[He looks around, moving slowly, the initial discomfort only intensifying the deeper the move into the house-- the line of his shoulders is tense, his breaths quiet, as if he was, perhaps unknowingly, trying to make himself disappear against the darkness of the walls. There is no danger, and yet...]

[But as he looks, there is one door that seems to call to him, a closed door at the end of a hallway; without registering it, he lets go of his twin's hand, his steps certain, unfaltering in their course as he walks to the door, his hand hovering above the handle, like he can't quite bring himself to enter the room, even when he doesn't know why.]

Subaru.

[He calls out softly when he notices him move away, when it registers where he's heading to and though he doesn't stop him, he hopes his voice can ground his twin in some way, that he might hear him. Keep him from getting lost in the overwhelming sensation that being in this place without recollection must bring...]

[And quietly, Kamui follows Subaru down that hallway, soon standing behind where he stops, and gently touching his hand over his on the handle, not turning it. Rather, he checks:] Are you all right?

[At first, there is no indication of him hearing his twin, nothing to suggest he isn't already lost in the memories-that-are-not, in something that is almost dizzying in its absence, but that soft touch startles a quick exhale out of him, as he turns his head slightly, a faraway look still in his eyes, even as they fix on Kamui]

It is... it's like something is calling me. But, at the same time... I don't want to follow it. I don't understand. Why am I feeling such... [His voice trails off, the final word dying on his lips, like saying it would make it somehow more real, tangible in a way he can't let it, but it is there, the unmistakable sense of dread, his breathing quicker now as he he tries to answer and resist the call of that room at the same time.]

[He shakes his head at those words even before realising what he is doing, his expression fixed somewhere between indecision and determination, as though half of him wants nothing more than to acquiesce to Kamui's suggestion, while the other half knows he can't do that, can't not go beyond that door.]

[He moves his hand, his fingertips touching his twin's chin lightly, pushing it up so their eyes can meet, and his decision shines clear in his eyes, even before he speaks.]

I don't want to. But, Kamui... I must.

	[Meets his gaze like that, and for a moment just looks at him, at the conviction on his twin's face even though this is clearly something he doesn't want to do and yet.] Subaru... [Smiles at him, a brief, barely-there smile before he nods, exhaling in something like relief.] Thank you.

[Without much ceremony, he reaches for the door handle once more, twisting it and pushing the door open... barely registering the blood-stained walls, the scratches that cover every surface, some made by nails like theirs, some by sword strikes, as he doubles over, collapsing on the floor as the memories return to him.]

[He doesn't say anything, can't say anything, his eyes wide, almost too much so, staring at something only he can see-- taking in all those memories, all of their family dying, one by one, their aunt as the last in this very room, the realisation that it was all because he hadn't listened to Kamui, hadn't been as cautious as he should have been, and now they're all...]

... It was all my fault. They're all dead, all of them, and it's all because of me. [The words are quiet, almost toneless, as though he can't quite process this through the shock, the overwhelming guilt that is so heavy, so much a part of him that he can't believe he could have forgotten.]

[He reaches out, touching the bloodstains that cover the floor almost gently, before he lifts his head, his eyes finding his twin's, and this time, when he speaks, his voice is louder, the question absolutely sincere.]

How could you have ever forgiven me? [He can't have ever forgiven himself. Even if he doesn't remember what happened afterwards... this much he knows.]

[When Subaru turns his eyes to Kamui, with that guilt in his tone, however more direct his words are, Kamui just shakes his head then meets that gaze. He's firm now, understanding Subaru's reaction but not about to let him misunderstand.] Forgiven you? You know it could have never been a matter of that to me, Subaru.

I realize how seeing all this must make you feel. I...

[He can't put into words how sorry he is for it. Breathes out.] I understand why. [He touches his forehead to Subaru's, eyes closing now. He knows exactly why all of this happened.]

But even knowing, how could I forsake you when you matter so much to me -- even more so now that everyone is gone?
