Entry tags:arrival, carlisle cullen, complete, day five, tara maclay

WHO: Carlisle and Tara
WHEN: Day 5, midmorning
WHAT: Carlisle's arrival
WHERE: The library
RATING: PG
STATUS: Complete

Carlisle sat behind his desk, his hand flying across the chart he was filling out and his eyes unfocused, seeing off to spaces unknown. Edward had been unheard from for a handful of days now, and even with Alice's vision, Carlisle worried. He'd heard from the grapevine that the Swan girl that had given Edward so much trouble was missing as well, and while he wanted to think the best of Edward, and generally did, he worried that the boy's nature might have gotten the best of him, and he'd hidden from the guilt. Needlessly, certainly, but that was the kind of thing that Edward might do. And so he worried, and Esme fretted. Emmett seemed unperturbed, though his wrestling partner was gone, Rosalie was Rosalie, Jasper was quiet as usual, and Alice was perfectly serene in knowing that Edward had found a place to be happy, and a girl stronger than any of them to keep him entertained. But still, Carlisle worried.

"Doctor Cullen to the Emergency Room, please. Doctor Cullen, Emergency Room..."

The voice over the intercom knocked Carlisle out of his revere, and he set down his pen and rose from his chair, straightening his tie compulsively as he walked to the door. But as he stepped over the threshold, the familiar walls of his hospital were gone. Replaced with the walls of a...library?

Carlisle looked around, aghast, and blinked a few times, sure that he'd come to his senses at any second. He was only worried, after all. But still, the vision didn't clear, and Carlisle began to realise what was going on. His cell phone came out of the pocket of his lab coat, but there was no signal. Then what could only be classified as a goblin popped up at his side, and shoved a journal and a key into his hand before disappearing again. What in God's name...?

There was someone in the stacks nearby, and so Carlisle approached slowly, pushing back his anxiety and giving the same calming, trustworthy smile that he bestowed on everyone he met. "Excuse me...Could you possibly tell me where I am?" he asked kindly, his golden eyes searching the person's face.

Finally she had found the library. This was both a relief and a brand new cause of stress. The building was HUGE. How could Tara ever narrow down all the information provided in this mammoth collection to just the facts she needed about Jareth? Should she be looking into magical information? History? Spells? Geography? There were so many potential sections and factors to take into consideration. This would all be so much easier if the rest of the scoobies were here with her, especially Mr. Giles. He was always so knowledgeable about these mystical things. Maybe Willow would be able to help as well? Though, she had asked for a little time away from the other woman at the same time. Maybe later… Maybe then once she had found some sort of lead, anything at all, she could bring Willow here and they could sort through the information together. Perhaps that Snape fellow could help as well, he seemed to know what he was talking about previously as well. Maybe if all of them put their heads together then some real progress could be made since it was obvious no single person could take on Jareth alone.

Turbulent thoughts wracked the young woman’s brain as a desperate search for any piece of the puzzle continued through book after book after book. Sighing heavily Tara flipped through the pages of another dusty tome, eyes quickly pulling all the information she could manage out of the book, though her mind was beginning to float other places at this point. Footsteps echoed and her vision raised as brows furrowed. Who could possibly be here besides her? All the others seemed far too caught up in each other, being angry at Jareth and exploring their surroundings to really be caught in a library… Didn’t they?... Wait… Maybe it was Willow! Seeing an unfamiliar face then around a stack brows furrowed as she curiously looked at him. “O-oh, um, you’ve, um, been taken to a, um, alternative reality where a d-dark mage is h-holding us captive for his, um, own p-personal entertainment.” She paused for a moment setting down the book. “There’s a, um, l-lot of us h-here. All from, um, d-different places. I’m, um, Tara, nice to meet you.”

Carlisle was used to being stuttered at, but still, it was amusing every time it happened. And what she was saying? Even more so. He looked at her curiously, wondering if she was a bit touched. "Alternative reality with a dark mage..." he repeated under his breath, his eyebrows crawling up his forehead like they were alive. Definitely touched.

"Carlisle Cullen," he offered with a polite smile and a nod, scratching at his forehead briefly. "I'm sorry, but I do realise that I've been pulled from my hospital and dropped in a library, but...I'm having a hard time actually believing what you're saying," he admitted.

Then he held up the book and the key. "What was that thing, that gave me these?" he asked, still not sure whether or not to believe her, but at the very least, he'd be better informed on her brand of crazy.

“It’s um, it’s hard to b-believe I know. I, um, I thought I was in a d-dream for the first couple days m-myself.” She smiled with concern and a hint of nervousness at the man. Tara shifted, placing the book she had just been holding gently back on the shelf from which she had retrieved it. “If um, if you don’t believe me, you c-could go outside and s-see the goblins.” Her smile turned slightly awkward as she wasn’t really sure what she could offer this man in her own defense other then the couple of items she had all ready brought up as points. Though, anyone who wasn’t accustomed to the strange and unusual would surely think anyone was insane. Realistically anyone in Sunnydale outside of the slay crew would probably have wrapped her up in a straight jacket and locked the blond witch away in an insane asylum a long time ago.

Eyes glanced over the two items presented and a somewhat sad smile crossed her lips. “Th-that’s for your-your room and um, the journal is magical. It’s your means of c-communication with all the, um, others that trapped here as well.”

"Goblins..." Carlisle repeated, nodding. Well that answered that question, however unbelievably. Then again, he was a vampire, so who was he to judge?

Looking down at the key and journal, Carlisle's brow furrowed and he stuck the key in the pocket of his lab coat before flipping the journal open. The entries were something that might be found on an internet forum, and yet, they all seemed to ring true to what the girl in front of him was saying. Then his eyes fell on one in a very familiar hand.

"Edward..." he breathed, physically staggered, gripping the nearest shelving for support, the wood cracking slightly under his hand before he realised what he was doing and let go. "My apologies," he said with a little smile at the woman. "This, here, is my son," he explained, showing her the entry. "He'd disappeared. It seems that this is where he ended up."

The man fell silent and Tara attempted to examine his aura for a moment, though the reading was confusing. Everything seemed jumbled with a combination of dark and light that compared to nothing she had ever seen before in her life. How did this even make sense? Trying to figure it out for a moment she was lost to the man’s actions though the blond witch still tried not to stare. Instead she pretended to be looking back at the book she had just placed back on the shelf a moment before. Pulling the book back off of the shelf again she glanced up to look at the man, trying to see if his aura would reveal any more clues to her before looking back down at the book. The last thing she needed to have a problem with was getting caught for staring too long.

The sudden pronunciation of a name caused her to look up at the man, concern clear across her features. With the reaction given there was obviously some sort of problem here. What could this sudden issue be? Worry clear she leaned in for a moment, eyes glancing over the writing she had noticed before but hadn’t yet had a chance to read for her self. Nodding at the man she offered a weak smile in a little attempt to reassure the man. “Well, m-maybe you can f-find him then. You can, um, w-write back to him in the book and you can e-even address an entry privately to him, j-just by um, writing in the book that you only want him to be able to read it.”

He could tell he was being watched, investigated even, and Carlisle wasn't really bothered or surprised by it. It happened far more often than he'd have liked, but there wasn't much he could do about it and still live his life the way he wanted to.

Carlisle smiled at the worry on her face and shook his head. "I'm fine," he assured her, answering the unspoken question. "It was just a shock." And hardly anything surprised Carlisle anymore, so that was saying something. "Thank you, I will," he smiled, taking in that information and wondering how to make the best use of it. What he really wanted to do was to tear through the city until he could lay his own eyes on Edward, but he realised that might not go over particularly well.

"If I could bother you for just one more moment...Would you mind pointing me in the direction of the E dorms?" he asked, looking at his key again. He might as well figure out where he was staying and the like. Carlisle was looking at Tara as he walked the few feet toward the door, and so didn't notice when he stepped into a patch of sunlight streaming through the window. The effect was instantaneous, and so was his reaction. Carlisle's skin lit up like a prism, throwing jets of light in every which direction, seeming to light up from underneath the surface instead of from the sunlight itself. But as soon as it started, it stopped, as he'd stepped out of the light, far too fast for the human girl's eyes to see his movement. He was trapped, at least until the sun went down.

Brows furrowed curiously as she watched the man and with his response she nodded slowly. “M-maybe you could, um, write your-your son, telling him where you two could, um, m-meet?” It was the only piece of advice she could think to offer him at this time, maybe it would help somehow? She had tried to imply the idea before but realizing the shock that may be setting into the man, stating the idea in a clearer manner seemed like it may be a good idea. “You could probably find him q-quicker that way.” A small shrug was given in response to the man, she wasn’t really sure how she could help him otherwise. Though the knowledge of such a young looking man having a son did seem rather odd, even if it wasn’t impossible. Maybe the man just looked young? Lots of people had baby faces, though the mix in his aura still confused her in a manner she couldn’t make sense of.

Giving the man a half smile in return she nodded slightly. “N-no bother at, um, at all, I could take you there if you like.” Placing the book back on the shelf again she straightened her shirt and dusted the blue jeans she had been wearing off. Glancing up from the attention to her clothing a sudden shift in motions seems to almost let on something deeper going on but at the same time it looked as if nothing had happened at all. Tara blinked a moment trying to figure out if her eyes were playing tricks on her imagination. Nothing was there, that must have been it. Maybe she had been spending too much time in this dusty library, a good walk would do her good at this point.

She hadn't seen anything, which was a lucky break, and Carlisle scrambled to recover. "Actually, I think I'll stay here for a bit, check out this journal and the like," he said with a decided nod, moving back into the dim light of the library. He certainly couldn't go outside on a day like today without attracting a great deal of attention.

"Thank you so much for your help," he said, giving her a smile, and then found himself a place to sit. Apparently, this world was just as strange as his old one.
