WHAT: Going through the Labyrinth
WHEN: Day Seven, Dawn
WHERE: The Labyrinth
RATING: Given that Buffy's going, could be R
STATUS: Complete
NOTES: I'll adjust the posting order as people tag in

Caspian had never thought himself much of a leader. He didn't have the self-confidence, he believed, to take up the position and be effective. But, time and again, he was put in the position of authority, and time and again, he rose to the challenge, his yearning to do what was right outweighing his trepidations about his capability.

And so when it fell to him to lead this ragamuffin group through the labyrinth, he prepared for the journey as best as he could. While he was under the impression that every journey through the maze was different, fraught with dangers unlike the ones laid out before, he spoke to those he could about what would befall the group, and took it all into account. There was also the subject of provisions, as the journey could take days, even weeks to complete. That was a harder task to undertake, but from the three packs at his feet, it was fairly clear that Caspian had done all he could to ensure that, at the very least, the group would not starve.

So now, all the young king could do was wait, sitting on a low wall near the entrance, watching the sun rise over the changed city - which he really didn't have the mental capacity to ponder at the moment - and watched for his companions to arrive.

It took every ounce of self control that Caspian had in him to not respond to the chorus of comments. Buffy, perhaps, could be able to defend herself, but the princess and the little witch? Not likely. All it would take would be for something to knock that stick from her hand, and then where would she be? Defenseless and vulnerable, and either himself or Legolas was at risk for injury in the attempt to protect her. Really, all he wanted to do at that point was to leave the womenfolk behind. They were going to be far more trouble than they were worth.

After massaging his forehead for a moment, Caspian shouldered his packs, and without a word, began to lead the way into the labyrinth. Hermione's demonstration, however, had his jaw clenching as he looked at her, his face akin to her having just run over his dog. "Don't do that," he said in a low, clipped voice. "That tree was alive. It had independent thought, and family, and friends. And you just killed it," he said, pressing his hand to the heart of the tree for a moment, his eyes closed. Maybe things weren't the same here, but in Narnia, the trees had been his friends.

Without sparing her another look, Caspian headed off into the labyrinth. This was not the way to start a quest. They were treading on unsteady ground now.
