask."

"Room? Journal?" The Lady let her eyes slowly close as she pondered the meaning of these human words. She knew room to be places in a building, Schemendrick often came back from gather food and money and spoke of rooms filled with wonderous items. A journal, well, she had never heard of anything of the like before.

She returned gazing out of the window and watched as a few new flakes of snow tumbled down from the sky. They met their doom upon the window pane, each one melting and trickling down the glass like tears.

She wasn't sure what else she could say, part of her had already decided that talking too much might draw more trouble than it was worth. Still, this human like Schemendrick and Molly seemed gentle hearted enough. "Thank you for your kindness."

Simon finished his work and began to pack his things away, throwing out those which could not be reused. At the very least, the young woman had calmed down. It was all he could hope for, really. He wasn't going to be much good for anything else. There was no question that he would try to help, especially considering how she'd reminded him of River.

"Anytime." He offered a gentle smile, and then he remembered they hadn't properly introduced himself. "My name is Simon, by the way."

The woman opened her lips to answer, and then suddenly closed her lips in confusion. She did not have a name, not as Molly, Schemendrick, or Simon did. She stood there quietly for some time, before she found herself surprised that something came to mind.

"Amalthea," unsure of where she heard it, the unicorn knew better than to explain what she was. Who would ever believe the story of a Unicorn being transformed into a human being? The name would do for now, perhaps it was a name of one of the many maidens fair who came to visit her long agoo.

He nodded, acknowledging the name, and no sooner had he done that than a goblin came in, ready to lead Amalthea to her dormitory. Simon offered her an apologetic smile, as if he could control any of this at all if he wanted, and shrugged. "If there's anything I can help you with, please let me know," he said. "I'll do what I can. Take care."

The Unicorn and the Goblin stared at one another for a few long seconds. Amalthea was not sure if she wanted to trust the little creature, as Goblins were prone to be tricksters and trouble makers.

"Oy oy ~ Dun' be lookin' at me like that. You have no powers stuck in that body Unicorn. Now follow me!"

Amalthea's features twisted for a brief moment. She seemed utterly repulsed that she was being spoken in such a manner, and in all her years no one had. She bid Simon farewell with a wave and followed the small Goblin back out into the snow fallen streets.

( Will mark it as complete unless you have something to add! )
