Tonks tells Marcus
WHO: Marcus & Tonks
WHAT: An awkward revelation
WHEN: Morning, Day 5
WHERE: At the entrance to the Labyrinth
RATING: PG
STATUS: Complete

Marcus contemplated the possibilities as he ran his fingers over the stone. The wall ran off in both directions as far as he could see, broken only by this single entrance. What mazes, what traps awaited the adventurer who braved the Labyrinth? What fearsome monsters might dwell inside? What personal nightmares might Jareth have the power to produce? The only way to find out was to take up the challenge, and someday soon, Marcus knew he would.

It wasn't like him to stay in this city outside the wall. It wasn't like him to be intimidated out of doing what was necessary. All he was waiting for was a little more time to make friends and gather allies. There was, he knew, strength in numbers. Of course, there was only one ally he really wanted by his side, but it had been a whole day since he had seen her. He was beginning to think she was avoiding him.

Sighing, he ran his fingers along the rough-hewn blocks that made up the wall. He almost didn't care what it was, why Tonks was not around; he just wished he knew the reason. And he wished she were there so he could talk to her about it. Had he been neglectful? Had something traumatic happened to her? How could he set it right if she wasn't there to give him a chance?

Tonks held onto her lover tightly, wondering what was going to happen. Was this the last time he'd let her hold him? The baby wasn't planned, after all. Would he be upset? Leave her? So she clung on to his strong shoulders, and then, when she knew they were a fair distance for the Labyrinth, she landed the broom gently and hopped off.

"Don't go into the Labyrinth, not without me. I don't want you to be lost to me, not before we..." She sighed and rubbed her hands over her face. Suddenly, she burst into tears. Damn hormones. She really was getting more and more unpredictable, even to herself. Ashamed of her tears, she turned away, her hands over her eyes.

Was something on her mind... yes, very much so. Now, all she had to do was stop crying long enough to tell him. Which was apparently a bit of a challenge just at the moment.

When Marcus saw Tonks cry he was sincerely moved. To think that it meant so much to her that they solve the Labyrinth together. To think that he had almost destroyed that dream for her by entering on his own! How could he have been so callous, so insensitive? And could he really have justified it to himself by telling himself that he hadn't had a conversation with her in more than a day? As if that had anything to do with anything! The passion in his lover's voice was only underlined by the dramatic gesture she had made, sweeping him away on her broom. Once he had gotten over the exhilaration of it, Marcus had found it quite moving. Not as moving, however, as seeing Tonks burst into tears. Rushing over to her, he held her tenderly in his arms, encouraging her to cry on his shoulder.

"No less than I want to be lost to you, darling. I ... Wait. Not before we what?"

Tonks wiped her tears away, and when she was more or less recovered, she turned back to him. "Well, before we have to be separated, we're trying to get home, aren't we?" Her tone of voice made it into a question, rather than a statement of fact as it had been intended to come out as. "I don't want to lose you before I have to."

She tried a smile, and then rushed at him, wrapped her arms around him, and kissed him hard. Just in case that was the last time she was allowed to kiss him. Then, she pulled away and looked into his eyes, her own dark ones worried. But it was time, before she lost her nerve.

"Marcus, I need to tell you something."

Marcus blinked. Of course, their inevitable, eventual separation. How could he have forgotten? It was only one of the most miserable things he could think on. Well, that and the fact that they had been together now for over four months. It didn't really feel as though their relationship was about to end. Of course, it could, couldn't it? At any time. And sooner if they worked at it. Which was what they intended to do, wasn't it? Of course it was...

Marcus's train of thought was effectively derailed by Tonks full embrace and loving kiss. Marcus focused on the passion and pleasure of the woman in his arms, only stopping when Tonks was finished. When she was, he found himself very concerned by the look in her eyes.

"Oh? Well, then I need to hear it."

Tonks looked at him for a long time. Given the fact that it had taken her a day to actually get the nerve together to do this, she should be more prepared. She should have a plan. But she didn't. Should she just blurt it out? Or try to break the news more tactfully? No, that really wasn't her style. So she just watched him intently, and then reached for and caught his hand around the wrist.

"Marcus, I'm..." She pressed his hand against her abdomen, right over where the baby slept and dreamed as it formed. Her eyes were worried as she looked at him. "I'm going to have a baby." There. It was out. He knew. So now he just had to react, and she waited breathlessly to see what he'd say.

Marcus blinked for a long second, then remembered to close his mouth. Had Tonks just said what he thought she had said? Of course she had. She was going to have a baby. She was going to have his baby. He had always known it was possible, of course; well, part of him had, anyway. If he were being honest, however, he would have to admit that it hadn't crossed his mind lately, what with moving to this new city and the challenge of the Labyrinth.

He was going to be a father. He was going to share this joy with the woman he loved more than anything.

Marcus' face split into an enormous grin, and whatever nervousness he felt exploded in a loud laugh. "Tonks, that's wonderful! We're going to be parents! Can you believe it?" His kept his hand on her belly, trying to feel the new life forming inside.

She'd been worried that he would be upset, perhaps even blame her, but he didn't seem inclined to do that. There was a moment when she hadn't been entirely sure just what he would do, since he seemed to be somewhat in a state of shock. Then, he'd grinned widely, and she felt her own face take on a similar expression.

She let her hand rest on top of his, beyond pleased with his reaction. She'd been so worried, because even though she'd come to realize that she wanted this baby, she couldn't be sure he would. He'd taken that worry right off her shoulders, and she felt about a thousand tonnes lighter.

"I know!" She grinned at him, then glanced down at her stomach thoughtfully. "Do you think I look any bigger? I was looking in the mirror and I couldn't tell..." She smiled and changed her glance so that her eyes met his. "I was worried you would be angry..."

Tonks smile in response to his own grin made Marcus smile even more widely. It felt like the best thing that had happened to him in a very long time. With no thoughts of how they would raise a child in this place, or even whether they would be able to raise one together, Marcus revelled in Tonks' elation, feeling her belly and smiling into her shining eyes.

"No, I can't see it, even now. And if I had noticed it before, I might have guessed. Angry? Well, I guess we never talked about it, but I do know how these things work. I always knew there was a chance." He kissed her forehead. "And I can't think of anything more wonderful."

It was true. His mind was already whizzing along, imagining what raising a child would be like, what kind of a father he would be. He already had no doubt Tonks was going to be a fabulous mother.

Tonks smiled, unsure how this could be any more amazing. She'd been so worried, and yet, Marcus was actually happy about this! She was pretty sure she knew him well enough to know if he was putting on an act about the whole thing, but he didn't seem to be. It was an incredible relief to the witch that he was, because it meant that she could be happy about it, too.

"You know, it didn't occur to me?" She flushed slightly. "I mean, I do know how the whole thing works, of course, but I just never thought... But I'm not upset about it, I think it's bloody brilliant."

She hugged him close, smiling up at him. "Do you hope it's a boy or a girl? If it's a girl, I'm not bloody naming her anything like Nymphadora, I can tell you that much."

Marcus grinned. "I'm glad one of us was thinking ahead!" He was kidding, of course. He hadn't actually made any plans for the possible arrival of a child. Even now, he was starting to wonder what kind of preparations he needed to make. Did Tonks need a different kind of bed? Would the goblins be able to make the kind of food she needed? Was their a doctor in the city that could be her obstetrician?

"Well, there it is, then. We both think it's good. That's fortunate." He kissed her forehead again. "I don't hope for one over the other. Either one would be just as good. And you can call her or him any name you choose. It's a mother's prorogative."

It hadn't honestly occurred to Marcus to think about whether it was going to be a boy or a girl. Children were rather asexual anyway, weren't they? He didn't see what difference the baby's sex was going to make.

Tonks smiled and nodded. "That's mostly how it's done in my world, too, but I still don't know much about yours." She wrapped her arms around him, happy with his reaction to her revelation. Sighing in contentment, she cuddled close and rested her head against his shoulder.

"We're going to be parents." There was a lot to worry about. For example, the fact that they were on a strange world, and bound to get home to their own worlds. For example, the uncertainty of their whole situation. But those things could go hang, at least for now. She simply wanted to bask, and so, holding tightly to him, she did just that.
