It was easy to talk a big game on the network, of course, especially if he pushed aside the meaning of what they were actually talking about. There was a novelty to it too, an ease in expressing himself that Sam hadn’t felt in years. Ease being a relative term, of course. There was a lot he didn’t know how to say; he wasn’t the same person who could joke and charm in the tensest of situations. But his fingers didn’t freeze up the same way his voice did when the enormity of things stuck in his throat. It divorced the need to be physically present to communicate and he could hardly deny how that appealed to him - being able to connect to other people without leaving somewhere safe. Without making himself vulnerable. He remembered that that hadn’t been a consideration, once. He’d liked being around people more, enjoyed joking and charming them. His skin hadn’t crawled with the weight of attention. It felt like a very long time ago. He was a little glad now that the other Steve had disappeared so quickly, before they'd had a chance to meet in person; the prospect was nerve-wracking, a throwback to when he'd still been hovering on the periphery of Steve's life, ducking into his apartment when he wasn't there to trade supplies and information but hesitant to face him for real even after the tenor of the notes he left changed to make it clear that he was forgiven the crime of not being Bucky. And this Steve had... expectations. Maybe. A history with him that was even more different, difficult to figure out without more information. |
