Day Eight
WHO: Nymphadora Tonks and Marcus Cole
WHAT: Christmas!
WHEN: Day 8, morning
WHERE: Their room
WARNINGS: TBA
STATUS: Complete

There had been no warning, really. Last night, the weather had been totally different. It hadn't even been that cold. But in the morning, the witch awoke shivering, burrowing closer to her lover in the bed. But the damage had been done, she realized. She was up now, damn it. Normally, she would be asleep for several hours more, but it just wasn't happening. So, with a soft sigh, she rolled out of bed, careful to let Marcus sleep.

Moments later, than plan was completely out the window. Tonks had gone over to check what was going on, and saw the snow drifts around. She blinked, and then cast her gaze around the room. Two stockings, even a Christmas tree, for crying out loud. She grinned widely as she saw all this. Okay, yeah, so normally she would have been annoyed that her room had been messed with, but this, this was obviously Christmas! She'd always had a soft spot for that holiday.

Quickly, getting into the festive season, she changed her hair to a bright red, adding green streaks, and she was good to go. She didn't bother getting dressed, and stayed in her pajamas, but did take a moment to check out her ever-changing body. She hadn't noticed much to this point, but all of a sudden, like a christmas gift, she looked at her stomach and saw that she actually was going to have a baby.

This pretty much lifted her mood, which was already high, right into the clouds. Bouncing, she moved over to the bed and pounced on Marcus, straddling his body and gazing down into his face. "Marcus, Marcus, wake up! It's Christmas!"

Marcus had been sleeping soundly, dreaming of vast oceans full of fish, when he was suddenly pounced upon by his excited lover. Coming immediately to alert wakefulness, he tried to sit upright, part of him suspecting a vampire attack. When he saw the festive decorations and a beaming beauty before him, he relaxed back onto his elbows and smiled. It really did look like Christmas, only not the Christmases he had known on Arisa, but Christmases as they appeared in pictures from Earth. On Arisa, they had marked the holiday, but in name only, for the most part. They hadn't been able to afford to import any extra trappings.

"Christmas? Is it really? That's wonderful! Not as wonderful as you, of course, but still... It's got you excited, hasn't it?"

He gazed around at the decorations, taking it all in. The tree was real, he noticed. He'd never seen that before, and there appeared to be stockings hung from the mantle over the fireplace, stockings that appeared to be stuffed with lumpy things. A very tasty smell was wafting on the air. All in all, it was very pleasant.

It was probably just as well that Tonks had no idea Marcus had thought she was a vampire at first. She'd had a bit of a strained conversation with Schuldig, and really, wasn't feeling particularly charitable toward vampires just at the moment. Not that she had been before, since, after all, Marcus had been attacked by one. But she was blissfully unaware, and just beamed down at her lover.

"Yes, it's Christmas! I used to love this stuff..." Actually, she'd never really stopped loving it, and her beaming, open face was clear enough evidence of that. "Oh! And look!" She lifted her nightshirt so that he could see her stomach, which was rounded out noticably for the first time. "It's so weird, it was like it happened overnight!"

She kissed him, then reluctantly crawled off him to let him up. "There's stockings! And a tree!" She hopped out of bed, meaning to run around the room showing him everything, but instead tripped over the edge of an area rug, and almost fell. This didn't concern her overly much, of course. She was used to it.

Marcus smiled, unable to not love the wonderful creature in the room with him. This Christmas thing had really gotten to her, and it was endearing. Her love of the holiday was clear, and she was too excited to have planned all of this herself. Was it really Christmas, or was this just Jareth's whim? He rather suspected the latter, since the Earth calendar didn't have much meaning here, if the King was even familiar with it.

"Did you really? Who'd have thought? It really is amazing!" He saw the stomach bulge she was showing him. "Oh, my! That is definately noticeable!"

Once she had gotten off of him (and the bed) and started around the room, Marcus threw off his blankets and swung his legs out of bed. He winced when Tonks stumbled, but he was almost used to it by now. Rising, he followed her, examining the decorations with fascination. What was that heavenly smell?

Rising to her feet, she rushed over to the table, which held two stockings. One was bright pink with shocking green stripes, and had her name embroidered on it. It couldn't be any more perfect for her. Marcus' was a more classical design, red, green, and white stripes. Collecting both of them, she rushed over to the bed again, without major incident.

"I wanna see what we got!" She'd been the kid on Christmas morning who had been waiting up since at least 5 am, waiting for everyone else to wake up. Seating herself cross-legged on the bed, she beamed at him as she reached into her stocking, pulled out a candy cane, colored brightly in pink and purple.

"Brilliant..." Soon, she had the thing emptied on the bed. Nuts, candy (most of it from the wizard world, pumpkin pasties, chocolate frogs, and the like), and something that she didn't immediately recognize. She noticed it had a plug, and found an outlet. Soon, the bubbles inside the strange container were moving around in a way that was almost hypnotic. Tonks watched, wide-eyed. She'd never seen a lava lamp before.

Marcus was so delighted by his lover's animated energy that he almost didn't care what was in the stockings. It was enough fun just watching Tonks rush about with a huge grin on her face. He had to admit, though, he was a bit curious. Accepting the stuffed, knitted footwear, he pulled out items one at a time and appreciated each one. Much of it was fruit, nuts, and candies, along with fun knick-knacks, like a Chinese finger-trap and a clown-head the eyes of which bulged out when it was squeezed. He avoided candy, as a general rule, but decided to make an exception for Christmas, putting the striped cane in his mouth.

"Well, this is delightful! Do you know I never got a stocking, as a kid? Never had fresh fruit, either."

He tossed an orange in one hand. Of course, he had had lots of fresh fruit since coming to Mirage and now Jareth's city, but he imagined what it would have been like to receive all of these treats as a child. He was very definitely moved. He looked over to appreciate what Tonks had got.

"What do you suppose that is for? Does it open?"

Tonks stood in her night shirt, holding a wrapped chocolate frog, looking at the lava lamp thoughtfully. "I don't think it does anything... I think it just is." She couldn't seem to tear her eyes away from it, though. It caught her eyes and held them. She was pretty sure she'd never seen anything quite like it in her entire life, and she found it fascinating.

She unwrapped the chocolate frog, which did its best to jump away from her, but she expertly held it and bit off its head. Hearing the whimsy in Marcus' voice, she turned back to him smiling widely. "Oh, that's so sad! I always had stockings, though it was better if my dad made them. My mum always put things like potpourri in. Boring stuff, you know?"

The witch finished her chocolate frog, then walked over to the bed and settled down next to Marcus. She cuddled close to him and rested her head on his shoulder. "Well, Happy Christmas, even if I didn't know it was going to be. Sorry, love, I didn't get you anything."

Marcus contentedly put his arm around the witch he loved. This was truly a delightful way to wake up, though he could see why one wouldn't want to do it more than once a year. He loved the treats and the decorations, but most of all he loved sharing it with Tonks. He watched her lava lamp, curiously mesmerized.

"Yes. Happy Christmas to you, too. Don't worry about it. I didn't know it was coming either. Of course, in a way we have both gotten something for each other." He put a gentle hand on the slight bulge in the young witch's belly. "I don't weep for my past. I didn't know what I was missing. Now I've got it, I don't have to feel bad either. And now that I know what it can be like, I can help try to replicate it every year after this, for junior."

He smiled at her, completely refusing to think about the possibility that they would someday have to be split, have to live in different worlds, in different times. As far as he was concerned, this was where he wanted to be, with Tonks, and their child. The Shadow War and his Ranger responsibilities somehow seemed less important in light of his new responsibilities as a father.

For a moment, she just nuzzled against him, and then raised her gaze to meet his. Her dark eyes were sparkling with delight, and she was clearly loving this Christmas thing. She always had, of course. It was her sort of holiday, even if it was completely unexpected.

She grinned and rested her hand on top of his, looking down at her stomach with intense curiousity. All the changes going on inside her were fascinating, and could absorb her for hours. What was going on with the tiny life inside her? What did it look like? All these questions, and more, could occupy her for quite some time. "It's a really brilliant Christmas present, yeah."

She let her fingers wind into his, and smiled, just plain content with everything. Christmas, the man she loved, and the baby that they had made together. Yes, things could be better, they could not have to leave eventually. But that, she could deal with later.

Marcus spent a happy moment or two just sitting with Tonks. She was happy. He was happy. He could only assume their half-formed offspring was as happy as it could be. One thing he was not, however, was tired. In fact, Christmas had been such a wonderful way to wake up, he could hardly wait to see whether it was a wonderful way to view the rest of the town. He wondered if their neighbours were enjoying the holiday as much as he and Tonks were.

"Say, I have a wonderful idea. Let's go for a walk. A Christmas morning walk in the snow. We'll take some of those cinnamon cookies over there and some of that hot cocoa and head out to bring joy to our fellow castaways. What do you say?"

He held Tonks hand and looked into her eyes, his own eyes twinkling. It really had not taken him long to get into the spirit of the thing.

Tonks grinned and immediately stood up. In all honesty, she couldn't think of a better way to spend this Christmas morning. And she had far too much energy to sit around here much longer, even if it was nice to cuddle with her lover.

"Yes! Let's find Snape and try to cheer him up!" She giggled at that idea, and then tripped over to the plate of cookies. "I used to go for walks on Christmas all the time, me and my mum and my dad. My dad didn't even care if my hair was odd colours, and we ran into one of his muggle friends. He still was just as proud of me as ever."

She turned back to face him, then waved her wand so that the plate of cookies followed her around obediantly. As someone who tripped frequently, it was just the smart thing to do to have a charm that could carry things for her. "Alright, I've got the cookies! Are you ready, love?" She pulled on a big, thick, warm robe as she spoke.

Marcus sprang to his feet, motivated by Tonks' enthusiasm. Admiring her intelligence in using the carrying charm, he grabbed the jug of cocoa and a stack of paper cups. "Ready!" Looking out the window at the snow, he knew that he would need a rather warm outfit as well. His Ranger uniform was designed to withstand both hot and cold environments, but it didn't seem festive enough. Finally, he settled on a black wool coat he found in his closet.

"Snape? Good Lord! Well, I suppose we can try. I'm sure we'll have a good time, even if we fail. What's not to love about this?"

Putting his arm around his beautiful, beaming lover, Marcus opened the door and strode out into the festive winter wonderland that had been laid before them. He wondered what this all said about their host.
