Entry tags:active, day eight, ianto jones, jack harkness, rose tyler

WHO: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, Rose Tyler
WHEN: Mid-Morning; Day Eight
WHAT: Collecting Rose and then going to the amusement park.
WHERE: Rose's Room, then the amusement park.
RATING: Jack!rating
STATUS: Incomplete

At least Ianto was on board for this. Reluctant, but on board. Besides, it was an amusement park and while he'd been there with Rose the day before, Jack didn't have the time to actually explore. And, most importantly, ride the rides. There was a roller coaster he had his eye on and couldn't wait to try it out. However, one didn't ride rides all alone -- so much better when with a group.

While she had said she was spending time in the TARDIS, Jack still swung by her assigned dorm first, hoping he'd get lucky on the first go. Grinning manically at Ianto, Jack knocked twice on the door.

"Open up! We're going to the amusement park!" Jack glanced at Ianto, attempting to look abashed. "All right, so some people get knocks. You're just lucky."

Desperately, Rose pulled her pillow over her head, trying to drown out Jack's far too happy tone. How could he be so perky? How could anyone be perky, knowing what she did. All she'd done was kipped outside for a spell to see the damned snow everyone had been talking about. She'd only been gone ten minutes, fifteen at the most. How was he gone? How in the bloody hell could he be gone?

And with him, the TARDIS, meaning Rose was once again in this prison cell of a room. While it wasn't a bad place, really, it wasn't home. For a couple of blissful days, life had felt perfect. Just the night before, she'd never felt more loved in her entire life. And now? Dammit!

Tears were still streaming down her cheeks as she peered out from under the blankets. She hadn't pulled herself out of bed since she'd arrived back in the unwelcoming dorm room. "Go away!" she begged, unwilling to see any sort of connection to the man she'd loved so desperately for so long, and yet lost over and over.

"I think we'd be having a rather different conversation right now if you woke her the way you woke me," Ianto said smoothly, adjusting nonexistent rumples in the long winter coat he'd found waiting for him.

"Oh, too bad, looks like they're not coming out to play." His inherent distrust of the Doctor, based on his limited personal experience and vast Torchwood-London-inspired readings thereof, extended to the Doctor's companion, too. "I'll just go get you your coffee, sir, and then I have some things to do today."

Jack attempted a look of innocence that might have worked had it not have settled on his face. As it was, he looked impish rather than angelic. "I have danced with her during the London Blitz in the '40s," Jack pointed out. "It wouldn't be fair if you were the only one to get the pouncing. She, however, might have someone else with her and he... probably wouldn't appreciate the same wakeup call."

Reaching out, Jack grabbed onto Ianto's arm before he could go away. "As much as I'd kill for a cup of coffee, you're not leaving. And we're going to the amusement park. I promised you a date, did I not?" he asked. Once more, Jack pounded on the door. "Rose, open the door now or I swear to god, I'll kick it in."

God, did he have to be so bloody irritating? She'd kill him one day. Wait--that wouldn't work as a threat anymore, would it? Even better. She could kill him and not feel guilty about it. "What part of go the hell away don't you understand?" she yelled again, this time with as much anger as she could muster. And, at that point, Rose didn't have much anger left in her. Hurt, yes. Fear, definitely. Confusion? Absolutely. But anger was in that far reserve of her mind.

It didn't really help that it sounded like he wasn't alone. She knew she looked like hell right then. She hadn't even bothered to change into pajamas as she'd returned to the cold room, closing herself in and covering her head with the blanket. "Please," she whispered, even though there wasn't any chance he'd hear her, "just...go away."

Why yes, Jack did have to be so damned irritating. It was all part of the Jack Harkness charm and appeal, irritation was secondary all part of the package. "The go, the hell, and the away," Jack replied, getting more than annoyed he had to yell through the door to speak to Rose. This was not going to last long, not if Jack had any say in it. Besides, he couldn't understand why she was telling him to go away.

Jack didn't pay attention to words like 'leave me alone'. They didn't exist in his vocabulary.

Grumbling under his breath, Jack was forced to release Ianto in favour of getting enough space to kick open the door. One well placed boot right above the door knob sent the door flying open and into the room. Pausing, Jack tested the handle, finding that it turned without resistance. Right. Sotry opening the door before going for the bravado. Jack flicked on a light and crossed his arms in front of his chest, looking at the bubble on the bed. "Rise and shine, Rose Tyler. Get your ass out of bed and let's go."

"Dammit to hell, Jack!" Rose sat up, glaring, her hair tangled in her face and said face red and tear-streaked. "When I ask you to go the hell away, it'd do you a bit of good to listen!"

Let's go? Go where? She wasn't leaving. Not if things could be snatched away from her so damn quickly. Why get close to anyone if she could just lose them? Again! If she'd thought she'd been miserable on that damned Norwegian beach, she'd been sadly mistaken.

"I swear to everything holy if you don't get the hell out of here now I'll... I'll..." God, why did words pick the most inopportune times to fail her? "Please, Jack..." No, Rose most certainly was not begging. Pleading, perhaps, but not begging. She shot the man at Jack's side a brief but interested look before climbing back under the covers, pulling the pillow back over her reluctant head.

"And you should know better than to expect me to listen," Jack shot back. He moved further into the room, wondering briefly what Ianto was making of this whole situation. This was far from the first meeting Jack had hoped to show Ianto, which begged the question of why Rose was so damned distraught. He could think of no reason that would have sent her into such a state and the notion of the Doctor gone never once crossed his mind.

Jack stopped by her bed, arms crossed once more and glowering down at her. This really wasn't how Ianto was supposed to meet Rose. At all.

"You'll do what?" Jack asked, rolling his eyes. "Really. Do tell me what you'll do. We've already had the 'I can't die' conversation." Sighing when she covered her head with the covers, Jack shifted to the end of the bed, roughly pulling the covers down and away from Rose. "No hiding. Up. Get dressed. We're going out and no, you're not changing my mind on this. Roller coasters await and the three of us are taking advantage of this if it kills me."

At which point Jack laughed.

He couldn't die, no, but he could feel pain. And his laughter and his determination to have fun earned Jack a well-deserved slap across the face. "You idiot!" Rose all but screamed, not giving a damn about the other man in the room any longer. All she knew was she was in pain and Jack's grin wasn't helping her one bit. "You selfish, conceited, self-absorbed idiot! Do you not even see?"

How could he not, she had to wonder. How could he not know? Sure, it was snowing out and who would take the trek out to where the blue police call box had once stood if they didn't have to? But the fact that she was there should have said enough. Who in any galaxy would pick these cold, barren walls instead of the comforting warmth of the TARDIS? Who would choose to sleep alone in this strange world instead of inside a world of familiarity with the man who always, always took care of her sleeping down the hall?

"I don't give a damn if you can die or not," she told him sharply, glancing up at the other man. "Hi, I'm Rose, pleasure to meet you, you must be Ianto, sorry about all this." That bit was blabbered out in a rush, and she turned back to fix Jack with a menacing glare. "But I can and it feels like I'm damn well going to so if you wouldn't mind going to hell and leaving me alone, I'd appreciate it."

Ianto, sighing in a most put-upon manner, had stepped back, folded his arms across his chest, and watched the door go flying. Predictable, really. Present a well-meaning hothead with a flimsy door and refuse to come out when he demands it, and what do you think it's going to get you? Ianto leaned against the doorframe and observed the scene.

All right, so Rose was little more than a teenager. A pretty, blonde, sobbing teenager that Jack wouldn't shut up about. Connected to the Doctor, no less. Oh yeah, this wasn't something to be worried about. This was exactly what a great day out needed as its foundations. Right.

"Charmed," Ianto said, reaching out to shake her hand exactly once. Then he mirrored her menacing glare at Jack. "First, I don't ride roller coasters and second, I don't feel like babysitting your jailbait. If you'll excuse me, I have some further reconnaissance to do on the outer edges of the labyrinth. Good day sir." And a nod at Rose without actually looking at her. "Nice to meet you too, I'm sure."

And Jack bloody well wondered why Ianto resisted the seduction. One morning of abandoned frottage brought forth the bleeding apocalypse in the form of an inconsolable blonde. Who Jack had probably shagged already. Damn it.

This officially was not how the morning was supposed to go at all. Jack's perfectly laid plans (and, for that matter, fantastic morning) were on the verge of being completely ruined. He, however, was not about to let any of this go down without a fight. There was a reason he'd been the last man standing so many years ago.

"See what, Rose?" Jack barked back. "I see you here. Do tell me what I'm missing as, unlike some people, I'm not a damned mind reader!" Oh how he wish he were, though. Would make some things so much easier. "I'm at a bit of a loss, Rose, so you're going to have to fill in a couple gaps here."

And then Rose noticed Ianto and things seemed to go down hill from there, as if that were even possible at this point. Suddenly he found himself at the centre of twin glares and Jack held up his hands in a mock sign of surrender. "You," he said, pointing at Rose, "should know that I don't listen well and you are going to tell me what's going on and why you're taking whatever happened out on me."

Jack turned and looked at Ianto now, this time pointing in his direction. "As for you." He paused, finger still poised in the air. "Wait. Jailbait?" Jack wisely bit back the comment that Rose wasn't much younger than Ianto himself. "That's not... this is Rose. Not... whatever the hell you're thinking and you are going to the amusement park. All three of us, even if I have to toss you over my shoulders and carry you."

Rose yanked herself to her feet at Ianto's declaration of her being jailbait, quite bitter at the very idea that she was just another bint on Jack's scorecard. "I don't know who the hell you think you are," she snapped, pulling herself up to her full height, "but you're out of line. For one, I'm nearly twenty-four, hardly jailbait!" Pushing her hair out of her face, she pointed one finger in his face, looking eerily like Jack as she did so. "And I'm sure as hell not Jack's jailbait."

Though she could've been at one point. Maybe. If it hadn't been for the Doctor's protective nature and possible possessiveness. And all that did was dredge up a fresh wave of hurt running through her as she spun on her heel to glare at Jack again. "I'm not going anywhere. I've told you. Do you not... Jack, you moron, I... He's... Again! I swear to God, I can't do this!"

And a brand new stream of tears started up and she turned to face the wall, refusing to let a stranger, even one Jack trusted as much as he did, to see her so completely weak and vulnerable.

"Oh right. It can't be jailbait, it's Rose," Ianto deadpanned. "And I agreed to escort you to the amusement park, I did not agree to be flown at by an hysterical young who--" he ran a critical eye over her-- "doesn't look a day over 20. You have good skin."

And back to Jack: "She's crying again. Quite incoherent. Sobbing, angry women is more your department than mine, I think? You'll have to determine-- She... Who's... Again! without my assistance." He glanced back to Rose. "With no offense meant. Please, take my handkerchief." He pulled the navy square of cloth out of his inner pocket and handed it over to the young woman as something of a peace offering.

On the other hand, it was kind of satisfying seeing someone else put it to Jack like this. Lust-worthy or not, the man's ego needed this sometimes.

What the fuck? Jack slowly rotated his head back and forth between soon-to-be-lover and Doctor's-Companion and tried to resist the urge of beating his head against something hard. At least there was no worry about causing permanent damage, now was there? Still. For crying out loud, this was not the way things were supposed to go, nor were Rose and Ianto supposed to be at each other's throats AND hopping down his own at the same time. Had he expected there to be tension between the Doctor and Ianto? Yes. This? No fucking way.

"If anyone's jailbait--" Jack broke off quickly changing that subject before he wound up in any more trouble than he already was. "You both have good skin. End of discussion."

Somehow, though, Jack began to make heads and tails of the situation. He didn't find it exceedingly odd that Rose was here in the dorms (as he hadn't been invited to the comfortable TARDIS) but now, oh now things were making sense. Jack moved towards Rose, putting a hand on her shoulder, yet glancing at Ianto as if to say 'comforting, nothing else.' "I... I didn't know," Jack said softly, gently squeezing her shoulder. "I figured to get you and then we'd get him. I didn't.."

Jack sighed, looking at Ianto. "Don't even say anything," he warned, "but the Doctor's gone." Gaze shifting back to Rose, he tugged her away from the wall and to look back into the room. "Which is why we're going out of here. Even if I have to carry you over my shoulder and you," he pointed at Ianto, "are coming with us."

Hesitantly, Rose accepted the handkerchief, impressed anyone their age (as Ianto couldn't have been much older than she was) carried one at all. Most blokes she knew, even the Torchwood ones, found the sleeve of their shirt sufficient enough. "Thanks," she said softly, but she didn't use it. Instead, she merely wound it in her hands, taking comfort in having something to do with her hands that didn't involve slapping Jack.

What she really wanted to do was mold herself into that comforting hug she knew as Jack's. But, even distressed, Rose knew that was probably the worst thing she could do. Jack liked this guy, as stuffy and snot-faced as he might seem, and apparently the bloke was a jealous type. Seeing a man he mostly-fancied holding a vulnerable woman was not an attractive feature, she knew.

So instead, Rose nodded at Jack's words, biting her lip to the point of pain and just beyond it. "I don't know... Jareth, probably. Something to do with... Anyway." She shrugged, feeling helpless. "Honestly, Jack, do I look like I'd be any fun to be around today? You two go have fun." She gave him a weak nudge with her elbow, as if to playfully say 'you don't need me for what you have in mind'. But as pathetic as it was, it probably looked more like, 'get out of my room so I can spend the day in tears'.

Ianto rolled his eyes-- sometimes he was surprised that he didn't give himself eye strain around Jack. "'You both have good skin'? That's your bridge-building initiative? I can see why you're the leader of our ragtag band of rebels."

All right, so maybe his words didn't have to drip with quite so much sarcasm, and he decided to lighten it up just a little as Jack let him in on the Doctor's disappearance. All right, he might have muttered "Typical" under his breath, but that was just who he was.

He glanced back at the tearful, overwrought blonde. And then his fucking chivalry kicked in. This was all his mother's fault-- if she hadn't raised him so well he could have just said 'Right then, see ya!' Instead, he reached out and placed what he hoped was a reassuring hand on the girl's shoulder. "Listen. It's... an amusement park, purported to inspire amusement in those who attend it. And as I do not intend on going on any rides with Jack, he'll need an escort. Come on, I can hold your coats while the two of you ride."

The fact that Ianto carried a pocket square was one of the many reasons Jack loved the man. Because it was so... him. Face it, Jack needed a man who was as classic as he was in many regards. "Yes, that's my bridge-building initiative. And I'm still the leader because no one has wanted to challenge me to a naked wrestling match," he pointed out. The sarcasm rolled off Jack's shoulders. If he wasn't used to it by now, god help him.

That was most difficult thing about this entire situation. Ianto was assuming Rose was Jack's current 'jailbait' and to wrap her in a hug like he wanted to would only confirm that. And yet, all Jack wanted to do was to wrap his arms around her and make things be okay. Jack smiled when Ianto approached Rose and took that as a cue to slide a hand around her waist, gently squeezing. He was close enough that his other hand could reach out and brush Ianto's hip reassuringly. Really, sometimes being Jack could be a bitch.

"Oh, you are going on rides, Ianto," Jack said with a grin. "Because standing and holding coats is decidedly not what one does at an amusement park." Jack nudged Rose with her hip. "Come on. Doesn't matter. You're coming with us and that's the end of it because I'll be damned if I'm going to let you stay in your room and feel sorry for yourself."

How she could love and hate someone so much at one time had never made any sense to Rose, but it was growing more and more common. There'd been many times she'd felt as much towards the Doctor, and now Jack, too. Why couldn't he just leave things alone? Why couldn't he accept the fact that her heart had been ripped out not just once but twice?

"Jack, I--" But he was smiling that infuriating grin and Ianto was actually trying to make amends and... Sighing, she shrugged and forced a tiny smile. "You know if you stick this poor bloke on a ride that makes him puke, he's probably not going to find you quite as attractive." As innocent as she tried to look, Rose still flashed a mischievous look in Ianto's direction. What the hell. If she couldn't be happy, someone should.

Moving towards the closet, which still paled in comparison to the huge wardrobe of the TARDIS, she examined the winter selections and pulled out a huge coat. Of course, most of the cold she was feeling at the moment was internal not external but... Well, it was a start. She tossed on a scarf, too, and turned to face the boys in the room. "Don't worry," she attempted to reassure Ianto. "I won't let him put you on the Barfmaster 4000 or whatever Jareth's got set. Hate to ruin that outfit of yours."

Ianto instinctively half-smiled back at Rose's mischievous expression. Damnit, why did he always like the trouble-makers?

"The Barfmaster 4000. Delightful. Jack, you will procure for me candy floss and very greasy pizza, and I will not go on rides. However you will go on rides and you will make this young lady smile." Yes, he was aware he sounded like he was sixty instead of Rose's age. "Are we clear?"

He zipped up his own parka and offered an arm to Rose. "Do you like the suit? It's surprisingly well-tailored given the circumstances. Shall we?"

Something dramatic had happened within the past two minutes and Jack was utterly puzzled as to what had brought it about. Rose and Ianto... were acting like best friends of eighty years suddenly. Not that Jack minded, he simply wondered what he had missed to bring about such a sudden and dramatic change. It made no sense to him in the slightest.

"Don't think there's a greasy spoon around here like Jubilee," Jack replied, "but I'll see what I can do." Jack threw a glare in Rose's direction. She was supposed to be on his side, not warning Ianto about roller coasters. Of course the ones with the large drops were the best to go on. Duh.

"What can I say, the man looks good in a suit," Jack said, giving Ianto a slow once over, like he'd never seen him in such dress before. "I'll make Rose smile and you, you old codger," Jack teased. With Rose on Ianto's arm, he could either move in close to Ianto or Rose, but not both. Such choices. In the end, he held open the door, bowing gallantly to let the pair pass. "One amusement park, coming right up." Jack fell into step beside Rose as they wound their way to the park, moving quickly enough so that Rose couldn't change her mind at the last possible minute.

"So," Jack said, rubbing his chin and surveying the park. "Where to start? Something easy or..." He pointed to one of the large coasters. "The big deal and work our way backwards to the easy ones?"

Rose accepted the offered arm gratefully, mostly because she needed something to lean on. And something to make sure she didn't turn tail and run. And now that she had her mind made up, years of built up determination were surfacing, and she didn't want to fall into her post-Canary Wharf self again.

That and there was an adorable bloke on her arm who happened to be quite into the very sexy bloke on her other side and damn if Rose wasnt one with a penchant for matchmaking. Ianto would've been blind to have missed the once over Jack had given him, and the tiniest of grins flickered over Rose's face. "Always did find men in suits dashing. Course, men in uniform aren't too shabby either," she told Jack, glancing up at him with a wrinkle of her nose. "Wonder what the two would look like if you put them together..."

She let her voice purposely drift off as she let the pair do the mental imaging for themselves. No need for her there! Refusing to let her eyes drift towards the rides she'd ridden only the night before, she nodded towards the candy floss. "I believe," she said, an air of bossiness creeping into her voice, "the gentleman asked you for sweets, Captain."

And if he was full of sugary sweetness, maybe Jack wouldn't force him on anything resembling a Barfmaster 4000 or whatever they'd dubbed it. She did have everyone's best interests at heart, after all.

Well, she seemed an all right lass, when various fluids weren't pouring out of various facial orifices. He placed his hand over hers where it rest on his arm-- a friendly and comforting gesture, and one that precluded Jack from taking his other arm. Lusting after the man he may be, but Ianto was also not skipping down the Yellow Brick Road with Dorothy on one arm and the Tin Man on the other.

"Either Jack asked you to say so or else you have a bit of a devious streak," he said, patting her hand lightly. "Has he also informed you that he thinks he can just slip into anyone's trousers without so much as buying him dinner first?" He shot Jack a smirk. "I'm an old-fashioned bloke, Rose."

He followed her gaze toward the candy floss, and then turned his head smartly to his boss. "I'd like blue, please, Jack, and then we'll negotiate a carousel ride, all right?"

Very, very softly, Jack huffed. Old fashioned bloke in deed. And, for Jack, he'd done this once before. He still remembered the nerves when he asked Ianto out the first time. That had been, well, downright nerve-wracking. Didn't help that their date that time had been interrupted by a crowd of Weevils. The thought of doing this again... wasn't any easier the second time around. Because, damn, it actually mattered when it came to Ianto.

"I did no such thing when it came to prepping her beforehand," Jack said, adopting his best innocent look. "And I do not just... assume. I know. But that's also beside the point at hand." Really, really far beside t he point. "And I have a feeling I'm not getting anything out of either of you until there's floss to be hand." Heading towards the stand, Jack paid for two cones, handing them over to his two charges. And, just to be cheeky, stole a bit from both Ianto and Rose.

"Now. as far as this carousel ride -- if we start there, I get the choice of one coaster, promising that I won't do anything too out of the ordinary. Do we have a deal?"

Candy floss wouldn't have been Rose's first choice. A girl in her current situation deserved chocolate. Her mum would've known that. Hell, he would've known that. But Jack's first concern was and should be Ianto, and if Ianto was eating the frothy candy, so would she. After all, sugar was sugar and sugar was comfort food.

However, she didn't protest when Jack stole a bite, but rather smile and allowed a piece to melt on her tongue before looking at Ianto with an interested expression. "Sweetie, I don't know how much time changes a man, but I also know that for the most part? Jack has been able to slip into anyone's trousers without dinner first." Leaning in, she whispered conspiratorally into Ianto's ear, "good for you for making him earn it!"

Stepping back, she smiled up at Jack with an innocent expression as she eyed the carousel. "Sounds fair enough to me. But I get to choose the coaster. You're not putting this man on anything with deathly, gravity-defying loops and drops, got it?"

"He does need to be reminded that he is not, in fact, the centre of the known and unknown universe,"Ianto agreed, maintaining the conspiratorial whisper. And to Jack: "Prat," as he snatched the candy floss away from Jack before his boss could steal another bite. The thought of biting straight into the sugary confection was beyond Ianto's impeccable manners, and he gently transferred Rose's hand from his arm to Jack's.

"Just temporarily," he said to her with a slightly shy smile, before demonstrating why he needed both hands-- holding the cone in one and plucking polite bits of floss with the other before transferring it to his mouth. "And Jack, you should listen to the woman. She talks sense. Large amounts of it, in fact. All right, carousel. Giddy ponies riding up and down, like in Mary Poppins without them coming to life and taking off to the races." He glanced around. "Although in this place, one can never be too sure..."

"I heard that," Jack muttered to them both, though what he had heard was anyone's guess. Here he was trying to play the gallant host and was being mocked mercilessly for it. Though, really, it wasn't like he should have been surprised, was it? He may have complained but it was one of the reasons he loved Ianto and Rose as much as he did -- and would do anything to keep them both happy. "Prat?" Jack asked. He snatched another bite of the floss just to spite him. Yes, Jack was an ass at times.

At times, dammit. Only at times. Not always.

Jack, however, didn't hear the 'temporarily' bit, else there would have been a triumphant smirk on his face. As it was, he was navigating them both through the food stands and towards the carousel. The thought of chocolate for Rose wasn't in his mind though the gay male part of him should have known. It was the part-heterosexual male that was painfully oblivious. "In this place I wouldn't put it past them," Jack agreed. "Though, really, could always just sit with you in one of the sleighs if you're going to be scared," Jack challenged. He shot Rose a look. "I'm not going to put him on anything like that, Rose." Beat pause. "Yet."

"Aw, how sweet, you two can snog merrily in the baby sleigh while I gallavant across this bloody mad world we're living in." Okay, so maybe Rose wasn't completely healed of the snarky and sarcastic nature. But in all fairness, most people would agree she deserved to still be a bit angry at the world.

However, on the other hand, it was sort of an amusing idea. And she had always loved that movie. "How fun would that be?" she questioned, looking them both over before taking a bite of her own floss. "I mean, I'm only in if it ends in a race where I'm wearing a frothy white dress and, you know, win." She walked backwards towards the carousel, facing them both.

Ianto was actually sort of interesting to watch when he ate sweets. He was possibly the most polite bloke their age she'd ever met. Mickey would've scarfed it down already and then stolen half of hers. Not to mention he'd have walked around with his hand on her arse versus offering an arm. Oh, she liked this bloke. Quite a bit, actually. If Jack hurt this one, she was pretty sure she'd kill him. And then kill him a second time just because she could. "Don't you dare, Jack Harkness," she warned him, holding up a finger menacingly. "I still remember how to make you scream like a little girl and you wouldn't want me to do so in front of Ianto here, would you?"
