Who: River & Jacob
What: First meetings
When: Day 6 mid morning
Where: C Dorm
Rated: TBD
Status: Incomplete

It was actually a good thing that the Cullen boy had led Jacob around yesterday when he first arrived in this dream world. Otherwise the poor boy would have probably ended up in someone dorm other than his in a desperate attempt to find the right one. They all looked so similar but for the numbers posted near the doors. The only problem was, Once he had left his dorm this morning to explore a bit of the alien landscape and abundant amount of things to do, he had neglected to really get a good look at what the dorm looked like so that he may recognize it again. Also, remembering his number would have been helpful. That was careless of him and a bit too airheaded for his taste.

Unfortunately for him, once Jacob thought he had figured out an aspect of this world, their captor went and changed it on him. If he was a little unstable in the head it would have been maddening, but really, he just found it funny. There was no rhyme or reason to this place which was ridiculous and hilarious at the same time. Ah well, at least he would never be board.

Passing by one of the odd shaped dorms, Jacob slowed and passed the front doors very slowly, hoping to recognize something, anything that may give him a poke of recollection. Something caught his quickly and startlingly as he felt and heard a loud thump coming from one of the walls of the dorm nearest to him. The vibrations led him to believe that something heavy had just been thrust against the interior wall.

When he neared to investigate, another unidentified object was thrust against the wall followed by a voice; a female voice. Was she in distress? Jacob put his hand against the wall to feel for another thump but instead he heard the female voice more distinctive, as if they were directly on the other side. The voice called out and yes, there was definitely distress in that tone.

"Hey, hello, are you okay in there?" Jacob went to the front door and knocked. "Is everything okay? Do you need some help?"

"Don't worry, I don't plan on cutting it any time soon. Most of the guys where I'm from have long hair anyway." He smiled again, a nice wide one that showed his teeth. "Just promise me that you'll never to french braid it and we can be friends."

It was funny, as devastatingly upset she had been a few moments ago, she looked to have recovered from it enough to ask him questions. She was either very moody or easily distracted. Perhaps both, but either way, he was going to ride this wave and keep her distracted long enough for the girl to come out of this on her own terms. Anyway, It was keeping his own mind off of his current situation, which was no small feet. When you were stranded in an alien world, it was difficult to think of anything else.

Truthfully, this sad little girl had been the first thing that he had encountered in this strange land that didn't make him miss home. She was strange, yes, but not really in a bad way, not yet. Her wide eyes looked up at him like he had the potential to give her all the answers that the universe had to offer, if she was but to ask him. No one had ever looked at him quite like that before. It made him feel unique, important.

When she asked about why he chose those names, Jacob could feel the blush on his cheeks grow even redder. He just knew he was going to embarrass himself. "When I looked at you for the first time, all I could think of was this china doll that I saw once a long time ago" He dared not say it was because she was so fragile and broken looking. "It's mostly your eyes, they're round and shiny. I like them."

He took a good long glance into the girl's eyes before looking down again to conceal his mortified expression. 'Did I really just say that?' he thought. 'All right, just keep her talking, sacrifice you dignity and keep her talking' "Or you could just tell me what to call you. Your actual name is probably much better than those."

"That's rather hypocritical." she made a face to the invisible guys he was reffering to. "Deal. Though I probably couldn't if I wanted to." She said laughing at the idea of french braiding his hair; she shrugged as she thought about it. She knew the basic idea and movements of braiding hair into a french braid though she never tried it before. She always grew impaitent whenever she tried to do her own hair. If it was ever done Inara was the one who would do it for her. But even then it wouldn't stay up long with the way she tended to act...

River found Jacob rather interesting. He wasn't like anyone else she had grown used to. Granted none of the others were near her age. Kaylee was the closest to her and she was in her twenties. It was a little different for her to be interacting with someone so close to her age. She could tell that he was from a different world than her own. River had always rather loved to learn. She could have sat there all day asking him questions but she figured he would probably grow bored of it soon.

"China doll." River quoted. Her smile grew when he commented on her eyes. "Eyes are the window to a person's soul. Or so they tell me." she shrugged and rolled her eyes at the idea. It wasn't like she needed a person's eyes to tell her things about their soul.

When he questioned her and looked away River was a bit confused. "You did." she tilted her head again, underneath his to see his face. "Is that bad?" she liked it when people were honest with her out right rather than her having to pick up on it from their thoughts. Not only did it make things easier for her but it also showed her a bit more of the person they truly are rather than the person they try to be. "River Tam." she answered, straightening back up. The tears had finally stopped flowing altogether at this point and she moved to sit normal rather than with her knees so close to her chest.

It was refreshing when she let that tiny giggle escape her throat. So, she could laugh, that was a relief. For a brief moment there, Jacob thought that there was a weird race of girls out there that were eternally sad and teary eyed. Lucky for him, if there was such a thing, she wasn't one of them because by this point, it wouldn't have mattered one way or the other. She was too intriguing to just take off on her now.

He caught the eye roll and wondered what she had found sarcastic. "I take it you don't agree that the eyes let you see into the soul?" Jacob leaned in closer to the girl and acted as though he was peering into a peep hole. "If that were true, you would be an open book because your peepers are huge." He looked deeper, pretending to searching for something in her eyes. "Nope, squeaky clean in there, no soul hanging around. It must be deeper." He leaned back and grinned out of habit. "I keep mine here." He pointed to the bottom of his shoe. "That way the core of who I am is close to the earth at all times." He was being all metaphysical, like his father, he didn't much like it when he talked like that, but she seemed to bring a bit of that out of him for some reason that escaped him.

Jacob blinked several times when, River, she called herself, had responded with a very strange thing to say. "I did what, exactly? Is what bad?" He looked at her with a confused expression on his face, but quickly covered it. She was obviously still a little upset and confused. He wasn't going to call her on it. It was funny though, for a minute there, he thought she was commenting on his thoughts. Never in a million years could he meet two people that could do that in one day. Wait, thinking about where he was, nothing was impossible...

"River, that is much prettier than the two I thought up. It fits you." Jacob stuck out his dark hand to her. "It's a pleasure River, I am glad that you opened that door."

River shrugged at the idea. "People can tell you a lot of things without really saying them. You don't specifically need eyes to tell you." she said thinking of a better way to explain. Even if she ever wanted to tell him about the things she could do, her mind prevented her. It was as if when she started to explain it could go away and get as lost as a word waiting at the tip of the tongue. Though it was often hard for her to comprehend the idea herself.

Jacob startled her for a moment when he leaned in close to look into her eyes. She flinched away from him but when he started to joke about her eyes she relaxed and laughed. "My eyes are of normal proportional size as everyone else's." she said, making a face.

River tilted her head when he pointed to his shoe. It was a rather intersting idea. First the ability to keep your soul anywhere but where it was placed already when born, but then at the bottom of his shoe to stay with the earth. She smiled at the idea.

When he questioned her, River became rather confused. He had said that out loud right? She began to worry, unable to remember what was said and what was not. If she wasn't paying attention it all could seem the same to her. "You...said those things." she shrugged trying to brush it off. It had seemed that she was mistaken in answering something he did not say out loud. She was usually very careful about that with people she had not had the chance to get to know. Jacob proved to be more a distraction than she realized. She let her guard down for a moment and mixed things up. As if River wanted more confusion in her brain. Though she was happy to see that he was easy to read if she ever wanted to, she was worried about herself not realizing what she had done before she did it. She hoped he would let it go, not wanting him to think of her as a freak so quickly. She was just starting to get used to him.

When he held out her hand, she quickly caught herself back up to speed with what he had said. She stared at the hand for a moment. It was such a common gesture, though one rarely bestowed upon her. Typically her brother or parents would introduce her. She smiled at the hand and reached out to shake it. His warm skin caught her by surprise. She glanced back up at him. "I'm glad that you were willing to make it angry to help me." she joked, remembering how odd she found the comment when he had first made it. Still she was grateful that he did come to her aid.

River seemed suddenly confused about something. She was questioning their conversation and contesting that he had said things that he didn't. Well, actually, he had thought them, but that didn't count. He wished that he could understand her a little bit better so that he could be of more help. But as of now, all he was was a stranger with no idea of what was wrong with her, or what he could do to make it better. Jacob was afraid, though, to pry into the subject of even bring up what had her so worked up. It had to have been a big something to cause a little thing like her to do so much damage to the dorm.

All Jacob knew was that she was homesick and missed someone very badly. It had to have been more than that though, unless her mental state was so fragile that it took very little to upset her. No, he wouldn't ask about what had made her so miserable. He was just happy that she seemed to momentarily forget about her problems. Now, if only he could make it last.

Jacob wasn't sure if the girl would take his hand when he offered it. After all, they were still strangers to each other. But when River did put her hand in his, it finally made her somehow more real than anything else in this psychotic place. She was corporeal, she was soft, and she was right there before him with a timid smile. Finally, a sunny side to this bizarre experience.

"Yeah, I was so going to beat the crap out of that door. It's just the kind of guy I am." He smiled, teasingly. "Night in shining jeans and t-shirt."

The tall lanky boy then changed his position from crouching down on his haunches to sitting on his but. His legs had begun to fall asleep so as he stretched them out in front of him the feeling came back in rush of the pins and needs sensation. "Owowow,"he groaned. "Sorry, my legs fell asleep. Happens sometimes cuz they're so long."

Once situated, Jacob spied a lone, remaining tear that clung desperately to the tip of River's chin. With his index finger, he reached over to her face, but then paused and looked at her. "You, uh, still have a tear..." He captured the tear on the tip of his finger then wiped it on hes jeans. "There, now I can't even tell you were crying. We just look like two friends hanging out. That is, if you don't mind me here. I can totally go if you want to be alone."

Realizing that Jacob ad just invited himself in and then made himself comfy, he began to stand, feeling suddenly like an intruder.

"Aren't I lucky to have one of those." she smiled and laughed at the idea of a Knight like that.

When River took back her hand she began to play with the hem of her dress again. Her head tilted a bit as she watched him change position. "Asleep. Caused by the lack of blood flow through the body. Often prevented and cut off by another limb. Yours are rather long." she commented. When he had been standing in the doorway she hadn't really noticed how much taller he was than her until he mentioned it now. Although she was a bit caught up in her emotions when he had come in.

As Jacob reached out to touch her face, again River flinched a bit. She had to stop doing that. Although she couldn't help it when someone new was so willing to be as close to her as he was. When he said what he was doing, River relaxed and just let him wipe away the tear. She looked at his jeans where he had taken her tear to and smiled. It was sweet of him to be willing to take care of her like this. She wasn't used to being treated this way. The only person who ever did was Simon. River hoped that this Jacob wouldn't suddenly dissapear from her. She was eager to know what it was like to play with someone her age.

River pulled herself from her thoughts when he began to stand. Reflexively she reached out and pulled on the edge of his jeans to make him sit again. "Don't go." she stared up at him. "Friend." saying the word out loud made it feel more real. She had a friend who was her age. She liked the idea of it and how Jacob had been treated her like a normal person so far. She didn't want to let an opportunity like this get away from her. "Please?"

There was something so fragile about this strange girl that made the Quileute teen want to pick her up in his arms and rock her, telling her that this cruel place would not be able to get to her anymore. What an unusual thought to have for someone that he didn't know. Besides, he refused to make promises that he couldn't keep. He was raised better than that. It must have been the vulnerable state that she was currently in, along with the tears, (lets not forget those), that was sparking such protective thoughts.

When River tugged on Jacob's jeans, he paused and looked down into her sad face. So, he wasn't overstaying his welcome. He hadn't entered unwanted and was hanging around like the creepy guy who drove a white windowless van around suburbia, gawking at you from his cracked window. He so did not want to be that guy! Not only was he welcome there, but she had said 'please'. Well, that did it then, she was stuck with him.

Crouching back down on his haunches again, he slid two of his fingers into the palm of her small hand and unattached her from his jeans. Jacob then gave a faint, encouraging squeeze with his hand and smiled happily. "I'm not going anywhere if you don't want me to. I may not be the most interesting company in this bizarre place, but I'll do my best."

Settling himself in again in front of her to a more comfortable position, Jacob slid his jacket off, (it was much warmer here than in Forks) and tossed it behind him. "Why don't you ask me something, anything that you want to know about me, and I promise that' I'll answer it truthfully."

At first River smiled when he gave her hand a faint squeeze and promised not to go anywhere. She nodded in response to what he had said and was grateful that he agreed to stay with her. She didn't want to be alone without Simon. She hoped Simon would come for her but until then she at least had Jacob to keep her company.

Slowly her smile disapeared from her face. She stared at the hand for a moment before he let go to take his jacket off. She had felt something different inside of him. Something she couldn't quite put her finger on and understand. It was nothing like she had ever seen inside a person before. It was something in him that wasn't completely...human.

River looked back up from her hand at his face with a little confusion and awe mixed together, the offer to ask him anything she wanted had amazing timing with her thoughts. It opened the door for her to question what she had felt in him. Though he looked human enough and said his name was Jacob Black she wanted to understand more. "What are you?" she said flatly. It was the best way for her to ask and get a possibly decent answer that she could be satisfied with.

Another smile given to Jacob by River's somber mouth was both reassuring and calming. There was something about seeing sadness on her face that was very disheartening. It was an emotion that looked like it new her very well, but did not truly belong there, like a latex mask glued on by disappointment and cruelty. What had this girl gone through in her short life to have such a look? Jacob dared not think of it. Brighter thoughts suited him much better. So he decided to focus on the positive, like meeting this new, unique girl. He looked forward to getting to know her.

As Jacob waited for River to mull over the question for him, her expression had subtly changed to an unexpected stare of confusion. Her external emotions were flowing into one another so quickly, he was having a bit of trouble keeping up. Well, since this was obviously just the way that she was, he would just have to work harder at it.

On any normal day back home, the question that the girl before him had asked would have been out of place and blatant. Here, though, in this prison that they were all in, that question was perfectly warranted. Jacob had just assumed that River was human because she looked just like one. That was such a stupid assumption in this world. Every single one of them was a minority and an endangered species.

Grinning crookedly, the Native American propped up a knee and hung his arm over it in a laid back pose. He thought for a moment about some detailed explanation of the human race, but decided to go for the simpler approach. "I'm a homosapien, a human. I'm from Earth in the milky way galaxy. I live in LaPush Washington, in the USA and I'm just an average kind of guy." His smile faltered ever so slightly. "Sorry someone more out of this world didn't come knocking on your door, like that time traveler guy, or the intimidating looking wizard dude. They could probably show you some amazing things."

Jacob chuckled after his final word, but there was a shallowness there as he tried to hide his melancholy thoughts of his ordinariness. Those would not help her mood one bit.

River stared at him with wide eyes. So much information offered up at once to her. Though she knew he looked human but there was something in him that was far from it. Though she wanted to understand what it was, the information ended up taking a back seat to her newest facination: the fact that he was from Earth.

"Earth?" she tilted her head trying desperately to search in him the answers. "No one lives on Earth anymore..." she shook her head trying to get rid of the confusion. "La Push? That is an interesting name." she thought out loud to herself. His mention of the man who can travel through time and a wizard made her glance up fast at him. "I haven't met anyone here besides you. I've talked to only a couple of others over the journals but none has mentioned about traveling through time or being of magic." River hated being so confused like this. She was usually really attentive. She chalked it all up to her emotional crisis as of late but she needed to make a mental note of getting outside of her room sometime soon to see these people in person. If she was with them face to face she'd be able to read more of them.

Jacob's light chuckle pulled River from her thoughts and focused her attention back on him. Still she thought that he was not being completely honest with her. She didn't understand when he had just promised to tell her anything she wanted. She wanted to know what he was but she could see perhaps he didn't understand himself. When she was in a calmer mood she would need to investigate this further. Until then she was somewhat willing to let it slide.

"It's your turn I suppose." she said shrugging. She figured it was only fair to let him question her. Though she knew technically she could not answer much she'd at least try.

How sad that River hadn't met anyone else here besides him. He doubted weather or not she had actually been out of this small apartment. Maybe with a little time and some persuasion, Jacob could get her outside to take in a little fresh air and look at all the spaced out plant life. As screwed up as this entire place was, he would much rather be enduring it out of doors rather than in.

As soon as River said that Earth was uninhabited, Jacob's eyes widened. Where was he exactly. "No one lives there huh? Well, since time traveling is suddenly real, maybe we are in the future, or even the past. Oh, I haven't actually met all those people I mentioned, someone told me that they were here. Or, since there are witches and wizards, this could all be some great illusion made up to confuse us into something, something..." Jacob screwed up his face as he tried to figure things out. "Oh, I have no idea" The boy slouched forward and plopped his hand over the top of his head in confusion. If only he was a little more cleaver, he could work this situation out easier.

"It seems like a cop out to explain this all away with magic, but I can't think of any other sane explanation. I wish there was one, I don't want to believe in magic." He said that last sentence more quietly, as if to himself, making a declaration.

When River offered the same open question to Jacob, at first he was thrilled, and his face showed it. He would love to know more about his new acquaintance; where she was from, if she had any family, what she did for fun. But once he thought about it for a second, Jacob quickly changed his mind regarding that line of questioning. He didn't want to reminder of such things right now. They may spur another fit of sadness. Instead, he managed to actually pull out a question that was slightly creative. Giving himself a mental pat on the back, he continued...

"Okay, here goes. Now this is a tricky one so if you need some time to think about it, go right ahead. I can be patient as all get out." He readjusted his position again, stretching his legs back out so they laid almost next to River, and went on. "If you could be anywhere, anywhere at all doing whatever you wanted, what would you be doing, and where would it be?"

Jacob did have reasoning behind his question, he just hoped that her answer wasn't too obscure, and he hoped that it didn't back fire and make her think of things that she shouldn't be thinking of.

River shrugged."It's currently 1517 where I'm from." she tried to contempalte the possible idea of being puled further into the future. Or even just gathering in one place from different dimensions. That was an idea. Though River wasn't sure how the idea of different dimensions could work in life.

"Magic cannot be physically possible with certain things..." she said quietly to herself. "Though if you mentioned people already that are time travellers and witches..." she shook her head. She was speaking nonsense and she knew it. She didn't know what she was saying anymore and talk like this was getting them no answers. The only person she supposed that could clarify anything would be the person who brought them all here; and she was no where near ready for a confrontation with him.

River thought for a moment of the different things she wished she could be doing. She thought of Simon and her family as well as the crew on Serenity. She thought about the schools she had wanted to attended and the things she wanted to learn. But one thing she had always wanted stuck out most in her mind. Something her parents often tried to disuade her from every persuing but Simon was the only one to ever support her. Though she missed her parents she knew that they had long since abandoned she and her brother. Finally settling on an answer she looked up at Jacob and smiled. "I would be on Serenity...or some nice outer planet. I would dance until I can't dance anymore." the grin on her face of the idea of dancing as much as she wanted with the ones she loved surrounding her was rather large. Though she missed Simon and the crew already terribly, at the moment her mind was filled with dancing.

Jacob looked upon the girl in surprise. That was not at all what he had expected her to answer. All of the things that she could have chosen and all this lost one wanted to do was dance. Jacob was beginning to like this girl, yes, most definitely. He had no idea what Serenity was but she had definitely said outer planet. Also, earlier in their conversation she had mentioned that Earth was empty. So this all must have meant that River was either from another planet, or she was a space traveler. That was just too strange for him. Jacob wasn't sure if he could quite grasp that idea yet, so he wouldn't ask about it. Well, at least not yet.

When She spoke about her dancing, the happiness on River's face was unparalleled to what he had seen from her so far. She truly looked overjoyed at the thought of being with whoever she had just mentioned, and dancing. Good, his question had not upset her, and it may just have been the distraction that he needed to get her out of this unhealthy box that they were currently in. He still wasn't sure if this shaky girl would trust him enough to leave with him. River seamed so jumpy, and flinched when he would try to touch her. Jacob dared not think what made her that way, but he was still going to try to help her; to try to make her happy. Besides, all this was a very nice distraction from their current situation.

Sliding his long legs back under him, Jacob stood and then reached his hand down to River. His expression was neutral, but there always seemed to be the slighted smirk hanging from the corner of his mouth, and he never could disguise the gentleness from his eyes. It was way to easy for him to be non threatening. "Then I have a surprise for you, If you trust me. I think you'll like it." He grinned a little more. "Will you come with me, River?"

River was so caught up in her thoughts of dancing that it surprised her when he suddenly stood up and offered his hand to her. She stared at his hand again. Worried about wher he would take her. Worried about what could possibly be waiting for her outside the door. But if the outside world presented her Jacob, thus far, it cannot be all bad. She liked Jacob and she didn't want him to leave her. She trusted him and after reading in him a bit of what he had planned she smiled and took his hand. "Ok." she nodded and pulled herself up. She didn't know where her silk robe was and she already long since abandoned her combat boots. Not bothering to look for them she decided to just follow after Jacob outside the door.

The fresh air felt good against her face and blew her hair and wild green dress. She closed her eyes and scanned the area. It seemed harmless enough. She smiled over at Jacob, "Lead the way." she said as she closed the door behind her.

His surprise was evident when River accepted Jacob's invitation to leave the confines of her restrictive dorm and follow him. As hopeful as he was, he really didn't think she was going to do it. That would have been okay with him though, he would have just sat back down and kept her company right where they were. But lucky for the both of them, she agreed and once again the cool wind was kissing his skin and the slightly overcast sky welcomed him back.

It was true that, just like any teenager, Jacob liked an occasional video game and pointless blogging, but that did not monopolize his time. He would much rather be working with his hands or screwing around outside. It was an inevitable side effect of living in a tiny mountain town and having a tribe full of people around him that took pleasure in communing with nature. So now that they were outside, hopefully Jacob's increased level of comfort would rub off on his new friend.

With a renewed grin and a glint in his eye, the young man led River around to the back of the group of dorms and away from the building a bit until they were a good ways from the stone structures. Ahead of them was an open field of tall aqua-green grass. The wind caught the plentiful stalks and sent them gently swaying like an emerald sea. It was a beautiful sight to see, and he hoped that River was thinking the same thing. Walking ahead of the girl, Jacob waded into the calf high grass and then turned back to his companion.

"I'm actually really awful at this, but I think I can manage this without royally embarrassing myself." Jacob chuckled softly. "At least I hope I can."

The tall, dark boy raised his arms out from his sides slightly with his palms up, as if he was offering himself up to River. "So, um, do you want to dance...dance with me?"

River followed Jacob with eagerness. She couldn't wait to go to the open field she saw him leading her to. When they arrived she smiled at the large grass. To her, the swaying of the stalks looked as if they were dancing. Just waiting for her to join them.

Jacob pulled her attention back to him when he started to speak. She tried her best not to laugh and went over to him. She smiled, tilting her head as she watched him offer his hands to her. She began to think of what sort of dance she wanted to do. One that would be easy with him. Suddenly she remembered the hillfolk's dance on an outer planet. Though she didn't like much of what happened afterwards she did love to dance with them.

River began to hear the flute and violens in her head. A song she loved. She closed her eyes and began to sway until the intro blurred into the main core of the song. She opened her eyes and took Jacobs hands, pulling him along with her. She moved one hand on his shoulder, keeping the other still in her hand as she began to spin and move. The skirt of her dress flew around her as her feet would copy the steps she had learned by watching flawlessly. Her long hair blew wild in the wind. She was sure to pay attention to Jacob and help him when she could. She didn't mind if he wasn't really one to dance. Just the fact that she was dancing again made her happy. She let go of his shoulder and held onto his hand as she spun around underneath and let go, letting him dance on his own with her.
