Spring blossoms
Who: Ginou, anyone else
Where: Jardin du Luxembourg
When: April 10, 1941 - morning
What: Foraging for useful plants

Ginou pulled her coat tight about her and felt Jeanette's fingers for signs of cold. It might be a glorious spring morning in Paris, but the wind cut like a knife. The baby lay in a makeshift hammock of her very own, made from an old curtain and draped around Ginou's shoulders, while Ginou herself was lucky enough to be wearing the greatcoat of her landlady's late husband. This was her first foraging expedition since Jeanette's birth, although she had run errands for Mme Dupont. She could not exist on the kindness of a widow any longer however, and since her old employer would not allow maids to bring babies to work..

Herbs, buds, blossoms, leaves: most were useful as well as pretty. Roots too, had their uses in cooking as well as medicine, and in times of rationing it was a logical source of income or means to barter. It was clear that numerous Parisians had had the same idea, however, and their trampling over perfectly good plants would make her job that much harder.

It was good to be out and about though, with her sleeping bundle of love nestled against her chest. Fresh air and sunshine did wonders for the soul, particularly when wartime was hidden by the trees.

Jackie was dressed in the worst of her clothes, as she also looked around for edible plants. She had some dandelion in her bag, and now she looked for something else.

Rations were never enough, and she didn't want to depend on her fans to feed her. They usually provided a few extra things, but she learned a long time ago to never depend on others.

She kept her head down, and didn't speak much. Colored folk were a rare sight these days.

OOC: Apologies for the delay!

At first Ginou made as if to hide when she saw movement on the other side of a large bush.. she had no idea what it was. Not native to France, that was certain. But regards her fellow forager, she was curious, and realising that no German would be rooting around in the dirt she decided to call out a cheery bonjour. City dwellers were often stand-offish and rude, but perhaps they could pool their finds as the villagers would back home.

"Hello the tree!" she.. well, it was still little more than a whisper. "I have some wild garlic, if you would like to trade?"

"Hello." said Jackie "I have some dandelion... I hope that I'm not in your way."

She had a feeling that the lady was friendly, however. "And these greens can be good for cooking..." she added If you like that sort of thing."

The other woman's accent was no stranger than her own, compared to that of most Parisians, but it felt like an age before Ginou gathered her wits and closed her jaw. And she thought city dwellers rude?

"I am so very sorry," she babbled. "I.. I have never met a lady like you before."

Ginou felt her face flush bright enough to burn. If the ground opened up beneath her, she wouldn't complain!

"Well, It's nice to meet you to, ma'am." Jackie smiled, she was very used to that reaction "I don't see many people looking for food out here... What was that you said you had again? Wild garlic?"

"Y..yes." Pull yourself together! "The bulb isn't exactly mature at this time of year, but flavouring is flavouring."

Ginou took one from her pocket, then another. She was still ashamed of herself for staring.

"Here. If you take have a pot of soil, you could plant the second. That's what I'm planning to do anyway." Her tone became slightly derogatory. "This park seems to have more pretty flowers than anything useful."

"Thank you." Jackie smiled "You're very generous. My name is Jackie Pearson, and yes, most of the plants are just pretty flowers."

"Genevieve Minjoulet, but everyone calls me Ginou," she introduced herself shyly. "And I'm only doing what is normal in my part of France."

Then opened her coat enough for the sling to become visible. "And this is Jeanette."

Jackie stepped closer to look, she loved children. She'd asked her last few beaus about children- but they usually laughed it off. She was, after all, a colored singer. Who'd ever want children with her?

"How old is she?"

"3 weeks." Ginou couldn't keep the [tired] smile off her face, though she was still struggling with this new reality of motherhood. "Three weeks of trying to learn what to do and praying that I'm getting it right."

So far her only source of advice - in lieu of female relatives - was Mme Dupont, whose mothering days were two decades past.

She looked up at Jackie. "Do you have children?"

"No, not me... Perhaps someday." Jackie smiled a little "Well, from what I remember my Mama saying, you can't do much wrong with little ones. Just feed them, keep them warm, and love them.. the rest is just supposed to come natural, I guess. Now, I don't know if it's true, but it sounds like good advice."

Jackie looked at the sling. "What did you name.. is it a girl?"

"Yes, she is." And as fair haired as her father. "At home my mother, Mamie and aunts might have lent a hand, but here.. I hope that understanding her needs will come naturally. Until then, she gives me a reason to deal with all of this."

Ginou's gesture encompassed the Jardin as a whole.

"May I ask, where is your home?" she blushed furiously. "You do not seem, uh, local."

"I'm American." said Jackie "Things were a lot better here than at home, so I just made my home here. Where's your home, if I may ask? I know you must miss your family."

"American?"

Ginou was in awe - a coloured lady not from across the Mediterranean but the ocean.. She'd seen pictures of New York once, at school. The Statue of Liberty's older twin lived in this very park, if she remembered rightly.

"You're a long way from home, mademoiselle, but your French is very good. I am only from the south-west of France, the area called Landes. We don't even speak French as they do here, except in school."

"I've been here several years." said Jackie "How long have you been here? I'm sorry to have so many questions, but most people stare, and don't talk much... or they're soldiers."

She said that last part quietly- but she was glad for the company.

And some of the soldiers talk too much, Ginou thought of the young man a few days before, the one looking for the Tour Eiffel.

"I arrived just before winter," she said aloud. It had seemed best to leave sooner rather than later, given the hostility shown by her family and the cold weather closing in. "Haven't even done much sightseeing yet though, unless there's a park or garden along the way!"

She bit her lip, then asked anyway. "Why do you stay here? Surely it would safer in your home country, where there are no invaders?"

"It was safer here for me." said Jackie, quietly "And this city's become my home... "

Jackie looked down, thinking of what Georgia had been like. "My life is here, now." she added

What an unexpected answer! But it would be very, very rude to ask for more information. It wasn't as if Ginou was comfortable with sharing all the details of her own journey, so how could she pry into someone else's?

She decided to aim for a lighter mood, instead.

"Well, as the expert between us, is there anything of Paris you can recommend that a country girl should not miss?"

"Well, I don't think you should miss any of it. I'll make a nice list for you, and you can see everything. She can too." Jackie smiled "How bout I give you my address, and we visit sometime. I can watch the little one for you if you ever need a break."

Ginou smiled with undisguised happiness. While many had "pulled together" and showed kindness, few did so outside their own circle of friends. She blamed the Germans.

"That would be wonderful! Though I suspect that your neighbours would think me your cleaning lady," she giggled. "Unless you happen to need one?"

"I'm not sure what the neighbors would think." Jackie smiled "But I never made a mess that I don't clean up myself. If yiu're in search of a job though, I might be able to talk to a friend, and find one for you."

Jackie didn't really have a lot of friends. She treasured the few that she had, and loved making new ones.
