When: Day 6
Where: The Ren Faire
Rating: PG-13 for Chinese Cursing
Status: Complete

Wash sat comfortably in front of Serenity's navigation console, he watched the flashing lights tick away as the ship coasted through the endless miles of space. Somewhere hundreds of miles behind them Jubal Early was free floating in space, just waiting for his air supply to run out. Glad to be heading onto the next rock and job, Wash fiddled with some of the dials before he gave the helm a slight push forward. He could hear the pleasant hum of Serenity's engines as the ship plunged ever forward.

A faint beeping coming from the radar caught his attention and immediate worry crossed his mind. He took extreme care in plotting their courses, with River and Simon aboard it was clear they had to stay out of Alliance patrolled areas. If the strange reading he was getting wasn't alliance, then it could only mean Reavers - which was just as bad, if not worse. However, the reading got stranger. Whatever, it was gave off no heat signatures or life readings. He wanted at least an idea of what to tell Mal before he called him out of bed.

"Wuh de ma!" Wash shouted loudly as he noticed the strange anomaly seemed to pick up speed. With a quick calculation Wash figured it'd be on top of the ship in just under a few moments. When he looked up to try and catch a visual, Wash noticed the space in front of the ship begin to swirl and all he could do was hang on to the helm and hope that this thing wasn't about to break the ship into a million pieces. He left one hand firmly on the wheel and reached for the com, Mal had to know what was going on and quite frankly if this was going to be his last moment alive a kiss from his wife wouldn't be so bad either.

Just as he hit the button, Serenity gave a lurch as it passed through swirling vortex thingy. The sudden movement had caught Wash off his guard and caused him to tumble out of his chair. The last thing he remembered was feeling cold metal against his head, and everything becoming all dizzy. Like he was being sucked down a drain of sorts.

Falling rain and the feeling of being extremely cold and wet greeted Wash when he woke up. Confused and a bit fuzzy in the head due to the rather large bump he had on his forehead only added to this entirely strange ordeal. When he got to his feet and actually took the time to look around, Wash was not only more confused, but shocked as well. There seemed to be a faire of sorts going on, and if Wash saw correctly there seemed to be midget like monsters running around. This wasn't normal! He stood there, drenched and mouth agape. "Wuh de tyen, ah! I'm not in Kanas anymore."

If this place didn't make up its mind on the weather, Rose was going to stab someone. Well, maybe not, as apparently killing was a no-no. But it was making her completely mental, trying to figure out what to wear before actually going outside. Fortunately, the TARDIS had always taken good care of her passengers as far as food and clothing went, and Rose hadn't had to venture outside now that she was warm in her old-new accomodations. But she also was the type to go stir crazy if she didn't know what was going on at all times, and the fact that others were outside talking and chatting and she wasn't? Enough to drive her mad.

So she picked a rather classy looking navy blue rain coat out of the wardrobe (really, it was like being in her twenties and still getting to play dress up in there!) and ventured outside, a matching scarf tied around her hair. It actually wasn't as bad as she'd feared, just chilly and drizzly and, well, annoying.

The faire was looking rather dull by now, the once bright colours apparently washed out by the rain. There were also fewer people out and about, what with the weather and all. And there, in the middle of it all, stood a ginger man with a stunned look on his face. And when he spoke, Rose couldn't help but giggle slightly. "No, Toto, you're not," she replied out loud, catching the reference to one of her favourite girlhood movies. "Let me guess, you just dropped in?" She glanced over his wet clothing and the bump on his head and winced. "Literally?" Jareth never did get bored of trying new ways to bring people into this place, did he?

[ Sorry this took so long, being sick really kicked my butt. I'm better now! :D ]

The first thought that passed through Wash's mind was, Oh god a woman!. Then the normal answers to questions followed. She doesn't appear to have a gun, work for the alliance, or being anyone he owed money to - or stole money from to be more clear. The last thing that went through Wash's head before he opened his mouth was, that a woman with a good sense of humor couldn't be all that bad. She at least seemed to get the reference he had made just a second ago. Besides she was the only human being around in what seemed like miles of monsters, and Aliens didn't look like that.

"Dropped in... yeah, Aiya! Huaile." Wash lifted up a hand towards his head, which was throbbing and not to mention very wet from the rain. "You didn't happen to see a ship around here? Firefly class, goes by the name of Serenity?" Wash was eager to find Zoe and Mal and find out what in the hell happened.

(*snug* no worries here!)

He was definitely speaking some sort of babble she'd never heard before, which was interesting, since the TARDIS typically translated everything for her. Well, come to think of it, in this place, she hadn't had trouble understanding anyone even before the TARDIS had landed. Curious, that, but there were random words that seemed to be scattered into his speech. No matter how Rose cocked her head and tried to listen, they certainly made no sense to her. Gibberish, perhaps.

Still, he seemed nice enough and she moved a bit closer, taking a careful look at the bump on his head. "You won't die from it," she decided a moment later. "Not that I'm any sort of doctor, but my brother gets bumps and bruises all the time, s'what my mum always tells him. Anyway, no ships around here, that I know of anyway. Well, one, of the space variety, but it's not named Serenity." Pretty name, though, that. She'd gone through a phase when she was about sixteen where she'd wanted to give all of her kids names like Serenity and Destiny and Faith. Jackie'd thought she was nuts, however.

Serenity sounded familiar, though, and not just because of her affection for the name. Rose thought desperately, trying to remember where she'd heard it before. "You...traveling alone, then?"

No ship. Wash's heart sunk and his mind took to worry. The fact that Serenity wasn't in port, where ever port was on this strange planet was mighty disturbing. There was no way he'd just be dumped and left, no way. Wash lifted both of his hands up nervously before he turned away from the rather run down faire and tried to calm his nerves. "One ship? It ain't Alliance is there? If its got communications I'd be really glad if you let me make a call to my ship."

Wash felt a sudden rush to his head and turned around once more to take a seat on a rather feathery looking stool when the thing sprung to life and begun to move. Wash practically screamed as he backed up towards Rose and frantically pointed towards the thing that was moving. Its legs were bending and shifting, and like anything else normal it had two of them. Its foot however, was holding something equally as fluffy and basketball shaped. Upon closer inspection Wash was shocked to see it had a bird's beak and two eyes.

Why don't you watch where you're sitting! it snapped suddenly before it replaced its head atop its body and begun to wander off.

Wash was still pointing as the thing walked away, "What ... what the hell was that thing? What planet is this?"

Oh, gosh. As many days as she'd been there, she still hadn't gotten used to seeing quite such a thing happen. Even if she had seen some rather peculiar creatures along her travels. "Wait, you're a space traveler and never seen anything quite like that?" Rose's tone was teasing, though, and she gave him a soft smile. "Look, there's a bench...a real one, I promise, just a few feet over there. If you're not going to up and die of shock on me, I'll explain everything, I promise."

She began the walk to the bench and tried to hide her grin. Poor bloke, he seemed sweet enough. Worried, who wouldn't be on landing in this wretched place? But definitely nice. "First of all, nothing's as it seems around here. When you think you've got it down, they'll up and change things on you. Mr. Sparkly King, or Jareth as he prefers to go by, is holding everyone here against their will." Her face darkened at that, but then it brightened a bit. After all, she'd had some good times there already. Though she knew what it was like to miss the people she'd left behind, too.

"Oh, and I'm not sure what the Alliance is," she told him, catching on to his earlier statement, "but the ship here is more...freelance. You may be able to make calls out of it, but I don't make any promises. Oh, and I'm Rose, by the way."

"Can't say I have... Reavers are about as strange as they get, but that's more rip your skin off and eat it while your still alive strange." Which was more than strange, it was down right grotesque. Wash let the subject go when the other woman offered him a spot on a nice normal bench. Which he took up all too quickly, because despite being soaked to the bone it felt rather nice to just sit down.

The story Rose told him seemed all too impossible to even be real. His jaw was once again set open as she finished, and he found he had the urge to pinch himself. Was he dreaming? "There was a rather odd disturbance on the radar before I got clobbered." Wash wondered what the hell he was thinking to himself as he seemed to just go along with the entire story. Then again, he was quite sure he was awake and not dreaming this by now. He never had dreams as weird as this and the fact that Rose had never heard of the Alliance sort of backed up that he wasn't home anymore.

"Freelance? I like the sound of that, Rose. I'm Wash ... the ship I come from is like that too. She's a real beaut', and I'd appreciate any help you might be able to give. I left my wife behind ... and friends." He explained with a friendly smile, Wash was always glad to met folk who were honest.

Wrinkling her nose, Rose listened to the tale of these Reavers with disgust. If she was ever glad of anything, it was that she'd never encountered those in her journeys. She wasn't positive even her trusted Doctor could get them out of there.

Poor guy. "I know how that is," she told him, smiling gently. "My mum, my dad, my little brother... I even miss my best mate, and I haven't been as close to him as usual in...ages." Shaking her head, she pulled her knees up to her chest, balancing precariously on the bench. "I hate to tell you, though...Wash, was it? There's not much of a chance you're getting back there anytime soon. It's... I've never been anywhere like this. On one hand, it's fascinating. But it's also terrifying, thinking he can hold us all here."

She glanced over at him, resting her head on her knees. "I'll help how I can. But the ship's trapped here. She thinks for herself--and I mean that in a literal sense--and she's just as stuck as we are. So I'm afraid even if we did find your ship..." Shaking her head, she sighed. "I'm really sorry. There should be a goblin along shortly, likely'll bring a journal and a key to your new room. I know you won't want to get comfy, but it's still pretty nice to have a place to rest your head at night."

"So this Mr. Sparkly King ... guy just takes people from where ever they are and drops them here to live?" Wash scratched his head as he continued to try and make sense out of the entire situation. The nick name for Jareth was rather catchy, Wash was already imagining some guy in a giant frilly dress or at least a frilly coat and shirt like the Captain wore that one time when he took Kalyee out to a fancy party.

"Goblin. Key. Room ... tzao gao." Wash cursed under his breath before he waved a hand at Rose. "No no, don't be sorry. It isn't your fault or anything, but I appreciate the help and your ship sounds interesting. I'd love to take a look at her, Serenity can't go thinking for herself ... but that's not to say she won't just do what you want if you jump in her cockpit. Gotta guide the lady with love or you ain't getting any where."

Wash fell silent for a moment, he already missed the sound of Serenity's engines and the feel of her coasting through space. "Anything else I should know about this place, Rose?"

Rose nodded, feeling awful for being the bearer of bad news. "Afraid it's not my ship," she added, though she was smiling. "Though I've spent a few years traveling with the bloke who owns it. He'd probably talk ships with you for hours, though, where as I... I know she flies? Quite well, depending on the pilot, or so I hear." That thought brought a smile to her face, but it fell relatively quickly when she remembered that the poor TARDIS wasn't going anywhere for now.

It was still making her mental, though, trying to remember where she'd heard the name of his ship before. Serenity... "Oh!" she blurted, sitting straight up and looking at him with a pleasant expression. "Serenity! Do you know a girl named River?" That's where she'd heard it! River's journal entry had mentioned that this wasn't Serenity, and though Rose couldn't be sure it was one and the same, it certainly made sense to her. Wash wasn't one of the names she'd mentioned, Rose was almost sure of it, but it definitely was familiar just the same.

"Well, if there's a chance its worth taking." Anything was better than just giving in, and no one was left behind or just forgotten about for that matter. Not where Wash came from at least.

At Rose's exclamation Wash's brow narrowed in confusion, before she mentioned River's name. "River? Young girl ... not so right in the head?" Sadly, as bad as that sounded it was the best way to describe her. They had just been through an interesting ordeal, especially as far as River was concerned. Wash liked her, she was part of the crew and therefore, his family. However, as Jayne put it ... she wasn't all there.

"She's part of my crew!" Wash seemed very excited, mostly because if River was here then the chance of the others being here was likely as well.

If there's a chance, it's worth taking. Oh, if he had any idea how that sentence was going to stay with her. And it had nothing to do with ships or flying or space or anything of that nature. Well, space perhaps. A certain someone from space.

But she could forget that for the moment as she put the pieces together. It was so nice being able to help him come up with some reminder of the place he was from. And, perhaps, find the rest of his crew. After all, people were being reunited left and right. Tara had even been brought back from the dead, so to speak. Why couldn't he find the people he cared about?

"She's... Well, she did seem a little off the one time I talked to her. Almost like she knew...more than she should, I guess?" Rose shrugged, considering the thought. "But I'd bet anything it's her. She mentioned that this wasn't Serenity and..." Waving her hand around her, she smiled a little. "Well, not right in the head or not, she's right! She's been here...oh, just a day now, I should think. Not long at all."

"That was probably the wrong way to put it," Wash frowned at himself, if Zoe was around she probably would have given him what for. It was a tad inconsiderate of him, but the events of the other day and being locked up in his bunk were all too fresh in his mind.

"She's special ... very much so, the Alliance did some not so nice things to her you see. I don't even think her genius of a Doctor brother really can even explain it. Sounds like her, if you say she knew things." Wash knew that kinda talk, it was used often when it came to describing River's unique abilities.

"Mind showing a guy the right way?" He felt bad asking more of Rose, but he was still a bit lost in all of this.

So this man, this Wash, definitely knew River. It felt a bit like a version of matchmaking, pairing people from the same dimensions together. And really, nothing made Rose happier. She'd found Jack again, after all, and even had her Doctor back by her side. Hell, she was even living in the TARDIS again. Even if she wasn't necessarily the person he'd been looking for, it felt good to be able to let him know he wasn't alone here.

"Of course," she said with a small shrug, getting to her feet. As if on cue (and in this place, who knew, they might've been!), the little potato looking fellow came charging up. They didn't exactly get the most coordinated one, though, and he went careening into the spot on the bench that Rose had just vacated. She giggled, and then looked at Wash apologetically. "Sorry, I know giggling sounds terrible for them, but...trust me, they deserve it."

As the goblin got to his feet, he handed Wash an old-fashioned gold key and a leather-bound journal. "Well, there you have it," she said with a roll of her eyes. "Mr. Sparkly King's welcoming committee. Welcome to the Middle of Nowhere, here's your key and magic writing thingie, enjoy your stay."

Wash viewed this very small creature with a raised eyebrow. Part of him really wanted to reach out, pick up Mr. Potato Head and attempt to take a bite out of him. It wasn't that he was hungry, but he looked like a potato. Did he taste like a potato? Wash shook the thoughts away with a toss of his head, as he stared more intently at the Goblin.

He had already missed half the explanation, but he just assumed he'd figure things out eventually. With journal and room key now in hand, Wash gave the little thing a wave. "Thanks Mr. Potato Head... this place is so strange."

Wash's shoulders sunk as Rose added to the moment, and he pushed up off the bench and to his feet. "I'll enjoy it more once I figure out if everyone else is ok and I find my wife. Thanks for your help Rose, now if you'll excuse me I'm going to try and find my room so I can change and maybe get some rest."

Wash tucked the journal and key under his arm and gave a warm smile to Rose and he turned to find his way out of this crazy Faire.
